Everything Wrong With CinemaSins: How To Train Your Dragon 2

So you know how kids were scarred by The Lion King because they killed Mufasa? Well, as someone who didn't grow up with that movie, I had that experience with this movie. Stoick dying the way he did blew me away as a kid, and to this day, I will always feel sad about it. And CinemaSins should've removed a sin for it.
Disclaimer: I don't have much ill will towards CinemaSins, I just want to point out the many mistakes they've made in their videos.

Another great video. I especially anticipated Sin 54 because I (and to an extension, the fans) knew Drago *wanted* Hiccup to try getting Toothless back to being himself, and to this day, CinemaSins still doesn't understand that villains have big egos (and ironically, they do, too, yet don't seem to know it...)

"Hiccup just saw his dad die!" I *_SWEAR,_* replace Hiccup with Simba, play the scene of Simba crying over Mufasa's death - And by extension Scar telling Simba to "Run away and never return" - and the idiots blaming Simba for Pride Rock falling into drought need to shut up and never flap their beaks again!!! *_IT! WAS!! SCAR'S!!! FAULT!!!!!!!_*

Simba refusing to return to Pride Rock over Nala’s objections was Simba’s fault which was part of the lesson Simba had to learn

14:29, also, dragon eyes having hypnotic properties actually is in the books. And there it actually is based on direct eye contact. (It’s not full-blown mind control in the books though and it also affects humans there so it’s not closely based on that but even so, he’s sinning something which was in the books.)

14:05 I’m pretty sure the blindfold is so toothless doesn’t concentrate on flying and spends his time shutting out the Bewilderbeast. Hiccup says, “You have to shut him out, Toothless.” and “Do you trust me?” Implying that he wants toothless to trust him with the reigns of flying while he focuses his mind on blocking out the Alpha Command.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 is my favourite DreamWorks Animation films and one of the best films of any kind in 2014. I know there is a lot of steady competition with DWA films but this film just really did it for me when I first saw it and holds up extremely well to repeated viewings.

Hiccup mentions his mom many times in the tv series - which of course is before this movie - so him mentioning her isn't that out of place here. Besides, he didn't KNOW he was going to meet her, it was just basic conversation with his fiancé - where it made complete sense to question himself for who he is with only having been raised by one parent. Thanks for your critiques, really nice to see someone defend the franchise from these "Complete BS claims" that honestly, I find insulting and *extremely* infuriating

11:12, Not necessarily. A Fish Tale had Fly bleed and (if I recall correctly) Finding Nemo had Dory bleed. In the third How To Train Your Dragon book titled How To Speak Dragonese, humans or dragons bleeding is what it takes to attract the Sharkworms (shark-like dragons)

For Ender’s Game, DragonBall:Evolution, The Prince of Egypt and Puss in Boots 2, and The Amazing Spider-Man 10 Year Special, CinemaSins brought up the source material instead of going with the “books don’t matter” approach and (in those cases) I think that their willingness to deviate from that general approach helped them (with the exception of Puss in Boots 2 where it didn’t.) Here, if he actually engaged in the source material then he would have actual material to use.

3:33, missed sin for the fact that unlike Stormfly in the book (and Toothless in the first movie) this version of Stormfly doesn’t have much in the way of personality

5:44, because this movie is showing that Hiccup is naïve and believes Drago to be someone with whom it’s possible to negotiate despite the fact that he’s not and that (despite being wrong about dragons in the first movie) Stoick can be right about something like this and it’s showing that contrary to what someone who misunderstood the first movie might think, it’s not the case that no one is truly evil just misguided. Also, in the second book How To Be a Pirate, Hiccup tries to reason with the villainous Alvin the Treacherous even though that’s a bad idea and Hiccup’s friend Fishlegs objects to trusting someone who literally calls himself “Alvin the Treacherous”. Book Fishlegs would be great at CinemaSins.

4:38, it’s also not that unrealistic (for lack of a better word) that one dragon would be capable of tracking another dragon that the first dragon knows

6:09, better explained in the book but Hiccup’s mother wears full-body armour since she’s a warrior and constantly in situations very likely to bring about physical harm. I know Valka’s not closely based on Valhallarama from the books but that’s likely still the reason

@@captainvader921 In the book it’s really so that Hiccup’s dragons can mistake her for a villain in league with Hiccup’s enemies despite Hiccup trying to warn them not to attack her since he knows she’s his mother Valhallarama. The mask and helmet are really just in case of getting hit in the face like a normal mask and helmet. But the reason she’s drawn that way is because Cressida Cowell wanted the readers to worry (CinemaSins is just right about that part.)

@@captainvader921 All kidding aside, some of the book series might actually have been influenced by Harry Potter. In the fifth book How To Twist a Dragon’s Tale, it turns out Hiccup being born was the indirect (and unintended) result of the main villain’s evil deeds and in the eight book How To Cheat a Dragon’s Heart it turns out that Hiccup is (likely) the Chosen One destined to save the world from the main villain and in the twelfth book How To Fight a Dragon’s Fury it turns out that a good friend of his (Fishlegs) has his own backstory connecting him to those intrigues. That’s not proof positive that Cressida Cowell was influenced by Harry Potter (though Cowell has mentioned liking Harry Potter) and it easily could be a coincidence but it could also be the case that Harry Potter was an influence on the How To Train Your Dragon books (not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

1:14, Berk is a British slang term meaning idiot. Also, in the book, the island is home to the tribe of the Hairy Hooligans and is neighboured by the island of the Merciless Meatheads. My point is, the movie that was notoriously radically different from the book keeping this part of its source material should be a sin off.

Also, since CinemaSins brought up Brave for both this movie and the first one, what’s your opinion on that movie? To me, I think it’s pretty great (though far from Pixar’s best).

Don't like it. I thought the whole bear transformation plot was stupid. I was honestly tempted to bring up my feelings for that movie in the first HTTYD video, but I resisted, because it wasn't necessary
