Here are a few tips if you are planning a trip to Finland with the VR Santa Claus express night train to Lapland. I stayed in the “first class” room on the second floor, and it included a bathroom!
The whole journey took about 11 hours from Tikkurila (close to Helsinki) to Rovaniemi.
Other than my panic when I entered the train, and forgot which coach I was in (and didn’t find the couch number on the wall), it was a pleasant ride.

Hi there guys, I’m from malaysia here, maybe planning to go to Rovaniemi for solo travelling since I haven’t been travel for 2 years. Few questions here: 1. May I ask that if I’m travelling to Finland with just cash without any debit or credit card , would it be ok? As I’m just a teenager, just travelling with cash , haven’t own a debit or credit card yet. 2. What type of buses u can get from Rovaniemi airport to Rovaniemi city ? Also I saw the Airport express buses has been temporarily halted their operations too . 3. If I on board the bus in Rovaniemi like example from Rovaniemi bus station to the Arctic glass igloo village bus station , can I pay with cash directly to the driver , without using any credit or debit card?

Hi, Can you write from whom did you get the card to the cabin? How often is the ticket checked and what time in the evening? Thank you for your help
@NorwegianRoamer
@NorwegianRoamer 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! The doors to the cabins are open, and the card key was hanging on the wall in the cabin. I believe they have a list of when/ at what stop you arrive to your cabin, they came as soon as the train left to check my ticket. The train don’t cross any borders so that was the only time they checked. I was quite tired so I slept through the night therefore I’m not sure how often they check the halls. I’m sure they patrol every once in a while or when new passengers arrive throughout the night. Hope it helped!

Just look if there are any younger Finns around and ask "Can someone translate to Finnish?". I am Finn born 1974 and am fluent with English. I think I am first generation that majority of people talks English. I travel in that train regularly to Oulu or Seinäjoki and would have been happy to translate as I think would have been many others..

Thanks for the video! I'm heading to finland in December. How far in advance do you think I will need to book a train ticket?
@NorwegianRoamer
@NorwegianRoamer 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you! I would order as early as possible. I took the train while the country was closed and only necessary travel was accepted, so there weren’t any travelers aboard and therefore I could order a week ahead. The winter season is the peak season, and the travel industry in Lapland are preparing to get a lot of travelers, so I’ll imagine that the train will get booked fast. It's also cheaper when order ahead of time. Hope you have a fun time in Finland!

I just happened to see your comment and thought I'd answer as I am a Finnish rail fan. As she mentioned, there are very many people traveling in winter time and especially in December as many people from Southern Finland want to spend their Christmas holidays in the north. If you are going to travel on the night trains, I would recommend booking the ticket as soon as possible. Especially the sleeping berths are in high demand and some departures around Christmas are already sold out. If you are going to book any tickets on daytime trains, there are tickets available only until 11 December. For the rest of December, tickets will be opened for sale today (in just one hour, so they are probably already available when you see my answer). It's always cheaper to book when there are many tickets still available, so if you go book today or in the upcoming days, you will probably find significantly cheaper tickets than usually.

@@thenomadicexperience That 10 h does not include the breaks. During the Winter time the actual travel time is even longer, because of the lower speed limits.

@@NorwegianRoamer USA just doesn't have trains like this, alas. Even the best Amtrak line just offers a big private cabin, a sink inside it, and that's about it. Maybe some adjustable AC. I meant to ask, is the shower timed, or can you take a good long shower if you want to? Some trains like this in Japan apparently limit the shower time to maybe 6 minutes, then you have to end the shower and push the self-cleaning cycle button and step out.

Yes I heard about this as well, it is really cool! From my understanding not all the trains to Rovaniemi are able to take vehicles, and there are only a few specific station where you can load and unload your vehicle from the train. It is possible to drive to Northern Finland as well :))

I can’t say that I remember any smoking room, but some of the stops are longer. You will have time to take a smoke at those stops. If I remember correctly the Vr app shows when the train have leaves from the different stations, or you can ask the conductor.

@@NorwegianRoamer It's not rude to ask. I mean, it's a lot ruder for someone to get upset by that kind of innocent question, if you ask me. If Swedish/Norwegian isn't possible, just switch to English. Not a problem for anyone. Om du rör dig på orter där vägskyltarna är på två språk, då bor det garanterat folk som talar svenska i trakten.

How cost travel from helsinki to lapland by santa trains 🚆 and what favorite hotel thank you
@NorwegianRoamer
@NorwegianRoamer 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! It depends on a what class you want to travel, I would recommend checking out vr.fi, there you can plot in the destination and class. I went for an internship in Rovaniemi, and rented an student apartment, and didn’t really stay at any hotels, just camping. If you are going in the winter I think the igloo once looks amazing, especially if you get to see the aurora. If you have children the Santa village have a hotel, but you have to book long in advance. Good luck!
