When cutting off the flowers that are wilting after fully blossoming, cut lower down the stem just above another set of leaves...It's call dead heading and encourages more flowers growth...When you leave the flower to dry out on the plant it sends a signal to the plant that it's dying so the plant slows down and eventually stops flowering sooner...So removing the flowers before they're fully dead encourages more flower growth...

I place tomato cages around my tall marigold and tuck in the stems as they grow and then no flopping or breaking occurs! :)

Thank you so much! That was very nice of you. African marigolds are one of our favorite plants to grow, of course behind canna lilies, lol. We've been growing them for years. If you're interested in marigolds, we have another video on How to Collect the Seeds. Thank you again for your comment.

Very nice video! I will try African Marigolds next year, but in Wisconsin, I think that I'll be lucky if they bloom by August. Consider discontinuing deadheading to ease life for the finches. If some seeds are easy to get, they may stop pecking at the growing flowers. I grow sunflowers especially to attract birds, so it's a matter of perspective.

I'm wayyy north of you in Alberta, Canada, I sow the tall marigolds about 6 weeks early indoors and these usually then produce their first blooms by mid July and continue heavy production through to first frost in late September or into October depending on the season. 'Garland Orange' is one of the best, though is no longer readily available, the last two years I've been growing 'Garunda', this variety is later blooming, so I sow about mid March and then WOW, what a show they put on!!

Very very beautiful gardens. When I cut my African Marigolds back, I clean up the clippings, stick the bottom in a rooting powder, put a small hole in the ground soil, push the clipping in the hole, make certain the hole is closed tightly, water the clipping everyday until the clipping looks happy again. By then, roots have formed. That's my cheating method if I don't want to grow from a seed

Hi @blackberry1134 : Thanks for the comment and thanks for the compliment. We do love our African Marigolds. We have the new ones growing now and they're really taking off. They should be the same size as the ones in this video, in about a month. We'll do another video showing what Garden West looks like, once they're all grown up. Best of luck with your Marigolds. :-) Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

Hi Leslie: Thanks for the comment. African Marigolds are beautiful, easy to grow and produce incredible amounts of seeds. Once you grow your 1st plant, you'll never need to buy any seeds again. Each bud can produce close to 100 seeds. If you are thinking of growing them, you can check out our video on how to collect the seeds: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j8dkgbFhv9PGemQ.html Also, we will be selling African Marigold seeds from our garden on our Etsy site: J&D Gardens NJ Thanks for watching! Thank you for this 😊 your marigolds look lovely! Bonide neem oil unfortunately has only 1% neem oil and 99% "other" unlisted ingedients. I purchased a bottle of pure neem oil off of Amazon. It stinks and looks like poop but it's the real stuff. I'm from a farmer's family from India and have used neem oil earlier. That's how pure neem oil is supposed to look. It also takes a while to dissolve in water. Need to use warm water + castile soap, lather it really well and then add neem oil to it. Shake shake shake. Takes some effort to mix

Hi Crypto Bates: Thanks for the comment. African Marigolds are great. They have beautiful colors and in it's size compared to regular Marigolds. Also, they produce an incredible amount of seeds for the next season. The only problems you have to watch out is for those darn yellow finches ;-) . Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

Thank you for so much information! I got my first 2 tiny African marigolds and one broke just like you described. I decided to put it in distilled water like I do with all my cuttings, and it’s rooting. So excited to keep propagating. 😅 I’m in zone 9b Auburndale, FL

awe...the little finches need to eat. they are stunning even sharing them with the birds....i throw seeds in the ground directly and thin them out. they do get unwieldy so i will use your advice. thank you!

Hi @songbirdsinging1878 . Thanks for the comment. Yes, finches are very pretty birds but if you see the massacre they make out of our marigolds, you might think differently, lol. But we find that if we spray a little more Neem oil on them, it helps deter them and it doesn't hurt the plants. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

Hi @danielburns7519 . Thanks for the comment. Oddly enough, the only time we have problems with the rabbits, is when we 1st plant them and they're very short. Once they grow over a foot tall, they don't come near them, maybe to hide in between them, when Dan is chasing them ;-) . Actually, the only predator that our marigolds have, is like what we say in the video is the NJ state bird. that darned yellow finch. But we're finding ways of deterring them > :-) . Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

@jdgardensnj4563

Hi Amy Lee. You can grow them under the grow lights but African Marigolds get pretty big and unfortunately, they won't last all year long. Their life cycle is about 4-5 months. Thank you for watching.

Hi Hector. Sorry we missed your question. As you saw in the video, when we planted the marigolds, we just gave them some Miracle Gro Shake n Feed and that's it. Other than that - we give them some water and some compost tea. And if you want, you can give them Miracle Gro - they'll like that too. Thanks for watching!

Will this type of marigold come back every year?
@jdgardensnj4563
@jdgardensnj4563 Жыл бұрын
Hi @rosanna5162: Thanks for the comment. Well, here in the northeast (zone 6b), most plants like this will die out during the winter. Now marigolds can produce thousands of seeds during a season that can drop to the ground, but the seeds are actually very fragile and probably wouldn't survive the cold, wet winter. So I would think though that in a more mild climate, if the seeds could survive that cold period, then I would think they could come back. They're not a tropical plant but they do thrive, year round, more in the southern climates (ex. Mexico). Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

I take 20lb fishing line, and tie them into bunches, we get 40+ monsoon winds and I tie the bunches, sort of inter twine them, an I get very little mortality, I prune to shape.

Hi Jo. That's great advice. When we know there's gonna be crazy winds, we like to tie them up to the fence as well., We even do that with some of our taller canna lilies. Thanks for watching!
