That feels like a pretty big assumption to me. The quill is magical. All it requires is her to put it to the contract and it signs her name for her (she closes her eyes and looks away when this happens; who writes without looking at what they are writing?). It's like a magical version of the modern "click to sign" digital contracts. You don't have to be capable of writing to sign it.

15:05 In fairness, Sebastian has a ticking clock for securing a kiss (hence the lyrics emphasizing the kiss first). Also, kissing, even in these circumstances, is usually preceded by "leaning in for a kiss". That's the signal. That is the communication and request for consent (typically signified by the kissee leaning forward in kind). Not all romantic interactions need the signed and notarized contracts of Fifty Shades of Gray.

At no point has Ariel proven that she can be a mature, capable adult to Triton, nor would he have any reason to believe that she ran away to be with Eric more than she ran away to get away from Triton, so I don't see why Triton would bless this marriage other than Disney logic. @@aclassicguardsman946 Good points. Had the filmmakers of “The Little Mermaid” kept the deleted alternate ending, it would have given Ariel a much needed redemption arc, since Ariel’s apology in the deleted scene is a lot more *sincere* (only after she regains consciousness does she tearfully say to her father, *”Oh, Daddy. Daddy, I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you...”):* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fKxgkq183ranp3k.htmlm29s . According to the film’s audio commentary track, the alternate ending was cut because then-Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg had just seen the 1988 action film “Die Hard”, and he told “The Little Mermaid” directors John Musker and Ron Clements to make the ending *”more like ‘Die Hard’” (“Guys, guys, I want to see more ‘Die Hard’!”).* YES, REALLY! In other words, Katzenberg wanted to make the climax more epic, which explains why Ursula becomes gigantic in the final film. Damn you, Jeffrey Katzenberg! 😤 At least the Broadway version gave Ariel more agency in the climax as she kills Ursula by breaking Ursula’s conch shell into the ground, and Ariel’s apology to her father is a lot more genuine as she tells him *”I’ve caused you so much trouble. Can you ever forgive me?”:* kzfaq.info/get/bejne/br9zf9iq0dKqZHU.htmlm40s Also, in the live action remake, Ariel feels actual remorse when she says to Triton, *”I’m sorry, father. This is all my fault”,* in response to Ursula telling Triton that she and Ariel made a deal.

@@moonman239 Ursula was a villain being a villain :) I wouldn't be surprised if she had no problem with the idea of Ariel drowning because that would destroy Triton. Look at how much it destroyed him when his wife was taken from him in the prequel. At least in the Hans Christian Anderson story, the sea witch told the mermaid to drink the potion while on land so she wouldn't drown. It's not as dramatic as what Disney did in the animated retelling, but at least the mermaid had a far higher chance of surviving. There was no set time limit in the story too, which gave more time for a relationship to develop, so long as the prince didn't marry someone else. Ursula basically set things up for Ariel to fail in various ways.

This movie will always remind me of the time when I worked in a certain chain seafood restaurant that rhymes with Dead Mobster. On busy evenings when there was a long wait for tables, we would bring out a TV and VCR (yes, it was that long ago) and play movies to keep the kids entertained so they wouldn’t start having meltdowns from being bored. Well, one of the movies we would play happened to be “The Little Mermaid”. I tried to point out that this might not be the most appropriate movie to show to kids who were waiting to eat in a seafood restaurant, attempting to paint a picture of little sally having a meltdown and screaming “Mommy, are we going to eat Sebastian??” Management was, of course, completely oblivious to the irony. I was but a mere six dollar an hour hostess, so what would I possibly know about management level decisions such as choosing what movies to play for children waiting to eat Flounder? EDIT: to those asking for more of the story, sorry but there really isn’t more. I didn’t work there very long, it was a second job I had for a couple of months over 30 years ago and I honestly can’t remember if any meltdowns that occurred on my shift were due to exposure to animated seafood. I just always found it amusing that no one else there seemed to understand the irony.

to stay human Ariel HAS to make him at least lust for her or she cant stay human and explore the on land life. lust and love were somewhat mixed terminology back then.this story had much darker undertones back when it was written as well. she just has to obtain a kiss in the disney version though. as for the few days thing. women were property back then. a marriage could literally happen within a month since arranged marriages happened OFTEN. the parents would get things squared away with the husband (or his family). then poof she gets a week to at best a couple months to get to know each other. then you gotta show the family a blood stained sheet on your marriage night proving she was a virgin. only nobility really had long term courtships since marriage amongst the poor carried a transfers of wealth/goods between the two families.

im gonna lean hard on magic. even though ursula would be considered an evil genie trope (makes deals but doesnt always explain it to the fullest) she still has to make it so ariel lives to fail her contract. what we should really be sinning is how a 10 ounce crab and a not so good at swimming fish torpedoed her to the surface so fast.

@@jakushkadarkstalker6278 Guess it would depend on what form of respiration mermaids were naturally doing. Would assume whatever oxygen was already in the system would continue doing whatever it was already doing. What would be in question however is her lungs. Did magic replace her previous organs with human organs? Would they be filled with water, air, or vacuum? Probably should've got to land and expelled a lot of water, but I'm sure Disney didn't want to animate that.

There’s more: Ariel not being a full human before is able to control a horse carriage and make it jump over a cliff and is also unaware of casualties or near death. Also after Ursula’s death how did the trident fall back towards the King Triton Polyp?? Is it just like “the wand chooses the wizard”??

One thing i've always wondered is.... How does Scuttle even know what the Sea Witch looks like? He's a seagull after all and only goes into the water for prey

I mean there are many issues with both Ariel and Eric, more so Ariel, but he is definitely better than Gaston. Eric genuinely cares about others, Gaston is a narcissist who wants to force Belle to be his, Eric believes in choice and doesn't push anyone to obey him.

My autistic brother used to watch this on a loop. Now that I spend a lot more time looking after him, I try and play this in the background for him (he's also blind, but really loves the songs).

Wait a moment... Pretty sure this movie predates both Sonic The Hedgehog and Naruto. So with her arms behind her when she runs like that... Did Ariel invent the Naruto/Sonic run? Should we have been calling it the Mermaid Dash this whole time?🤯
