this needs a link to a FREE official FOIA request email template that we can copy and paste! the language is too formal to write from your head. journalism students like me are way too busy to copy down this screenshot word by word. Thank you!

She just said there is no template. You write a letter specifying your request. No special language just ask!

I asked the local police department for a list of employees, oath of office, certified copy of insurance, and bond. The department called refusing the request. Are these documents that they are required to have readily available?

I would Google, “___your state___ FOIA laws” and see if what your requesting is required to be released in your state

Judicial Watch Has to file lawsuits to get the information. There are so many exemptions that the government can Hide behind that the law essentially has no teeth.

In Alabama, anything having to do with a crime (reports, body cams, disciplinary records,etc) is not public record... It's BS.

I have my own FOIA person, ask about three, when two fail to receive, they will give you a case worker… just remind them that they have to take it over the phone and ask them their name and position.

If anyone sees this & knows the answer please let me know.... I just had a FOIA request denied because it's still an "ongoing investigation." It was for a traffic stop & a citation for disorderly conduct. The only reason I can think of as to why it would still be an ongoing investigation is because the case hasn't been to court yet. & after it's been through the court & the charges are dropped or he's somehow found guilty, the investigation is closed & I can then get the stuff I'm requesting. Is that correct???????

Rules of discovery should allow you to get the case before it goes to court to properly defend yourself. The ongoing investigation part might be an excuse but at the same time can’t send an incomplete file. Get a consultation with a criminal defense attorney and ask him those questions.

How do you protect yourself beforehand, because we all are aware of the retailation, or harassment from others that believe they are above the law. How long do they have to present the information to you after requesting?

No, you have to be very specific and ask them for information pertaining to something you need to know about that is already public knowledge, or hidden so to speak. There has been instances where something that was asked for was classified but they allowed for it to be declassified, however, don't ask them for classified information as you'll be quickly denied.
