First of all thank you for this video, I got it when I was 17, 54 now. Was married for 28 years now divorced. I gave up on relationships, when you let people know you have this , they treat you like a leper.

My partner gets it on the mouth but very rarely and only after a lot of stress. Funny how it stays dormant for years and year and all of a sudden there it is. I got shingles 20 years ago but it was a small outbreak and caught it in time. Don’t want it again. Father in law got shingles in the ear and moved to his eye and it was awful. No damage to his sight thank goodness.

I'd like to know the factors for lowering infection risk. For instance... Some medical sources say that if you already have HSV1 you can't (as easily) get another infection. Others say the opposite. From what I understand shedding is more frequent in the first years after primary infection? Antiviral drugs half the risk (roughly)? I mean... Let's look at a scenario with a relationship with unprotected oral sex in asymptomatic periods. ... How low can you get the risk? Can it get as low as the risk you in general have with new relationships? Bonus question... If already having HSV1 reduce the risk of a secondary infection... Would it be totally insane to acquire HSV1 on purpose in a more convenient place than genitals/mouth?

I have 3 places on my top lip i get Herpes at one shows up on the right side then that heals than one starts in the middle than heals and then left side and then heals and this happens every month . Usually when i eat spicy foods or my anxiety goe through the roof,and its painful and hurts and i want to die ,it takes two to 3 weeks to go through its process of healing and the scabs over bleeds and scabs over again and finally slowly goes away. Hi dr I got test last Friday for hsv2 could my blood test be wrong. If I have other infections going on like bv and yeast ? Hello dr Brett. Two years ago I was diagnosed with HSV 1 and 2. Ever since I got it I’ve had a few small white bumps in the area. It never got better or worse so I wouldn’t think of it as an outbreak maybe. Is this normal?

Hi Dr Bret - I have one more question. When I was visiting my doctor today, we spoke about herpes testing. She said she will NEVER routinely blood test patients for HSV 1 and 2 and advises against this practice unless in exceptional circumstances. She said the results send people into an un necessary tailspin ( and they do, I agree ). But then what happens is you have a bunch of people walking around with a transmissible virus they know nothing about. Her view is, herpes is normal irrespective of type. 1 or 2, doesn’t matter. Can I please get your opinion on this.

Hi, thanks for this video. I’ve read that HSV2 is rarely transmitted orally. I’ve also read that taking prep orally helps reduce the risk of transmission by 33% in heterosexual couples. Do you know the likelihood of a gay, seronegative prep patient(in a discordant relationship) contracting HsV2 via unprotected oral sex and outercourse(penis-penis running) with someone who’s been positive and never been symptomatic(even though he’s had it for over 2 years) and isn’t on medication? Also, is it true that being HSV1 positive slightly lowers the chance of infection of HSV2 due to antibodies already present in the body? Last, how would you describe the genital tingling cause by hsv2? Like, what does it feel like? How long does it last? Is it usually only limited to prodrome or is it also common during the first outbreak?

Hello Dr Palmer. I see that acyclovir/valacylovir still the standard protocol for episodic and transmission therapies for HSV2. Do you think there will ever be a type of at home rapid test for detection of infectious particles on the skin and mucosal surfaces? The greatest fear expressed by our patients is spreading to their partners. They often don't like to use barriers, especially the female condom in monogamous relationships. Because the nucleoside analogues are not 100% effective in preventing transmission, of course the patient cannot know when they are shedding enough of a load to transmit. Do you think an at-home swab would be a good addition to the HSV tool kit? Thank you.

Hi Dr Bret, you mention that there is little difference between the types 1 and 2 and infact I have a good friend that has a type 2 cold sore around her mouth that recurs every few years. You said that you advise patients to tell new partners that they do get cold sores or they have had cold sores in the past... do you have to be specific and say - I have Type 1 and 2? Or can you just say, I have or have had cold sores? ( this is irrespective of where they appear oral or genital or anywhere else for that matter ) sorry for the lengthy question.

Hi Dr. Palmer. I have a question. Can herpes symptoms last for 2 months? I have recently been diagnosed with HSV 2. I started having symptoms (blisters, discharge, itching) on April 7, went to the Dr by April 13, I got some blood tests done and she prescribed valacyclovir. My blisters went away in about 2 weeks but all other symtoms remained. I went back to the Dr on May 16 for my blood test results. IGM came back positive but IGG negative. She examined me again because I was still having symptoms. She said the area still looks pretty irritated and she again prescribed valacyclovir. It has been almost 2 months now since my diagnosis and I am still experiencing irritation in the area. My vulva is irritated and between my butt cheeks is also irritated. There are no blisters at all though.

Hey Dr.Palmer, I recently took an igg test specific for hsv2 with a score of 1.89 and a positive reflex. I never had a symptom before, I was tested because my partner grew sores on her tongue after oral sex which ended being canker sores not herpes. She tested as well with a negative igg and negative pcr swab. My doctor and urologist believe I had a false positive because of all the evidence from my girlfriend and due to me only having one sexual encounter before her in my life. They tested me with a blood pcr test and I was tested negative and yes I do cold sores on my mouth during the winter. Do you think I should be concerned at all or worry if I date a new girl about spreading it to her?

Why does the index number on igg testing increase? For example if it’s 2 and the at retest it’s 5.

Hi Dr. Palmer. I hope you are well. I have a question. I have recently been diagnosed with HSV 2 as my igm test was positive. I was wondering if there is a possibility of a false positive? I am HSV 1 positive (have been for about 11 years). I did the HSV 2 igg and igm test. The igg reading was 0.02 and the igm reading was 2.07. N.B: I got tested because I was experiencing symptoms of genital herpes. I had 2 blisters (1 on each side of my vulva), a bad discharge, irritation and burning when peeing. I realised that this video was posted a while back but I really hope you see this and get a chance to reply.
