For my new people going into bootcamp or A-school as a HM, Here is some information and pointers i can give as a fairly new Corpsman: 1. Study your ass of in A-school. Being in the 10% of your class pays off. If you want the best chance of choosing where you want to go, or make 3rd class petty officer ASAP, this is the best way to do it. 2. If you choose a C-school straight out of A-school, keep in mind that its likely that you’ll be stuck in Hospitals most of your career. 3. As Nicky said, no one is getting sent straight to a ship straight out of Corps school. 4. Avoid getting in trouble in A-school. It happens in every class, people get sent to DRB or Mast all the time. Just don’t be an idiot. 5. The corpsman advancement rate per last exam was .8%. It is the most competitive rate in the Navy. Stand out. Study your ass off. Take initiative. Be a well rounded sailor. It wont go unnoticed. 6. No one likes a complainer. Make the best of what you’re given, it will make your duty station so much more enjoyable. 7. Talk to people!! Get on good terms with your Senior enlisted sailors, nurses, and doctors. Connections and networking is HUGE. Thats all I can think of. If anyone has questions i will be happy to answer.

Is being in the top 20% better than being in the bottom 20%? You say the top 10% get to first dibs on the orders, but do they dole out the billets based on A-school performance all the way down the list or do they just give billets randomly after the top 10% get their first choice?
@wutang5503
@wutang5503 3 жыл бұрын
Francis Tapon Videos They don’t tell you if performance matters outside of the top ten but I’m pretty sure after the top ten it’s wherever they need you to go. I know for sure if you do average your picks are not getting factored in. You still get to pick a couple of places you would want to go but quite a bit of my friends who did decent actually got sent to basically the opposite of what they wanted lol

I have been watching your videos off and on , and the last one I watched was the one with you finally getting your E6 and completing your degree and applying for OCS. In that video you reflected back on the different things. I think as the ones that have served look back at the decisions we made and the choices we take to get to where we are, we all have goals that we want to accomplish and some we were not able to. As long as I can remember the HM rating is one of the hardest rating to make ranks and many who have served as a HM can attest that. I wished I could have and reflecting back, I put in what I got out of it. Its weird getting out in 1996, here it is 2021, how technology has helped individuals on information to help better prepare for the military. Keep up the good work . Enjoy the videos.

I am going to step out of my box here, hope it helps somebody. The biggest thing about the Hospital Corps is your experience may vary and is luck of the draw most of the time. I have known 2nd classes with six combat deployments with the grunts, I have also known Chiefs who have never deployed even one time. I went to Boot Camp, A school, FMTB, then straight to a platoon in Afghanistan before I even hit my year mark. I have people I know that bounced Hospital to Hospital the whole time, not by choice. The following is anecdotal, and only my opinion, but based on experience. There are generally two ways to play your career, smart and career oriented, or big and dumb. You can get a C school, or be diverse in your billets, and go to school. Or you can get caught up in chasing the combat dragon and burn out at 2nd Class. One gives you the ability to transition one day to civilian medicine easy, the other gives you some sweet stories, pictures, and the ability to shoot a 240 really well. The 2nd also makes you super competitive as a SWAT medic, like write your own ticket competitive. Another thing I want to stress is be aware of what it is you are getting into. The last six years has been real quiet in the military. The wars died down and people are starting to come in who have grand aspirations and wanting to use their benefits. There is nothing wrong with this, but this isnt a definite thing. If the big one kicks off again, your personal goals mean exactly nothing. Wanting to go to college, how about two pumps with 1/2 with a rifle squad. Done with your two deployments and rotating to a hospital to see your family, oh 1/7 needs a combat replacement for 7 months, have fun. It is inherently the most bipolar experience you can have in the Navy, but I would not trade the last ten years for anything.

Hey Nicky! It would be awesome to see a video where you interact with anyone who has gotten out of HM or 68W (Or any other branch's medical roles) and gone on to nursing, PA, or MD. I'm a civilian EMT, I can't afford university, and I'm waiting on a tattoo removal to go to MEPS. I really want to come into HM and use it to my fullest advantage to get medical experience, but with the advancement issues and there being so many people with that job, I'm unsure if HM is the best choice, but I do know that I want to finish a degree and get hands on in medical while being in the service. I'm looking at the 68 series for the army. I've been keeping up with you and Donny and a few other youtubers during quarantine, and I am really inspired by you guys and proud of the moves you've been making. I'd also like to ask that if you could go back to the beginning, would you have done anything differently? As far as branch or job in order to end up so high in medical and have potential civilian options? Thanks so much if you're able to shed some light! I would DM you but I don't have any other social media

I went into the Navy in 2007 with a HMDA contract, my first duty station was a dental tech position but during that time there I got married and had a child, upon my time to pcs I had verbal orders to go to Hawaii as a dental tech, the navy told me they wouldn’t send my family and myself to Hawaii together due to me being an HN at the time so basically I would have to go unaccompanied (without my family) the navy refused to send my family anywhere besides a west coast command. Unfortunately the only billet available was a medical green side command so while I was an 8701 (dental tech designation) I went 8404 ( field medical service corpsman) , PLEASE PLEASE don’t let this discourage you because it was honestly the best thing for me, I learned I was a damn good medical corpsman not only did I stand out as a NCO at my command but it showed me a new love for medicine and a niche at something I was great at. I got out after my 5yrs and landed an amazing job that I love in medical sales. I would encourage you not to allow the diversity discourage you because the HM field is not only something to be proud of but also put you well above your peers when you come back into civilian life.

Respectfully and fervently disagree, instead, first, find a trusted lawyer to review with you any unwanted obligations/responsibilities. Second, be well aware of how strong your bargaining position is: how much sway you have, as opposed to the Navy's need for an individual with your specific training and experience. Last REMEMBER, this is a commitment for MORE YEARS of your life, and, therefore, get a pay off that provides the best duty station and professional

Advancement as a Corpsman is a combination of hitting that top 98% plus on the exam, awards points and PNA (pass but not advance) points, (you’ll learn about those when the first cycle comes around at your first command,) pretty much need the Early Promote (best) eval. With all of that, you should be able to pick up 3rd at least. Second and up on the other hand… Just do your best and never stop learning and taking the opportunities for specialty schools!! Our rate is the best rate for a reason, only the best stick around long enough to become a great Doc! Corpsman Up homie and good luck!
