Just got one. I'd usually prefer bigger dogs but doesn't fit where we are right now. So glad I made the choice. I'm a hard working family man but I have some mental health issues I don't want to go on about. I registered her as a service dog because I told my self I see all these people bringing their dogs managing the bar I'm at because they are bored and extra. (You know the ppl I mean). I'm actually able to use her like this tho as I tend to get manicy if I don't have much to do around the house when I'm off and I'm super anti social when I don't have to be in people mode. This well behaved youngly love dog has gone with me everywhere. I'm amazed at how good she is and I had no idea what a great addition not just for the family but myself selfishly is something I wasn't expecting.

When my husband was deployed overseas our pembroke named Einstein became my mental support animal. I took him everywhere with me, and a lot of times you get to go in places where they say "no pets allowed" because of how cute they are. The dogs are very attune to your emotions and they can give space or comfort depending on your mood.

1st, She wants to play first thing in the AM, then, she gets along with almost every other dog, she loves to run, full speed, right past me ! Has to be in the same room, all the time. Speaks on command, and is food motivated. She's a little aloof to strangers, maybe because she is a rescue ? She trains me well. She'll sit and look at me, then where I keep the treats, then back to me until, she gets a treat.

The corgi I live with is 1/4 Red Heeler. He’s definitely energetic, so I play with him often to get as much of it spent as possible. He’s very affectionate but also bossy. If you stop petting him he’ll be on you nudging your hand and wondering what you think you’re doing. He’s a huge chewer too. Goes through toys like crazy. I have had 5, 1988-2021. They are not for a novice owner. Before getting one research and spend time around a Corgi first. They come with a lot of pros but here are the cons. They shed not just some, but a huge amount year round, on your furniture, clothes, floor, car and in your food, a very good vacuum needed as well as change AC heat filters more often, might still have it clog your unit. They bark, a lot, at everything and nothing and their bark can be earsplitting and scare kids, they also "talk". They gain weight easily, good quality food in small amounts 2 times a day for adult( 2 and over). They do best with a yard, they are not a laid back breed at all, they are natural herders. They like to nip at ankles and chase especially kids, need training. When young, under 2-3, they can be very destructive if left alone too long, furniture, shoes, flooring, anywhere you sit or what you touch and wear is fair game for their teeth, they do not like being left alone too often. They are very smart and need an assertive, not mean, owner or they will train you. It is like this, you need to be the right owner for the Corgi, not the Corgi be the right breed for you.

@@darlenetutty772 Corgis are not for everyone, this is why a growing number are in shelters. They have natural herding instincts and all that goes with it. They are stubborn, very intelligent and can be a challenge to train, males can be more challenging, neutered ASAP. Corgis often need a job to do. They are not a breed that can be left alone for long especially if they are under 3 yo.

I have a 2.5 year old corgi, I've had her since she was 8 weeks old. Socialization is important, I think 8 weeks is early depending on where you live. I'd recommend 16-20 weeks depending on how bad parvo is in your area. Around the neighborhood is okay for the most part, but avoid big parks till they're fully vaccinated.

Any pup can get parvo, people walk it in on their shoes. No young pup should be exposed to any other strange dogs until it is fully vaccinated. Give their immune system time to become acclimated to your house first.

Dunno if it's a difference in countries, but at least in Sweden the Pembroke comes with stub tail, no tail or long tail. All are allowed, but they should always be bred with at least one parent being stub tail to preserve the trait. Having a long tail does not disqualify them from participating in dog shows for example. Got my corgi from a registered kennel and of his litter he was the only one with a long tail.

@dogjoy1
@dogjoy1 Жыл бұрын
Aw that's definitely a hard choice, especially if the kids have their eyes set on a certain breed. We like to say, give it a shot first with adopting, check out a few local shelters. Who knows, you just might find that special pup. If after doing that you don't find the one, then it's fair to look for a breeder. We absolutely love that you'll be hopefully getting a dog soon. =)

If you’re family is looking at getting a corgi, just know they can be a struggle with small children due to their herding drive & may nip & “bully” children if not taken close care through training, but to your question, as a corgi owner, this is gonna be A LOT of information, but it can be helpful even if you are looking at another breed. To start, I would be cautious of finding/adopting through an animal shelter, a full bred corgi is rare in community shelters but sadly these corgis typically are abandoned because they come from unethical breeders, like backyard breeders or puppy mills, ethical breeders and preservation breeders do not allow the owners to transfer or surrender ownership without coordination through them & will take their pups back or work with special corgi rescues to have them placed in new homes. If a pup is in a shelter and is from a quality breeder, it is very likely that the owner ignored this contracted obligation, didn’t care or did it to hide from the breeder that they took poor care of the dog. Regardless, most in shelters are there due to poor health, temperament issues &/or significant neglect caused behavioral problems… I am not saying corgis with these issues should never be adopted, only that significant caution & considerations should be made if you/your family cannot meet the needs that come with adopting them. A similar option to adopting from a community shelter is going through a corgi rescue program in your state (you can find one by googling your state + corgi rescue). These rescues responsibly rehome corgis and tend to have a few dogs of various ages available. They gain a full behavioral/personality understanding of the dogs, will fully health test/rehabilitate and stabilize, and will work with prospective owners to determine which dogs will fit best and offer their perspective on the needs of the dogs & like ethical and preservation breeders, are forever resources to owners. Final option is buying from a breeder. If you are going to buy be careful about buying from advertising on social media, most are elaborate scams with stolen puppy photos, and PLEASE do not buy from pet stores. Pet stores charge insane prices for puppy mill sourced dogs that will typically have very poor health and unpredictable temperaments. The breeders are focused on quantities not qualities, same with backyard breeders. Backyard breeders are people who breed for profit, do not have the knowledge or concern to breed safely, ethically or properly, will not consider the quality or health of the parents and will produce offspring that they will charge top breeder prices for but are not top breeder quality by any stretch. It may take time and research, but the best path is to find ethical and/or preservation breeders. These breeders do not over breed their mamas, they are educated and hold esteem in the breed clubs for litters that are free of genetic markers for high risk diseases (and enthusiastically provide records of all health testing), and pups that are most likely to conform to physical and behavioral breed standards. They do not breed often, so you will likely need to wait 6 months to a year, but DO NOT fall for deposits, “retainer fees” or “holding fees” for future litters - backyard breeders ask for these, not quality breeders. Quality breeders do not start the process of selling a puppy until after the litter is born, they may require a deposit to hold your claim to a puppy until the puppy is old enough to be separated from the mother (these breeders will never separate earlier than 8 or 9 weeks- some even waiting until 10-12 weeks), some may require prospective owners to go through an application process (infrequently requiring an application fee, and most will apply the fee to the overall cost of the puppy), and all quality breeders will have a contract with the owners to explain the expectations of the owning the puppy (usually dictating the rights to breeding, if they require spay/neuter, how they expect owners to handle situations like rehoming, notifying them of any chronic medical issues from allergies to diabetes etc and how they will notify you if a parent or littermate is diagnosed with a condition that may indicate your pup would be at risk, and/or other breeder specific conditions like requiring AKC registration, requiring proof of vet care or pet insurance, or transfer of microchipping info). I got my Pembroke Welsh Corgi from a preservation breeder- an ethical breeder who is dedicated to the meticulous process of breeding for the purpose of preserving the best qualities of the breed. My breeder required an application process, at no charge, we were told that if chosen, we would be given access to the breeder’s private group page for owners where we could interact with the owners of the puppies from past litters, see updates and announcements of expected litters & when those puppies would be available to purchase. Obviously we were chosen, and we waited about 4 months before the next litter was announced as available. We paid $1800, and got our girl when she was 10 weeks old. She came with her first 3 sets of shots, was microchipped and we received a full copy of her medical testing, vet records and AKC registration forms. Our contract requires us to provide proof of a maintained pet insurance policy and at least annual vet care, that intent or crisis/emergency/unintended events leading to breeding or rehoming is communicating to the breeder, and a few other things like notification of injury, illness or death. Honestly, this may seem like a lot of red tape to just get a puppy but it’s been worth it. At our girl’s 1 year wellness appointment, her lab tests showed elevated liver enzymes. We reached out to the breeder and our breeder PAID for the labs to be re-run, then PAID for a specific pre/post test to be run. The day of the appointment to review the results, the breeder drove over 2 hours to attend the appointment with us. She brought the medical records of our puppy’s parents and grandparents on both sides, and had contacted the owners of the littermates to collect general health information and had them also have liver enzyme testing and what the results were. Our girl has a liver condition that isn’t common for corgis, and although it can be hereditary, it can also just randomly occur in any dog during fetal development of the liver, which is the case with our girl. The breeder then split with us the cost of seeing a specialist and the imaging and biopsy done to confirm the specific diagnosis, and she was willing to help us with the cost of the surgery, but the type our pup has is inoperable. Since then, the breeder has stayed in contact, helped find resources to stabilize the condition with diet and medication, and has celebrated with us like a proud grandparent when labs showed we were successful. This is the difference that came from going through all the red tape that came with buying from a quality breeder… we didn’t just get a dog that is my best friend and an absolute treasure but we got an ally and resource in making sure that our dog has the best life possible.

Can you train them not to bark a lot?
@dogjoy1
@dogjoy1 10 ай бұрын
It'll take some perseverance but you can train them with a quiet command that will help mitigate barking. Here's a great article that covers some of the best ways to go about it. www.hepper.com/how-to-train-a-corgi-not-to-bark/

Does ur corgi pant and breathe hard
@dogjoy1

Sometimes they can, especially when out exercising in the heat. Does yours pant and breathe hard when not exerting themself? If so you may want to talk to the vet just in case as it could be some underlying issue.

Facts aren’t right 😂 First of all the Pembroke can have a tail. In Europe they have a long tail because docking is forbidden. Some have a natural bobtail so the tail can be short. The picture of the Cardigan that you show was a pembroke😅 And the cardigan is longer then the Pembroke. If you make a information video makes the facts right🫣

All corgis are born with tails. A dog uses its tail to communicate and cuddle. You are mutilating your dog by chopping its tail off for human fashion.

1000% agreed, keep the tail! There’s no reason to do that to your dog! Thanks for giving our video a watch. We appreciate your comment too! ❤️

Corgi's originate from SWEDEN!!! They're herding dog and ALL corgis have tails, some people just decided to dock them. WE own a Corgi. My Wife family used to breed them.
