Karen you make the most useful quilting videos on the internet:) Thank you again for an excellent roundup of stuff I need to further consider. I'd love to see your take on minky backed quilting best practices for having it look and feel the absolute best, maybe with a few options for the minky challenged such as myself. I love it and would like to use it more often. And I'm never sure what batting to use or if I should use it with minky. By the way your method of afterquilting has revolutionized my scrap use.

I’d love a tutorial on other types of backing. I either use 108” backing or flannel sheets as the sheets are pre shrunk so I don’t have to worry about the flannel shrinking too much.

I've used sheets for backing for 2 quilts. One was finished in 1990 and the other in 1999. No problems so far.

Whenever I find a beautiful fabric that I think will make an excellent quilt back, especially if it is on sale, I purchase it and put it in my backings stash. That way it is not an additional expense when I finish my quilt top. I usually choose the back when I begin the quilt, and that way if I dont have one, I can look for one I like that is on sale while I make the quilt. It takes me longer than most to make a quilt, so this works for me. I think backs are very important and should be pretty enough so that the quilt is reversable.

I just dye flat bedsheets. They're designed to wrap the bed, and I've never had trouble getting one big enough!

I love piecing my quilt backings! I use the leftover fabric from the quilt top and combine that with coordinating fabric from my stash. Sometimes my backings are more interesting than the quilt tops! I find that piecing the backing is fun and I feel good that I’m saving money!

Last night, I finished my first quilt with a pieced backing (after quilt). Never again. It was a hot mess and I'm just glad it was the back. I'll stick with a solid backing and find another use for the leftovers.

I try to use up scraps from the front on the back. Often I widen the backing fabric to the needed size by adding a row of scraps running down the middle. Thank you very much Karen for your great video, it is always a pleasure to watch and learn 👍 Greetings from Germany

My favorite backing to add warmth is fireside fleece. It has a nap and a bit of stretch and comes in 60 and 80 inches wide. I quilt with my domestic machine and have quilted up to a king size with fireside on the back. It is heavier than cotton, but i have found it much easier to quilt than minky and still gives you a cozy, comfy quilt. I do use batting with fireside as well.

I used cuddle fleece on the back of a lap quilt without using any batting. I love it. It drapes and wraps around me much better than a quilt with batting.

I used the lightest, thinnest batting I could find for a flannel quilt (both sides flannel). I believe it was Dream cotton “Request”.

I don't use batting when using a fleece blanket ... I glue baste my top and blanket together using Elmer's school glue ... works well!

I had actually thought about doing this for summer Quilts because I think they would be heavy ( which I like) but cool and breathable. The problem was big cotton towels are expensive and I couldn't find the Terrycloth by the meter where I live. In the end it would be way more expensive than normal batting. I don't know though if the little loops in the fabric would interfere with the quilting or even get pulled through the outer fabrics. Still, if I ever find some really cheap on sale I will definitely try it! 😊

I am a new quilter. I haven’t made many quilts at all. The ones I have made are usually baby quilts with stitch in the ditch or simple line quilting. I do love to watch your lessons. You have a calm voice without a lot of silliness or time spent seeking expensive things all through the video. I have learned a lot from you but also realize I need many more lessons, lol. I used leftover fabric to make a pieced back for my very first quilt last year, not realizing the potential challenges. Thankfully, with help from an experienced quilter, it turned out great! Love your videos, encouragement, and style of teaching!

I bought the backing for my son’s queen sized quilt. Paid $100, after doing a video call because he was out of the country and was due back two weeks later and I wanted to get something he liked. When he returned he didn’t like it. I just asked him to give me $100 so I could buy another. After speaking to my quilt shop I mentioned that he didn’t like it. I was so surprised when they offered to take it back for a credit. I took 4 packets of the printable fabric in it’s place. I bought fabric which he liked at another place and I pieced it and hand quilted it in my chosen pattern. I also was able to match the three borders, front and back. And hand quilted everything. So far it is turning out great. I’m just going to do the binding, also hand sewing.

Would love a specialty fabric, especially Minky video. I've made a few quilts with it. The stretch needle in the sewing machine a must. And cleaning machine often, a must. Bonus is no binding.

Hello from Florida I got into quilting during covid19 shutdown and as time went on, I made some adjustments during my quilt sandwich approach. I prefer an old technique of hand tying instead of traditional quilt stitching patterns. And I don't bind, I use the flip inside out technique that I learned from Donna Jordan. Backing...in the past I have purchased yardage to compliment my top, always using cotton. Lately, I have been using queen or king flat sheets from a thrift store and love it. Living in Florida, the quilts need to be light enough for year round use. I really enjoy watching your videos and I get inspired and educated. Thanks, Michael Fedele

After years of piecing backs from 44 inches, I only use wide back for any quilt larger than 44 inches. I use temporary spray adhesive to sandwich the layers and then pin. Some people don't like using the spray. Some do. I've learned to buy quality fabric for the back.

Used flat sheets for backs since the early 1970’s, before the advent of 108” fabric. I will use the extra fabric of the back trimmed and folded over to the front to form a faux binding. I just add real binding if/when the edge starts to show wear.

Yes please. I really would like to know more about using the minky fabrics, specifically the "Cuddle" you buy from Shannon Fabrics. My friends feel that these are a superior product especially if you want to put them into a child's quilt. I have been reluctant to use these fabrics as I really do not know how to use it as a back on a cotton or flannel quilt. My great-niece is only 4 months old so I have at least a year to figure it out. I want her to have a small quilt made with "cuddle" once she is walking so she can drag it with her where she wants it.

I can’t begin to thank you enough for dispensing your vast knowledge of quilting. I have learned so much from your videos. As I think I said previously, I’m 71 and just really getting into quilting. Backing fabric is a huge expense. If I can, I get a 108 so I need less yardage-- but there isn't as much choice in colors or design. I just had to shell out $90 for backing fabric for a queen sized quilt bc I got a 44" fabric. That's the biggest reason I sometimes skimp on how much bigger than my quilt top it is. So far, I've gotten away with it! 😂

I did a heavily pieced quilt backing once and I don’t want to say never again, but… it didn’t help that the top was t-shirts! It’s a beautiful quilt and I’ll love it forever but I wouldn’t do it again.

I often use fleece blankets from Costco or Amazon on the back of winter quilts and omit batting ... I have found glue basting using Elmer's school glue works very well to baste my top and backing ... I let it dry overnight ... It has been suggested to me to use my serger on the cut edges of the backing ... I haven't tried this yet, but it reduces the amount of fluff flying around

Please, when you can, do a video on the specialty fabrics and their uses as quilt backing. I love the idea of using Minky or Cuddle on the back of a quilt. I've seen a video where the copious linting was dealt with by stretching a layer of cling film food wrapping on top and sewing through it, then removing that and discarding it along with the lint. Apparently it matters how you cut those fabrics as well. Seems it's better to use a utility type knife and slice through the back instead of cutting down into the pile from the front as it makes less lint. Thanks for the great (as usual) video and all the information. I always feel so smart after watching! -Sally from MO

Would definitely appreciate a video or two on specialty fabric. I quilted with fleece many times on my domestic with no issues. Then I got my long-arm and I over tightened. It was not a great result.

I too wrestle with backs. I use up my scraps, making tumbler quilts, or Dresden quilts. Love your ideas also, always fun to learn something new.

My Guild recently hosted a quilt show ... one of the requirements to have your quilt judged was the backing could NOT be 2 pieces sewn together... It had to be 3 pieces of fabric sewn together in 2 seams ... while I was not planning on entering a quilt, this "rule" certainly made my decision easier... It is hard enough to do as it is lol! ... just wanted to share

Yes, please. I would love to see a video about using minky. I must make a baby quilt and am feeling challenged. Thank you for all of your inspirational videos. They have helped me use scraps and tackle fun projects.
