As a Tesla owner for almost 6 years now I give you a run-down on all the things that went wrong on my second Tesla, a 2018 Tesla Model S P100D with ludicrous mode.
For information on what failed on my older 2015 Tesla, see this video: • 5 Years of Endless Tes...
Overall the car is a lot of fun to drive but the years of needing repairs due to poor quality has led me to shop for something else. I replaced my first Tesla with a gas Lexus due to bad quality. What should I replace this Tesla with? Audi Etron GT? Porsche Taycan? Wait and see...
Here are just a few of the things that have needed attention:
- carbon fiber spoiler replaced (not staying attached)
- key fob failed completely
- UMC mobile charging cable failed completely
- front end rattle over bumps
- front air shocks replaced
- headlight daytime running light DRL dim
- replaced passenger side headlight
- charge port door malfunction not opening correctly
- charge port door replaced
- steering wheel button broke in
- inner door handle trim fell out
- wiper nozzle jet aimed too low repeatedly
- front stabilizer bar links replaced
- CV joint rattle noise under hard acceleration

Dude I’ve been watching your videos for YEARS! I got rid of my Model S after multiple different problems (long ass list to type) back in December of 2018. Best decision ever. It’s a car to have if you have lots of money to blow. But if you’re budgeting and financing, this is something you want to avoid. Since June 2019 I’ve had my 19 RAV4 LE FWD and its been the BEST car I’ve ever owned! With 21,000 miles, if it blew up / broke tomorrow I would still brag about it. I love it 1000000x more than the pos Model S. You have every right to be upset about your service visits. Even if they are smaller, for a car of this caliber and price it is UNACCEPTABLE to have this many service visits, and early on. It’s one thing if there was a small manufacture defect and they caught it right away, it’s another thing to have this many service visits to repair things that could leave you stranded easily. One of my last straws was the firmware update where all of the apps were at the top of the screen. I felt it on safe and unresponsive and glitchy. The other last straw was a big problem my head that wasn’t my fault. I wish people knew about these vehicles and their problems. They don’t want to see it or face it because Tesla is Tesla and the enthusiasts are crazy lol. There’s been a lot of people I have talked out of buying one, or have agreed that once they get rid of theirs they won’t buy another one. So I guess it’s like anything else. I watched just about every video you upload, just don’t always have time to comment or go back and remember lol. I don’t have time to upload videos myself anymore but I do post a picture or a video and a summary on my Instagram.

Thanks, Mike. Yeah I went back to Lexus & Toyota if you've seen my other videos. Literally replaced this high end premium car with a RAV4 Prime, no regrets! Quality, dependability, no hype, etc. I think some of the reason the Tesla fanboys are so closed minded is that they invest in the stock. They may have made money so they have a subconscious reason to say good things and have a positive outlook even faced with the reality of poor build quality and terrible customer service. The fanbase has it's share of nut bars. I know of multiple Tesla owners who would not buy another one. Those are not the diehard fanboys though LOL.

15k miles on my Model 3 and the only time I went into the service center was to get the HW3 upgrade. Had a nail in the tire , went to an independent repair shop , used summon on the lift to turn the tire and find the leak. No need to put it neutral and no one else got in my car risking oil stains. Summoned it out of the garage as well. I had a mobile service visit for a front passenger safety restraint system fault that was fixed in the driveway. He also replaced the charge port pins that I didn’t ask for but apparently people’s rubber caps would get stuck in the supercharger plug so that fix prevented that. Now I’m just waiting for fsd beta, and Amazon prime to be added to the theater. Sucks you had all those issues but I would still go for plaid just for the 500+ mile range and the new 4680 battery tech and mcu3 infotainment. That’s why I have a cybertruck plaid reservation beside the durability aspect and I believe it’ll have mcu3 as well.

You've heard my opinion about the quality of the vehicles many times over the years and while we've been luckier than you... certainly had far more issues than a premium vehicle should and service is an absolute joke, especially for the price point. I expect better quality and service from a "premium" brand, and especially at this price. I maybe got a wee bit impulsive in 2018 in going back for more LOL. People keep saying they get better over time.... hmmm.... you probably read about how prevalent the lack of cabin heat in extreme cold is on the brand new Teslas but it looks like they are still working out the bugs today (no surprise). I literally "gave up" a few months ago and didn't bother getting service for the CV clicking noise, it's someone else's problem now. Does your car make the CV rattle type noise only under hard acceleration too or all the time? First of all, I cannot believe you bought another S after all the problems you encountered with your first one. The problems you've had and have tried to resolve would have made me swear off Tesla's for life. In my case, I bought a MY on May 1 (my first electric car). My nearest service center is about 10 miles away (I live in south Florida). I had one mobile visit to correct a few minor issues on the car. I drive very little, and after almost a month of ownership, I've got around 150 miles on mine. No rattles or funny noises. Happy with it so far. I think you made a wise choice with a Japanese car. I've owned many Hyundai's and a Kia Stinger - never a problem with either. Sad to say, Japan and South Korea make much more reliable cars than the U.S. It's been that way for decades. If you want to go back to electric, both Kia and Hyundai both have new electric models coming soon, and they look pretty cool. FYI - Kia and Hyundai are both part of the same company.

Even the Model Y introduced in March 2020 was troublesome, but the new ones ( Jan 2021 and newer) are near perfect.

It sounds like you have had some issues. Most seemed minor. I bought a new 2013, MS, 85 k which has been my daily driver since 2013. I have 180,000 miles on it. To be honest it has been very reliable and a great car. I’ve had some maintenance of course, but most has been preformed by a mobile tech which has been seamless. The guy shows up where you are and makes the repair. It’s effortless from my perspective. It sounds like your problems were covered by warranty as well? All vehicles require maintenance. Even a Lexus. I found you because I was having a charging issue a few months back where the amps kept stopping at 1 and the car charging would shut off. You had a similar problem and thought it was due to a cold battery. After months of troubleshooting Tesla kept telling me it was the source. I had my utility company out several times to rule it out. We replaced the charging port and an adapter to the mobile charger. After that didn’t work and Tesla again said it was the source, I noticed the volts were jumping up to 252 and I called my utility company again. Turns out it was the power source. The utility company had an open neutral from the pole to the house. I think perhaps owing my a Tesla saved my house from burning down due to the utility companies error. Also you indicate your Tesla cost 200 k? I think the new one is about 79 k now. I paid about that as well.

I've been reading about their current build quality, and in the Netherlands this has, coupled with what is best termed as a total absence of after sales support, resulted in a law change and the setup of a foundation explicitly set up to take Tesla to court. The simpler design and new designs seem to make it much more reliable than the Model S and the Fabergé Egg Model X!

A few reasons for upgrading in 2018 was newer tech for the Autopilot and full self driving (which turned out to be a scam), the end of free supercharging for as long as you own the car, and of course I thought quality had improved which wasn't much. Later I found out that Tesla downgraded my old Tesla via a software update (search #chargegate). I don't trust the company after that sleazy move (this happened in 2019).

I bought a used Model S at 119,000 miles, 6 days ago and I dropped it off yesterday at 3rd party dealer because it needs service. This car I have was original retail $100,000.00. It’s worth $33k. I do have the exact same problem you have with the rattling noise. Thanks for naming your issues, I will mention this to the dealer: Suspension end links, Air Strut mounds, Brake pad calibers or complete air suspension. I also had a RWD unit failure yesterday on my way to the service center. While I agree these are serious issues, I will say every car I’ve owned except for my latest Chrysler 300 Sport failed. Whether Ford Taurus, Chrysler Sebring, Nissan Altima. I’ve had major problems with all automakers. The real question is, can you get service? If the answer is yes, I have no problem fixing issues. Overall, right now I wouldn’t buy any other car other than a Chrysler 300 Sport or a Tesla Model S. I will not even consider a 3 or X or Y. I do not like any of Tesla’s latest models. (By the way someone already bought my Chrysler 300 Sport, in less than 5 days. I saw them making the purchase. They fell in love with my car. I took really good care of the paint with waxes and polishes)

Buy a few year old used Lexus you'll save at least $10k or more and since it's a Toyota you will probably have 1 or two issues in 10 years, Lexus aka Toyota is the most reliable luxury brand there is. Tesla in the other hand is probably the least reliable "luxury" brand of all. I've had a Honda for 15+ years, 3 issues, sun visors were bad, takata airbags, both under warranty. The last issue was starter that needed changing after 15 years. 3 issues in 15 years 😂

Your experience is unfortunate because the Model S is a beautiful design, but for you to have a 2015 Model S and 2018 Model S . I was hoping you would have had a better experience. Being the exterior hasn't changed since 2012 you would expect that each year the bugs would be worked out each year. When you have a model flagship as the Model S that is basically unchanged over 9 years (unlike most Cars) this design is ten years old now and some of the original issues of failure haven't been cured. I can see why you are fed up and moving away from the Model S. I'd suggest to just move to Model 3 since its most reliable just for all the pros that Tesla has over the EV competition. Your research and sharing of the 2 Model S you owned tells me to move to Model 3 from My 2015 Model S 85D when its time. Even though mine was preowned with 19,966 when purchased Feb-2021 and I have only had the 12v battery replaced and Opted to upgrade from MCU1 to MCU2 rather than have the MCU1 memory upgrade. (It was well worth the $1620.00 out the door). This month the Driver rear door handle will not present. that will cost $306.00 to repair.
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah the 3 seems to be the most reliable but I'm done with the company for now. I may go back in the future but there is too much hype & BS to be honest. To top off needing too many repairs they lied about a number of things in the past and now it's obvious Full Self Driving that I paid $10,000 for will be a complete joke, and will probably never be delivered as they hyped up. I think you will see the FSD thing turn away a lot of enthusiasts of the company. Other brands literally have better driver assistance systems as of today. As for your car, good luck I suspect you will continue to have lots of smaller repairs as time goes on. Tesla the company is not focused on quality right now and it shows. The only reason the 3 is more reliable is because it's a simpler car.

Why did you buy a second Tesla after having so many problems with your first Tesla?
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 3 жыл бұрын
Fair question! Well when I ordered the P100D I figured it's been 3 more years and I would have a lot less problems. I didn't realize that Tesla was lying to me about putting in superchargers where I live (was supposed to be done by 2017 and didn't get done until Xmas 2019). I didn't know Tesla was going to downgrade my supercharging speeds on my older Tesla due to battery fire concerns (Google Tesla batterygate for 85 kWh packs). I didn't know they were outright lying about Full Self Driving capabilities after promoting a video of a car driving itself near the Tesla headquarters back in 2016-2017 timeframe. The list goes on but time has shown that lying about timeframes and future products is normal for Tesla and they rely on this and hype for sales. The cars are fun but I think the company is despicable now.
