The Princess Bride is one of the greatest movies ever made, full stop.
We still sinned it, because that's sort of what we do, and we've been doing it for, like, 8 years now. Not sure why you're surprised.
Thursday: 2019 award-season sins.
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins should we count next?

I'm personally taking off five sins for the line "I want my father back, you son of a bitch." If what I've heard is correct, the actor for Inigo connected with it a lot because he thought of his own father that died of cancer. Makes it more powerful and sad in my opinion.

2:42 The book (and yes, believe it or not, the movie about a book is actually based on a book about a book) actually gives some more context in that it provides some backstory for Fezzik and Inigo. Thing is, Fezzik was always pretty big as a kid and so his parents eventually decided that they wanted to make him a wrestler. But it really made him unhappy since, even though he won all of his fights, people booed at him because he was utterly massive and only winning due to his strength, making it seem like he was picking on his opponents. He also was being bullied all the time. It was in greenland that both of his parents passed on from a disease and Fezzik was just very lonely with not even the faintest idea on what to do, even more scared of other people than they were of him. Suffice to say, Fezzik doesn't have pleasant memories in regards to Greenland.

That’s both hilariously and tragically ironic that the character played by one of the most admired professional wrestlers in the world has a backstory about being a wrestler and hating it, and being thought of as a freak of nature by the general population (which somewhat resembles the hardships of André René Roussimoff (a.k.a. André the Giant), who was also mocked at times for being an extraordinary human being.) And it’s even more ironic when you consider that the book’s author (who also wrote the movie adaptation) wrote the character of Fezzik with André specifically in mind.

Fun fact: they shot the scene outside the fire swamp before they filmed Westley and Inigo's duel. Somebody in production told the 6 finger man to straight up hit Cary Elwes on the head with the pretty realistic prop sword. So Christopher Guest hit him, knocked Elwes out and sent him to the hospital with a concussion, and that is the one and only take they were able to get of that shot. So when they got to the end of the duel, no one was allowed to actually hit anybody.

It was Cary who told Chris Guest to hit him for real . They had done several takes with Guest fake hitting him but Elwes reaction had been either too slow or too fast so Cary told him to give him a bit of a “love tap “ so Cary could react just at the right moment . Problem is Guest used a bit too much momentum and legit knocked Cary out cold sending him to the hospital. So as you say , when it came time to film the Wesley/Inigo duel , no chances were made hence the shot to “hit” Inigo from behind where you can easily conceal the fact Cary didn’t actually hit him. Elwes relates the experience in his book “As You Wish” I highly recommend it to PB fans (most especially the audio book version where Elwes reads it himself)

The fencing scene was truly a masterpiece. And the fact that they were so polite about it kinda is historically accurate, since fencing was a gentlemen’s sport in the setting of the movie. Also, my dad yells “Have fun stormin’ the castle!” every time someone leaves. Inigo's "inconceivable" line does make perfect sense. He's pointing out how it shouldn't be used to describe things that are happening in plain sight right in front of them. It's like when people use "literally" to mean "figuratively" - it crosses the line from exaggeration to being the opposite of the word's definition.
@NacManInc
@NacManInc 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure. Inconceivable describes Mental Comprehension; which is subjective. For, example, you can watch someone perform magic and not understand how it is done. Even though it is happening in plain sight, it is still inconceivable (to you), but to another magician who also knows the trick, it wouldn't be.The definition and use of 'literally' is much more objective. I think the joke in the movie is just suppose to be that his repeated use of the word inconceivable makes him sound dumb because it means he has very little mental capacity to understand anything.
@suhnshaiene
@suhnshaiene 3 жыл бұрын
Also also, there is no "line" to cross between exaggeration and opposites. All figurative language involves the repurposing of literal language; the word "literally" is not somehow magically exempt from the process of coloring one's own speech. If you're able to recognize the intended meaning when someone says "literally" well enough to "correct" them, then they have communicated their intended meaning well enough for you to understand and in fact it is you who is incorrect for supposing they didn't understand their own language.
@daviderickson8699
@daviderickson8699 3 жыл бұрын
@@NacManInc I don't think "conceive" = "comprehend." "Conceive" is about believing or imagining something to be possible. Comprehend is about understanding the workings of that thing. I would never have conceived of quantum physics phenomena, but now I have read enough to know there is experimental support for it. Now I'm a believer that it's possible, but I can't understand it in the least. It's conceivable but not comprehensible to me. The joke of the line is that he is gently ribbing his boss for not believing his own eyes. I think it is one of the best lines because he is trying not to be condescending but he is kind of low-key trolling.
@daviderickson8699
@daviderickson8699 3 жыл бұрын
@@suhnshaiene Not that I go around "correcting" people who say "literally" for "figuratively," but I do form the impression that they didn't give a lot of thought to the choice of words. I of course realize that people say it to embellish the story, and I of course realize that the movie use of "inconceivable" was to convey astonishment. My point is that when someone uses a word intended to exaggerate / embellish / emphasize, but choose a word that potentially changes the meaning, it's noticeable. And Inigo in the movie ribbed him for it - it was funny. As for "literally" itself - just because of its definition, it is more noticeable to me when people use it figuratively - just the irony of it I guess. So while everyone of course is free to choose their own words, everyone that hears them is free to form their opinions on those choices. And sometimes it's funny, like in a movie.
@suhnshaiene
@suhnshaiene 3 жыл бұрын
@@daviderickson8699 "who say 'literally' for 'figuratively'" That's actually still a misunderstanding of the situation. They aren't saying "literally" when what they really mean is "figuratively". They are saying a sentence that is, in its entirety, figurative. The literal meaning of the words, while useful in determining the intended irony (which you admit to detecting but believe to be.. accidental? I guess?), is irrelevant to the actual intended meaning. This includes the word "literally". For a more accepted version of very similar linguistic tactics, look at a sentence that begins with "I can't imagine...". While it is possible to form such a sentence for things that one is actually unable to pretend, it is very frequently used to point out a related example of something that exists by common knowledge. "I can't imagine someone dumb enough to start a land war in Asia" was common during the Bush administration. Opposite language is extremely commonly used for juxtaposition, relying on the listener's ability to detect irony. For whatever reason, the specific case of using "literally" for this exact purpose has been widely decried as incorrect, despite being structurally identical to other ironic or otherwise figurative statements.

Inigo’s phrase “I do not think it means what you think it means” is a joke about how those feats cannot really be inconceivable since Wesley conceived them. I'm a wedding officiant, and I had a bride ask me to do "the voice from the Princess Bride". I did it at the beginning of the wedding (including the initial part of his speech), and it was funny. Especially when I switched back to my actual voice for the wedding

I have to give credit though, this movie was made in 1987 and walked away with less than 100 sins while being complemented for being “a nearly perfect movie” several times... many sins I feel where forced to keep sinning but honestly, I’m not even mad 😊

The definition of inconceivable actually uses unbelievable as one meaning so no, they essentially mean the same thing. "not capable of being imagined or grasped mentally; unbelievable"

Yes, but it's still slightly different. "Unable to conceive" makes more sense than unbelievable, especially in this context, since he keeps using the word incorrectly

Yeah. Someone needs to explain to CSG that back in the 80s, parents trusted other adults implicitly with their childrens' lives. Like, not even relatives, just ANY other adults. And sure, that was naieve as fuck, but we've definitely swung the pendulum way too far in the other direction at this point.

@dipperjc
@dipperjc 3 жыл бұрын
@@ajd2393 The paranoia (or lack thereof) is a question of motivation. If you're wandering over to join them, or to ask them if they want PB&J, then no, not paranoid. If you're doing it from a place of suspicion and mistrust... paranoid. Well-adjusted children need the opportunity to form bonds with adults besides their parents. They need to be able to have relationships with those adults that involve their own sense of trust and confidence (because who are they supposed to go to if their parents are the source of their problems, the parents themselves?), and their privacy needs to be respected. I'd have serious issues if they just barged in on grandpa and grandson without the courtesy of knocking first. As the saying goes, "It takes a village." I doubt we're going to see eye to eye on this, and that's fine, to each their own. Agree to disagree and all that. Just remember that trust breeds trust, and the most important part of parenting is that your children trust *you* to be able to go to you with problems. If you're stifling their healthy interactions with other mentors, that's going to impact their perception of you as someone to come to rather than hide things from.
