She's the ultimate domestic goddess! She really elevated homemaking to an art in the 80s. Wish she had been around when I was in junior high when girls had to take a mandatory Home Economics class back in the day. I might have enjoyed it more. As for farm life, that was my childhood and it was a lot of work but fun!

I love that she doesn’t pretend to be “oh, just like you!”. Also, in my opinion, THAT is living well. Good, rich, organic foods, animals, sunlight, air, good company when you want it. Notice she didn’t talk about her gym classes or makeup routine or choosing clothes or crazy supplements. I’m healthily jealous!

I give my dogs everything I eat in small doses and my pomeranian is 16 yrs old and healthy as can be. People are a trip lol. For everyone worried on how to start, if you have Netflix, I highly recommend monty don's series on gardening, he has a lot of useful tips on how to do basic (&more complicated) things, and seeing what other people without many experience can do is encouraging. Edit: and, if like me, you don't even have a balcony where stuff would fit (one of those thats just a fence), try extra strenght stick on shower racks.

I used to love the parodies that SNL did of Martha when she was in jail. She's rich, but she is also a disciplined hard worker. She could buy all that organic food at a Whole Foods and forget about having a vegetable garden and raising poultry, but she enjoys being involved in understanding where her food is coming from. Your "annoyance" at the simple truths and, frankly, her subtle ADMONITION for us to aim higher (she actually worked for all her shit!) betrays more about your bitterness and insecurity about your lot in life than it does about nothing wrong about what she shared and it is not her fault, nor is it her or anybody else's responsibility to hide her life and lifestyle in order to protect your fragile feelings. I actually haven't even seen a truffle in person in my life and scared to even google how much black ones cost lol. I just tried to absorb the tips she was sharing that I'll be able to apply in my own cooking, which if you have followed her or watched her shows occasionally as I have over the decades, you'd know she likes to share little-known tips on food and drink and to focus on what she's actually conveying (read: it was the unique technique and the butter, NOT the truffles that you can substitute with other flavors) instead of letting envy take over your whole being. And BTW, the reason I don't have that kind of toxic envy is that I don't want my life to get to that level of complexity and scrutiny and also do not crave living in huge mansions and land with servants. If you want it THAT bad for yourselves, stop whining and start working towards it.

Martha's Everyday Food cookbooks contain down to earth recipes with common ingredients at affordable prices. Very little is not made from scratch and the food is both tasty and interesting. I bought my copies used and they're among my favorites to simply browse through. Lots of appetizing photos.
