I knew a guy who worked at his family’s restaurant all through school. He was never paid, but the deal was that when he turned 16, he would get a car. He turned 16 in 1987. Got a Grand National just like that one.

That car does NOT have the factory HD 8.5" rear axle and appears to have the standard 7.5" axle. The driveshaft being new and paint marker on the tube tells me it has been swapped. The cast iron fangs on the bottom of the housing instead of square corners are a clear indicator that it has been swapped to the inferior rear axle.

@@dizzy2020 Yes, I have a 2012 Maxima, that I love that about a year after I bought it in 2016 I hit a parked pick up truck on the side of the road. (I was being ignorant, and drove into the sun with a mostly fogged windshield blinding me.) It took out the right front suspension and the passenger side fender and front valence. I hauled to a body and fender man I trusted for a lot of restoration work he had done on my vintage Buicks. By the time he was done with the repair on the Maxima which was covered by insurance, even I couldn't tell where the damage had occurred and I knew where to look. It will probably show up on a Car Fax report if I ever sell the car, but that is a non-issue for me.

OMG this brings back some memories. The paint on the upper surfaces cracked due to bad primer. Check the exhaust manifolds, they all crack. I would highly suggest that you check both the oil supply and return lines for the turbo just to make sure everything is clean and flowing oil. If any of that goes bad it runs metal through both the motor and the turbo. I would also suggest replacing the hoses on the intercooler and intake pipe, those were not very good and had a tendency to blow off easy under boost. I do miss mine. I hope you keep it, so I can continue to enjoy the stroll down memory lane!

My dad had a white regal T-type which had the same engine as the grand national but with more options, colors and chrome bumpers! Loved driving this car as a teenager and working on it. Hello Hoovie! Steve Mags here. I like your Grand National look-see! I remember when you bought it at the recent Barrett-Jackson West Palm auction and seeing you parking it at the hotel! One nifty detail about that dash....one of the idiot lights on the right bank is marked "POWER INJECTION" but you'll NEVER SEE it unless you shine a powerful flashlight onto the lens face! Its a "dormant gene" left over from a dead-ended 1984-up Buick water injection system that never entered production. Obviously nobody told the dash lens contract manufacturer to scrub the "POWER INJECTION" marking / lens from the dash fascia before vehicle installation began! Grab a bright light and shine it 2/3 of the way down the R.H. idiot light stack. A nifty Easter egg from Buick! Love your channel, and you are a BIG influence on me and my Junkyard Crawl series. Having had a Regal in the past, the main issue with the front end is that the entire front forward of the hood is fiberglass and plastic aside from the bumper. If you tap something or clip it on something even a little bit, it simply disintegrates and is 100% non-repairable. The entire front piece has to be replaced. It's also flimsy enough that it provides zero impact protection, so a 5 or 10mph oops in a parking lot is the front fenders, radiator, and front end/grille all having to be looked at. Almost every one of these old cars has had the front rebuilt as it's very common to destroy them. One a special model like this, finding the proper front grille... not cheap.
@toddcutsuries54
@toddcutsuries54 Жыл бұрын
I had a 87 T Type and yes, the front clip was fiberglass and the trim below the clip was color matched vinyl. However, the bumpers were pretty solid and could be straightened, but more commonly, the bumper shocks were what failed in light impact collisions. The ease of repairing these front ends was epically easy. If you found parts of the same color you could fix in less than 2hrs time. The rubber strip on bumper was probably the most annoying cause it didn’t take much to mar that thing up. $35 at the dealership (in 1987 that is). This vehicle was an awesome find.

The Wizard laughs at you laying on the ground in pain and then immediates states that he's worried about you. Green wicking Loctite is also a great product for sealing up porous castings and pinhole leaks. It wicks into the casting and then dries hard as a rock. Better than silly cone. What it's primarily made for is wicking into threads on bolts that are already tight and then becoming very hard like normal green loctite.

if I'm not mistaken, your 'stang had 225 hp right? There was lots you could do to it to up that number (polishing the intake plenum was popular) but off the rip not a lot compared to the grand nash. A co-worker had a pic of his doing a wheelie at the drag strip.

@@muskokamike127 Yep. Power adders and aftermarket heads were just coming on line back then. Eventually 5.0 world figured out that above 500 HP the stock 302 blocks would sort of split in two. IDK. Back then I was doing good to make car and insurance payments at age 21, I needed that car to stay trouble free. Besides, I had just put my 429 police engine swapped 1972 Mach 1 together, I wanted to save the mods for it. (As a side note: Installing a set of Hooker two piece long tube headers on a 429 in a ‘72 Mustang is an exercise that added a rich variety of four letter words to my vocabulary!)

@@F9FCJ429 As for the mach 1, oddly enough that's not the first time I heard that tale of woe haha. Didn't the mach 1 come with an optional 429 though from the factory? The 5.0 mustang was kick of the hill for a while with 225 hp. then GM came along with the Grand nash and said "hold my beer". I think the iroc had 225 but it was a much bigger car so it was moot.

Tyler PLEASE read this. These cars absolutely, hands down, need a GN specialist. Have a GN guy look it over and give it a spring cleaning. Vortex Buicks is a great site if you want Wizard to do it. Will help him with the absolute Rubics Cube these are.
@HSTvids357
@HSTvids357 Жыл бұрын
They really aren't even rubix cube hard, they just have some quirks. It's easy enough to study on that it hurts to watch people just...not. leaning on it with audible detonation will work out well I'm sure.

@@HSTvids357 What I was trying to get across was these are cars that a standard mechanic will start diving into and make things worse. Wizard likely doesn’t have the time to learn the “GN quirks” and it would make good content to bring it to a specialist and film it.

As mentioned, that doesn't appear to be the original 8.5 rear. As for driveshaft, Pat's could likely look it up for you

I love the center high mounted brake light. It is obviously a manufacturer add-on prior to the light being integrated into the body. Bought a '65 Corvair from a guy who had one of these. Beautiful cars!

junk yard markings on the rear axle (rear side by left shock) might tell you why the driveshaft was replaced. someone probably blew up the rear end and twisted the driveshaft.

I would have the undercarriage dry ice blasted and have it sprayed with cosmoline it’ll look like brand new, paint correction and ceramic coating. But then I’d be afraid to drive it haha. Great purchase Hoovie!

It will need a new rear main seal if the original is still on it. Kirban's Performance sells an improved design, best have one on hand because they will all eventually leak. Nice score, driving my 5th since 1985.

In 1987, there was the GNX which had a bigger turbo, better suspension, better intakes and exhaust. But I would still love to own a GN anyday of the week.

I suspect if you look very closely, you will find out that the car got "front clipped". The front of the car (including the frame rails) is in much better shape than the rest. I think if you check, the "clean" is going to stop right around the subframe connectors. They likely bolted back on the original suspension and all to save a bit, but the parts are about 2k and about 8 to 10 hours work, plus body panels and paint, and you can make it to 10k without effort.

The 1987 Buick Regal (Grand National's base) was a full perimeter frame car, not a unit-body with subframe.

It's the type of car one would consider a modern classic Gentleman's hotrod. You can stare at em all day. That's the kid in you in love with a new toy. My First Car very first car was a 1986 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme G body with a olds 307 ci. The saddest day when it was t boned in the rear quarter in 1998 by a 1987 Dodge Caravan😢 my heart hasn't been right since. 💔
