The bit about Bank secrecy is correct, but a bit outdated: the fabled Bank Secrecy of Switzerland is coming to an end (and has already ended in many contexts). Unsurprisingly, many of the companies and people who need secret money havens have moved away from Switzerland: Luxembourg for example has put bank secrecy in their constitution (which cannot be overruled by EU laws). Malta has similar conditions, and others.

Great video! I am a Swiss from the french speaking part (Canton: Valais/Wallis) living in America for a year. You are right, there is a bunch of awesome stuff in Swiss history that you didn't talk about but it would take long. I also love our government and the respect they have with each other (compare to a Trump vs Jeb Bush discussion that looks like a middle school fight haha but no offense, America is great! No doubt!). Anyways you are very well documented and it always feels good to see people say cool stuff about my country! That was a great work! Good job! Feel free to come and visit Switzerland we have any type of landscapes :) (except for ocean sans beaches and deserts haha) A lot of people in the comments fight or criticize every little detail, but I think it is important to tell when something is good, I know it takes courage and time to create a video like yours and I encourage you to keep up! Great job and see ya later!

Excellent video! For describing Switzerland's history and political system in a nutshell, you've done a great job. I like to think of our system as a representative democracy with some concepts of direct democracy mixed in: 90% of the time it works like most representative democracies, but if need arises, citizens can invoke some powerful instruments of direct democracy.

***** Nah, my family (great-great-great grandfather) emigrated to Brazil. My Father immigrated to the US. Back in Brazil, every August 1st they would have a "Switzerland day", where a big festival would be organized for Swiss heritage. I didn't go there much though, since it's in a very rural area, there's ticks in the grass and I got food poisoning from eating a Cervelat once. Avoided sausages for at least 3 years I think. Dunno about US, more of a Brazilian immigrant than a Swiss immigrant now...

We visited Switzerland back in September 2012 on our way back from Lake Garda. For two nights, we used an industrial area near Susten beside the River Rhone in the canton of Valais/Wallis as our base. We found the locals there, very friendly and accommodating, however, the tourist areas such as Zermatt and Gornagrat (about an hours drive away), mostly the people were polite but very aloof. Onto a different subject, a good effort with your video but there are inaccuracies. I understand that up to 70% of the Swiss speak an entirely different dialect of German than that spoken in the neighbouring country to the North and even within Switzerland, again different dialects of Schweizerdeutsch. As Liar Game Winner infers, many of the 70% are probably trilingual but hey ho, I am sure this individual will put me right in a very perdantic way if I am wrong. The pincipality that I can not be bothered to spell is to the East of Switzerland and Swiss German can be spoken as far South as the Matterhorn, along with the possibility of a minority over the Italian border. Generally, as I mentioned before, we found in the industrial areas, the people more welcoming than tourist areas. Does this mean that even in monetary Switzerland, trade unions exist? If we had more time, it would have been a pleasure to meet our Swiss counterparts in the trade union movement. Alan Brown from England.
@RainbowYak
@RainbowYak 8 жыл бұрын
+Alan Brown Yes, trade unions are in fact quite strong here (as they are in most central and northern European nations I'd argue). That is for example why we don't have a nationally instituted minimum wage of the kind that progressive Americans are currently fighting for. Instead, the trade unions have made bilateral agreements with the employers and employer-representatives of most trades. In these agreements, compromises are made between the unions and the employer representatives to ensure good wages, decent amounts of paid leave and generally appropriate workers' rights and working conditions while still making sure to keep the companies profitable and afloat. Though I am personally not against a government-lead, constitutional minimum wage, we have found this system to work quite well. As for your other statement about the friendliness/politeness, I would wholeheartedly agree with that. Generally speaking people in urban areas of Switzerland tend to be more obliging and friendly in my opinion (I live in a big city myself). Countryside folks can be rather... grumpy. It's not that they dislike you though, it's just sort of natural grumpiness haha ;-). I think it has something to do with the mountains. Both in Austria and Switzerland, the people living in the mountains or nearby are... well... a little "different" if you know what I mean ;-).

Unfortunatelly Switzerland has "become" very racist in the past couple of years, or the racism has shown more. If you are willing to addabt you might be welcome here if you are well educated and work in a high tech business. If not, bad luck. The politics has become more rude and less consent based. If you happen to redo this video: - Include the Battle of Marignano 1515. It's part of the reason for Switzerlands neutrality. - Explain more about the collaboration of Switzerland and Nazi Germany during the 2nd WW. And why you can't go up to any swiss guy today and tell him he's a nazi... - Include that due to the population growth we are having more and more initiatives and referendums on unimportant matters. This keeps the administration busy and is expensive. (We voted on whether we should saw off cows horns or forbid it) - Update your information about the Bank accounts. US-Citizens can't have a bank account in switzerland anymore! - Explain more about the influence of inflation in the EU to switzerland. (Trade becomes expensive)

Thank you very much for this great introduction of our country. You were right to point out the light and the shadow of our heritage. I also think that our direct democracy is awesome. I don't miss a single ballot. What you didn't mention was the ease in which people can exercise their right to vote. When I hear about the voter restriction laws in the USA....One more thing: By and large I find governmental institutions or government run corporations very efficient and customer friendly. I find that out government truly delivers a "service public" which is also seen as such by most (in fact very soon we will vote to strengthen this service). Funny enough, a politician like Bernie Sanders would be quite normal in Switzerland....a politician like Donald Trump, too, though.

Being swiss this is the thing I am the most proud of along with the direct democracy ! It seems very complicated to foreign people but it has been praised by many foreign head of state like the french president ( and believe France does not praise Switzerland easily ! P.S : Our democracy is so "direct" that one year ago we voted about wether the swiss air force should buy new jets; )

I thank you for your very interesting vid. It is amazing ... great job. I am Swiss and would correct you on two elements. Which IMO are important. The history of a bunch of farmers, going in revolution against Austria (the habsbourg) in 1292, that grew with other cantons joining them has been crucial. The governmental structure is so democratic because it was built bottom up !!! with direct democracy in mind. Unlike many other nations that had Kings and Queens and passed onto a "democracy" that still gave advantages to the upper classes. (understand that this equality not only makes that if the president makes a car accident with an illegal allien, and the president made a mistake ... he will pay ... it is a truly fair country where anyone has his chance). The huge mistake is that you cannot hide money here, not more than in many other countries. There are laws, they are very strict .... and disclosures about legal beneficiaries and provenance of money have become ridiculous. Not to be in confusion with a company that wants to establish its head office here, in which case they would pay local taxes on income which are lower than in many other countries. Then again .... they could go straight to true" tax heavens" ... . That is not something particular to Switzerland but you can go anywhere and establish your head office if you want optimize your taxes. The fact that Switzerland offers quality labor force probably helps in attracting "head offices" that look for a stable place with low taxes and good work force to be.

Missing and important is what changed in Switzerland following the Christian Crusades for plunder and property in the Middle East and other Muslim areas. When all those those people left to fightm, die and get injured, who was left behind to capitalize on business and especially, banking? How did the small center of power get that way? Why banking?

Great video, well researched! Although, you should have included the reputation of swiss mercenaries and their role as papal guard to drive home the "i-dont-want-to-fight-them"-factor. Edit edit: Our food and accomodations are pricey, but expensive electronics tend to be cheaper: PC hardware for example is cheaper than in germany, and that's absolute pricing, not relative to GDP. My 4090 was cheaper than in Germany or France despite my "relatively" higher purchasing power. Medical drugs on the other hand are disproportionally more expensive compared to neighbouring countries.

When mentioning the Protestant Reformation at 8:10 it is inappropriate to insert an image of Martin Luther, who was decidedly not Swiss. Switzerland engendered the two of the three seminal Reformation figures *Zwingli* and *Calvin,* but not *Luther,* who stemmed from Germany.

I think you should mention their language politics when it comes to the three legislative languages and the four national languages and how they tried to use High german but after the Nazis decided to not speak it, and the fact that during this time of Facism how romansch became an ofical language and so much more about the languages!

Okay, that is enough. Whenever I go to these videos I always see people in the comment section saying, “I am Swiss”, then continuing to state they are mad at the video for this, or that. I am from Switzerland, I live in Switzerland. I live in a German speaking Canton and region. Don’t say that Germans, French and Austrian Swiss are all together happily in, “Swiss” culture. That is false. We are heavily influenced by Germany, France and Italy depending on the region you are from. Fuck off with all these trolls just trying to troll people pretending to be Swiss. The only Swiss culture is banking and conformity 4life.

The only reason direct democracy works in Switzerland is because of the decentralization of powers, and hence the limited ability of one canton to impose rules and values upon another. The system works, but likely could not survive an absolute majority or dramatic demographic change opposed to its fundamental values.

The large size of Canada and the difficulty of assembling voters for 3 or 4 votes a year is a piss-poor argument against direct democracy for Canada. We are not living in the 19th century and our current form of democracy is democratic for a few moments once every 5 years. We don’t have democracy in Canada.

I don't think it is fair to say that 8.1 million people is not a lot when we actually have a population density much higher than a lot of countries (like the USA or France for exemple)

You made a great video about my home country. But I have somme comments and corrections what has direct democracy do with travel? in Switzerland you can vote in each City/Village. So you don't have to travel. Grambünden is called Graubünden, and Liechtenstein lies in the east not in the west. Your right about Kim Jong Ung. He went to school in Switzerland. But only becaus he was here with an fake passport. Also the bank secrecy is no more. Switzerland has agreed in 2014, to use the OECD regultion about automatic information exchange in tax matters.

i hope you don't take my coming gentle positive criticism too negatively but I think you are historically "chickening out" on simply dismissing Switzerland's old history. I think I get your argument but I really think perhaps you should do a video devoted to bringing out the old history of Switzerland. you know you can do it and it would be very interesting.
