I am a doctor. The face mites and Aspergillus are always there, however the Hookworms and the Itchmites are only in the body when infested; which is rare nowadays with the medical and sanitary advancement.

It may be good to clarify at ~ 1:05 that the pie chart is by number of cells, not mass of cells! Bacteria are often much smaller than human cells.

O honestly got a bit confused about the division here. Intestinal flora is necessary for us, and a positive thing overall. But those hookworms are obviously a parasitic disease. Now I don't know if the other organisms mentioned in the video love in us but are ok, or are a disease. This could have been a little bit better explained

Yes. I loved the video, but he could've said that not all those species are welcome in our bodies. I'm not an expert, but to make it easier for you, I'm going to divide it into three groups: 1. The harmless: like the bacteria he mentioned that help us digest carbs. They are very helpful so we need them. 2. The harmless that depend on our immune system: like Aspergillus that we breath in every day but the immune system quickly stops from growing. So in a person with AIDS, for example, they become harmful. 3. The harmful: like the hookworms and the itch mites, they are always undesirable. Hopefully it was helpful.

I don’t want to speculate intentions but I’d imagine that some of the lack of explanation is simply that the categories of helpful and harmful are blurry when it comes to microorganisms and can even change. It’s sounds oversimplified but really we only think of something as a disease if it gets us sick. For example most of the bacteria in the gut has no benefit or harm directly to its host, but would be incredibly destructive if it entered the bloodstream. And the bacteria that doesn’t do anything would be detrimental to lose because it prevents something nastier from taking its place just by being there. These are the kind of things that takes a semester in college to begin to understand.

Demodex? Yep, everyone has them, but some people are sensitive or allergic to them, or are unhealthy and can't keep them in check. This happens with dogs, too, who also have demodectic mites on their skin. If a dog has other health issues or is over-sensitive to the mites, they'll lose their hair and their skin will get dry, flaky and inflamed. They'll also need medication and topical treatment to keep them at bay. When this happens, it's called demodectic mange.

Learning about gut bacteria actually helped me with an eating disorder as a kid. I felt so bad about not giving them food or overwhelming them with too much food. I knew they weren’t actually sentient but I still felt guilty. Even as an adult it’s motivating to eat healthy because even if I don’t feel like taking care of myself, I feel responsible for the health of the microscopic creatures on and in my body.

I imagine if they were harmful enough, our bodies would have sufficient defence mechanisms. In fact, most of these critters probably do get eliminated when they come in contact with our defences. For the most part, though, they're just hitching a ride on the huge masses of life and energy that are our bodies

The hookworms and itch mites produce parasitic diseases and therefore those patients need to be treated. The first one causes anemia and protein deficiency impairing children's growth and mental development, the second one causes severe itch and bacterial infection by scratching. By the way, don't worry too much about walking bare footed! Hookworms infections only occur if the soil is contaminated with human feces from people infected.

Could you kill them say by soaking your face/submerging yourself in water using something to breathe while they drown, or something in the water that would kill them.
