I just did my first liveaboard and here’s what I learned. - While you will find new friends you are also stuck with the rude types. We had 2 couples on our boat that were rude to everyone. They thought everyone has to cater to their needs, even going so far as to demand people move tables in the dining room so they could eat at the table they wanted. Ignoring them once or twice is no problem. Ignoring them for a week, that was a challenge and it put a bad taste on the entire trip. - You’re stuck on a very, very small boat for an entire week. This was great for a couple of days but after that we wished we were on shore after diving to enjoy local culture and sites. - You’re stuck in a somewhat limited geographical region. Upon the first dive we realized it was an abused diving region with a lot of dead everything due to over-use. Had we done day trips we could have switched to a different region. - There is NOTHING to do besides dive. We have thousands of dives in our log books but we prefer only 2 dives per day. If there’s a night dive, we usually skip the morning dive. But if you’re not diving, you’re not doing anything. Because there’s nothing to do. So we went diving when we didn’t even want to dive, simply because there’s nothing else to do. There are a few regions where we’ll have to do a liveaboard just because of location to the dive sites, but we’ll mostly avoid live-aboards from now on. We found them to be too limiting.

Good to know, if you don’t mind me asking where did you do liveboard? We want to do one in Australia Great Barrier Reef, and if that’s where you did it any tips would be appreciated.

@@luxurytravel759 We haven’t done the GB Reef yet. I’ll have to get tips from you!! LOL We did the liveaboard on the Red Sea. 20 years ago it was probably awesome. From what we saw we wouldn’t recommend it. We’re doing the Galapagos in March (4 day liveaboard) as part of a month+ long visit to Ecuador. We’ll be on shore a lot so it’s a nice mix of boat/land time. And Raja Ampat in December (6 day live aboard) as part of a month+ long visit to that region. Same as above, we’ll have day trips on shore during that period so it’s not a full time liveaboard.

Yes we plan to do the same thing, we are going to Australia in October for a month but we’ll be travelling in different regions, when it comes to Great Barrier Reef we thought doing 3 or 4 day liveboard would be enough for us and stay other 3 nights in whitsundays islands. We have been researching a lot of boat companies, they don’t seem to have anything “this luxurious” as this company advertised here, but there are some good ones. Still very expensive though, for two of us staying in it 3 days 4 night thing I think came to over $7000. Which I thought it was pricey but oh well, this will be our first liveboard. I don’t think I’d want to do it in CARRIBEAN where reefs are accessible by day boat trips. Islands are small enough anyway:) However GBR is soo big and the dives sites liveboard boats take you to is not accessible by day boat trips. So that’s why we decided to give it a try:)) We are new divers so this will be the first time for us:)

#ASKMARK. Very thorough overview; thank you. Two questions about tipping: Is there a norm such that if you tip X% of the cost of the trip nobody will be offended, with room above that for exceptional individual service? Should the tip be given to the boat captain so that it can be split amongst the crew?

In my experience the dive guides will discuss the tip towards the end of the trip and have a pair of envelopes in one of the public areas so that you can tip the crew and guides separately in your own time and the amount you put in is mixed up with the rest of the guests. If you want to tip a particular team member then by all means give it straight to them and Captains are usually honest enough to split tips given to them that are meant for the crew. How much is flexible but, the industry generally accepts 10% of the price of the trip as a tip and you are of course welcome to tip more if you like.

Everybody, liveaboards are awesome. Most require a minimum of 50 logged dives to sign up but if you want to get some great dives they're the best option

can you tell me what the etiquette is regarding a "non Diver" is, my wife does not dive but my son and I do, I would love to book a liveaboard once to take it off my bucket list but would Hate to leave her home! Thank you, and I so enjoy your videos!!!

on which liveaboard can you have five dives a day ?

HI Georgo, you can dive up to 5 dives a day on Turks & Caicos Explorer II (Turks & Caicos) and Caribbean Explorer II (Saba/St Kitts). Over the 7-night trip, you can expect to dive up to 28 times.

@@georgo600 it’s regularly 3 dives +one night dive but I am certain you can get the 5th dive alone with the guide but for extra money .. I go for long liveaboard cruise only once per year but in many weekends I go diving in hurghada for one day it costs 1500 EGP (50 USD) includes 2dives & I request the third one for 600EGP (20USD ) it was always just me and the instructor at the third dive ... also I use 15L tank (Extra 100 EGP per dive ) 3.5 USD

Since we are on this topic, can anyone recommend a good liveboard company in Australia? Great Barrier Reef? 🪸 Please, any suggestion is welcome. Planning to do it in October.
