I could listen to Hank Jones explain his approach and influences in jazz piano all day. That guy just had a way of making things very clear and understandable. Then, if you're lucky, you get to hear him play. We who have seen this clip should consider ourselves lucky that Bret shared this with us. Thanks JVG.

I've been knocked in the skull by the playing on this vid. I'm struck by Hank's look of leisurely glee as he unveils amazing progressions smooth as whiskey with a rasp of sandpaper.

I only hear the music when I listen to Hank Jones. Such a humble man. He deserves more recognition. People will be listening to these interviews centuries from now, if we last that long.

Hank actually introduced me to Philly Joe. It was in the upstairs lounge at the Blue Note. This would have '83 or '84. They were the rhythm section (with Red Mitchell) for a vocalese group fronted by Jon Hendricks. I was totally mad for the first quintet, and Philly Joe was my man. It was Internetless vinyl days, so I barely knew what they looked like, even though it felt like meeting the Beatles for me. It was a big night though, everyone in tails, Tony Bennett was there to see the show, they were all regal and stuff. They were very kind to us, Hank especially, he was courtly, sheer class.

Stunning and so inspiring. As has been said 2 piano jazz doesn’t always gel but these two masters and ‘gentlemen’ of Jazz piano know the importance of space and less is more. Wonderful. Thanks for posting!

Thank you Bret. In this conversation Mr Jones might not have mentioned a point that Mr Oscar Peterson has mentioned in conversations with other TV hosts, that they were also touched by the elegance of Nat Cole's pianism. I remember the earliest recordings [c. 1953] by Hank Jones heading his own trio, the liner notes had thoughts communicated by Cole, writing about the flavour and conceptions of the then youthful Jones. I wonder if you've heard from Hank Jones about Nat Cole's playing. In this, he certainly spoke about Teddy Wilson.

Very instructive interview, followed by a beautiful match up in playing All the Things You Are. Both are masters, and play with elegance and apparent ease. I think one true sign of many great players is that they make it look effortless - both jazz and classical players. Thanks for another great video!

I treasure this stuff. Of course, Hank might have been my all-time favorite pianist! For the record, I hired Dennis Mackrel and Darryl Hall for a gig back in 1997, I think. Next thing, Dennis recommended Darryl to play with Hank Jones! So I guess I was the catalyst...!

Keep it going Bret. I've got 3 of yours to listen to now . AND .. maybe more importantly, these archival dives into the reminiscences, technique and ideas of PRE-Miles/Trane; PRE-jaxz-rock exponents of The Ultimate Gente serve to EDUCATE ME regarding both who played with whom before and who not only INFLUENCED whom but also how the INTERACTION between these foundational geniuses shaped the brilliant YET (the sadly ignored and underrated) arr form known as "modern jazz" which has informed the listening tastes of ALL of us .. INCLUDING you and me!! 👍👍👍 Right: hitting the NEXT of your listing NOW!!!
