Organic chemist here, when needing to keep reactions at 20ishC in a heat generating reaction we would use a dry ice and pure methanol bath. The bath would get down to -78C and be able to cool a constant reaction that if left alone would spike over 100C. Now the reaction was being performed in dichloromethane (DCM), so i don’t know what the thermal coefficient is between them but it was the standard for us. The methanol also maintains a low viscosity due to it’s freezing point around -98C. If pure metal is hard to get ahold of pure ethanol or pure acetone would work as well. No idea what it would do to the loop and pump fyi.

Honestly, one of the biggest reasons I like JayzTwoCents is some of the "crazy" things you try. Especially if it doesn't work or something goes wrong. A little bit of tech, a little bit of laughs, a little bit of "don't try this at home". Air compressor in a water loop? Yeah! Sub-zero loop? Yeah!

I love the use of the $5 Lowes bucket! That constant bubbling sound in the background gives you a real mad scientist feel. To quote Jamie from the MythBusters, failure is always an option.

My background: Marine engineer, which is a fancy way of saying "ship engine room janitor"... And self taught pc nerd. My tips: 1. Stick to a mix with mostly water, as the heat capacity of this substance is amazing. No coincidence that we use H2O for so much. Ratio of 90/10 water/antifreeze might be a place to start, and dilute if there's flow issues. Maybe add salt to further decrease freezing point. (Beware of corrosion.) 2. Cooling? Approx a bathtub of water ice mix. As ice melts it draws out huge amounts of energy. 3. Increase flow over the CPU/GPU, maybe having two pumps in serial, one before and one after the bathtub coil.

The mishaps and goof ups are what make these videos so damn good! It's not just when everything goes well. Science and experiments can and will go wrong, shit happens, but you guys made it incredibly entertaining and WELL worth the time, finances, and effort that was put in. What you want is a heat transfer fluid with a viscosity of 0 to 10 cPs at -20C .... There are a multitude of companies that can provide you with this type of fluid. Dynalene is one that comes to mind. These viscosity curves will be in the technical data sheets of the products....oh right my credentials😅... PhD in polymer science, and 15 years experience in materials science, lubricant and polymer additives ... Cheers

try to get -45 Degree Windshield washer fluid. I've used that here in Canada and held -30c using an MCP655 pump. Just be sure to fill the electronics side of the pump with non-conductive thermal compound....

Windshield washer fluid or winterizer. Good to -40 or lower. AND ITS CHEAP!!!

Dowtherm is a heating/cooling fluid that is used in industrial HVAC applications, it has a low viscosity similar to kerosene @ -100F, it is also used in food grade environments due to it's comparatively lower toxicity.

Use Denatured Alcohol. Back in the late 90's early 2000 we home built water blocks and used freeze trays from a mini fridge to super cool alcohol which was pumped using a koi pond pump bought at lowes. It would be freezing the condensation in the air underneath the cpu and we had to cut neoprene mouse pads and use them as space fillers to take up that space to eliminate freezing. We were running 400 celerons or Pentium III's at stupid speeds. Ever heard of the Computerator (computer-refrigerator), that build is where that came from.

I love these types of videos where this kind of at home science is done. Side note, from my research in the past about fluids and materials that work at various temperatures to move heat, the heat capacity of things is another consideration alongside how quickly it can pick up and dissapate the heat. My search quickly lead me into a realm of materials science I was not prepared for.

"Methanol-Water" is what I keep seeing all over the internet articles. "Data on Coolants and Liquids Used in Computer Watercooling" from Overclockers has a lot of useful stuff.

Bio ethanol would be a good bet. Because of its low freezing point of −114 °C (−173 °F) and low toxicity, ethanol is sometimes used in laboratories (with dry ice or other coolants) as a cooling bath to keep vessels at temperatures below the freezing point of water.

I found this to be EXTREMELEY entertaining.

Advice for running 2 pumps in series: don't pump into a reservoir. Mount 2nd pump with a direct mount. And additionally if you really have to have 2 reserviors, don't leave the 2nd one open, because all the fluid will spit out of it instead of going further into the loop. Also if you need that 2nd reservior, fill it without leaving any air inside, so air doesn't create cushioning effect, stealing from your pressure.

Jay, there's a reason why your car (which can/does operate in freezing temps) uses a 50/50 mix of EthylGlycol/Water. Either material by itself will freeze at near the same temps (0 C for water, -13 C for EG). However, when mixed with a 60%EG/40%H2O, it drops down to the -45 C range. I'm not a science guy, but this is what I learned in Chemistry in high school. And of course, some simple google searching would have shown you what you needed. As someone mentioned below, you could also use some alcohols, of course the reason they don't use that is autos is simple corrosion and flammability. I'm curious to see how a methanol based loop would perform. You could even do 50/50 methanol and water or glycol if you're worried about flammability. Also use ethylene glycol or triethylene glycol.

OK, I don't have a science license, but here's some free advice: 1. Get a bloody flow monitor. That would tell you if you have enough flow. Aquacomputer, for example. 2. Get a proper chiller. One of those Hailea aquarium chillers would do very nicely. They also have a pump which would help with flow. 3. Ditch the glycol-based coolant. Use ethyl alcohol. Start with 90% concentration, which would have a melting point of cca -100 degrees Celsius, well below dry ice. If I'm not mistaken, you can dilute it with water to 55% and it would still not freeze at -40 degrees Celsius. 4. Get proper pumps. I suggest Eheim 1262 (yes, I used it, yes it's awesome). 5. Feel free to disregard all my advice, if you wish. It's fine. I don't mind at all. Good luck!

I have a feeling that because the water is subzero and the fins have not been perfectly smoothed over, the water is still crashing into the uneven surface and freezing. It is like the water bottles that are sub-zero temperatures and then a knock causes it to freeze. A solution to this could be adding a bunch of salt to the water to depress the freezing point, but do keep in mind that this probably causes whole other issues for electronics and microorganisms.

Salt water also has a lower freezing temp than water alone. I wonder if that would help at all. Also, on your loop. Put a ball valve or whatever type of valve you want, and have it under the level of the water in the bucket. With having that good of a pump, you can bleed off some of the head pressure and use it to circulate the glycol/water etc. It will also help bleed and empty the loop. Also, as I edit this for the third time, look in to data center water cooling. I know they use specialized equipment and coolers. Yes, I know they are probably expensive, but I am sure there are used ones out there by now.

Have you guys ever seen Taskmaster? 2 people competing in a challenge to build a pc, or setup a watercooling system, but with lots of traps / pitfalls in the task/equipment/rules would be a lot of fun!

Use 3M Novec HFE-7500. It'll stay thin enough to pump all the way down to -40C.

Why not just make a basic AC unit with an old frig pump and butane as the refrigerant? The block would be the cold side of the loop. Butane doesn't need such high pressures as propane or r32 to work effectively.

In Linus’s chilled threadripper video, he said that antifreeze gets viscous and used windshield deicer instead because it stays liquid all the way down to almost -50C. The 14900k is very hard to cool because of the small die. There just isn’t enough surface area to move heat effectively. Threadripper does much better because the heat is spread out across the whole die.

Jeez, why would you go through all this trouble? Just use a LN2 pot and fill it with isopropyl alcohol or acetone as the medium + dry ice.

Glycol will gel up as it gets super cold. You really should try dry ice + isopropyl alcohol. Should stay liquid at dry ice temps.

You might want to run 99% Isopropyl Alcohol. From what I remember you should be good up to -45 C. (Important) make sure there is no water in the loop)

Chemical engineer here. Temperature control systems in industry often use silicone based heat transfer fluids, such as Syltherm XLT. These are meant for cryogenic applications with good results ( freezing point is around-100degc). Beware though, it is flammable with a flash point of approx 50degC and auto ignition temp of ca. 350degc so it is also used in ATEX environments. Given how this video went, I'd think 2995721 times before using this solution 😅. Loved it, though. Jank setups and fiddling around are what keeps me going when dealing with so many regulations every day!

Also, I would recommend this video to everyone that want to do a little overclocking with dry ice. P.S.: If you want coolant for sub-zero cooling, you should try vodka. It sounds crazy, but it works.

I would say water with ~23% ammonia give about a -57F freezing point with a fairly high thermal capacity(close to pure water). But ammonia and copper dont play well with each other as well as being toxic. Just ethanol and dry ice has about half the thermal capacity of water plus its fairly cheap at Home Depot or Lowes and can go down to -173F.

Use ethanol dedicated for use in a loop of you can, if not, you can get methanol. The properties are slightly different for a loop system compared to automotive so you may have to talk to your hvac guy and see if he can get you a 5 gallon pail or less if they have some leftover from a geothermal application

To be honest dude I dont think anyone even cares if the experiments work or not, its just fun watching regardless! With that said I hope we get a follow-up to this one.

For a loop-to-loop setup, glycol is fine if you're transporting beer from across a building. When you want to introduce dry-ice, then the secondary loop needs a more temperature friend option, such as methanol, ethanol, or the more commonly used acetone. Only problem is the material and safety requirements change, ex. no plastic parts, plenty of ventilation, and no ignition sources.
