Drop D tuning can open up an entire new sonic soundscape, but do you know how best to practice your shapes and scales in this alternate tuning?
On today's episode of Acoustic Tuesday, you're going to get a lesson behind the acoustic guitar lick of the week. Every Tuesday, I offer you a quick lesson on learning an awesome lick. But this week, you'll get to see the theory, rationale, and benefits behind learning the lick this week.
Specifically, this lick focuses on drop D tuning for the acoustic guitar. Drop D tuning is when you turn your low E string to a low D. This gives you awesome bass sounds and can infuse your playing with bluesy mojo sounds.
If you aren't a fan of the blues (to which I say, check yourself!), drop D tuning is used in a variety of different genres. From American Primitive to modern fingerstyle, you're sure to find a great way to apply drop D tuning to your playing.
Besides covering drop D tuning, you'll also hear from TAC Family member Shannon and how building a solid guitar routine helped her in a difficult point in her life. Perhaps her story could inspire you, no?

Thanks, Tony. Although I've been using Drop D tuning for years, I learned a few tips/tricks today. I'll be utilizing my new-found knowledge after work tonight. I love drop D tuning on my D-55; that low D is epic.

Drop D on a Martin HD28….pure heaven. The boom and rumble goes through your whole body. I like to take old Hank Williams songs and play them in drop D. Lost on the river is a good one to play in drop D. Or I’m so lonesome I could cry. Drop D makes them sound even more lonesome and sorrowful by adding the big bass and a bluesy tone

If you do have a tuner and tune the low D perfectly to pitch, it will sound sharp when you play Drop D. If you tune the low D just slightly flat, it will sound perfect. Get that tuner light so that it just flickers to the left of dead center. It took me 55 years of playing Drop D to stumble across that counter-intuitive observation. I have no clue why it works; I just know that it does.

Another fun and interesting Tony Tuesday. My favorite drop D song is This Old Guitar, I play it in double drop D. The song is fun and easy to play and the lyrics really speak to me. This old guitar's not mine to keep I'm just takin care of it now.

Two favorites of mine in drop-D, both very mainstream but completely different styles/vibes: "I Heard It through the Grapevine" -- the CCR cover of this is one of my very favorite rock recordings ever "Never Going Back Again" -- the bouncy little tune from Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" album.

Great example of the Drop D power chord is Neil Young's Cinamon Girl. Although Young uses Double Drop D (both E strings down to D) on the song you can still use those 3 bass strings for the classic riff.

Similarly, Steve Earl plays a lot capoing the top three strings at the second fret. I believe Copperhead Road is played that way.

Also you talking about that particular songwriter is what’s up. I say that because I feel like most folks that get into soulful songwriting fail by playing it too safe. One should strive to be relatable and just just lay it all out there cause the best songs IMO provoke emotion from the listener. Elliott Smith/John Moreland/Conor Oberst/Blaze Foley etc… I’ll def check him out.

I always included the open A string when I played D in stdrd tuning for a fuller sound, not sure why that isn't standard teaching. But love that low D even more. Recently switched to Drop D this last year, not going back. It makes barre chords more fun & actually easier since you can use 2 different fingers to fret the lower three strings and the higher 3 strings (can do this fretting high 3 strings 2 frets above OR 2 frets below your 3 string power chord on the bottom 3 strings). Easier to switch between bar chords based on 5th string and those based on 6th string, and adds the D shape as a full 6-string bar chord, so you can do a set of 1-4-5 chords thing w/o moving and resetting your fingers much, all on the same fret location. I often use my thumb to fret the power chord on the lower 3 strings while fretting with my other fingers down the fretboard.

Love the focus on Drop D. Very useful. I have disappeared from TAC for the last few years as I have decided to focus on mastering irish guitar. I’ve kept my subscription up because I figure I will come back….but wanted to master this and use it as a means for playing with others. So far so good. As a result of the above…I’ve been living in Drop D for about the last year. Really love it…and am preparing to make the push into DAGDAD once I get a little further on up the road. Someday I’ll be back to TAC…in the meantime keep doing what you are doing!

I've been working on guitars for 30 years. I'll bet that Shannon's Yamaha could be made much easier to play. She lamented about painful fingers. Few guitars come with an optimal set-up and ones that have sat in the closet for 10 years are almost certainly in need of attention. Beginners should be encouraged to take their guitars to a repairman or luthier and they won't believe the difference. I agree with you about Gibson's. litigations and your insight as to "what if" regarding Martin. Virtually every acoustic guitar maker starts out building a Martin clone and some never stop.

Well I beleive your rite about a lawsuit that seems frivalous, but companies purchase the trade marks for this purpose in part, so I think companies like Dean should follow propper channels or not rip others off. Maybe Gibsons actions will set a new precidence in the industry, or least get others to take pause and consider what they are planning.

Gibson winning this case and setting precedent may foreshadow dark times for boutique builders - remember Gibson has a storied history in building acoustic guitars and mandolins. Trademark lawsuits are big business for corporate lawyers. It would be sad times, indeed.

Yeah, i'm pretty standoff to buying a Gibson simply based off them attacking every little guy that wants to do something similar. It's one thing if its a direct replica and CLAIMING to be a Gibson but FKKK wouldn't you want people to appreciate your design so much they want to build one similar?

Patents are protection for proprietary inventions. Pay the royalties then incorporate the invention to your own idea. Otherwise, it is theft. I don’t know the particulars surrounding the flying V so I’m not speaking to that, only to patent infringement.

Hasn’t Gibson ever hear that imitation is the highest form of flattery? I personally would take that as a massive compliment. They haven’t gone after Bourgeois for making a guitar that looks like an L-00 so why now?
