Love this unit. Battery life is crazy good and when paired with the app it works great. Another downside is that you cannot create a gps track other than the messenger points which you have to pay for on the cheaper plan. Not a big deal for me because I have a GPS watch and GAIA on the phone. Great review 👏

Hi, thanks for the info. It is hard to get a straight answer in Canada regarding SAR. From what I found there is no charge for SAR across Canada, BUT some municipalities have charged if they are sent out to rescue someone. So there is a chance of getting a bill.

You can have the minimum plan for most of the year and upgrade to the expedition plan for 30 days if you need it

Thanks for the helpful video! I've looked everywhere for an answer to this question, and still can't find anyone talking about it! Sometimes I trek with my wife, and sometimes one of us goes backpackin solo. Is there a way to unpair the inreach messenger from my phone and pair it with her phone instead so she can take it out when I'm not with her? Thanks in advance!

I am literally just looking for a way to get the OTP (one time password) more credit cards & banks are asking for just for simple purchases- I work & travel overseas most of the year & it is becoming a problem. Also my work is volunteer so paying for a Global phone plan is out of my reach although if something like this worked for example in the poorest countries in Asia & South America I would make the investment. Anyone have experience, advice with this?

If I send a message to someone do they receive it as a regular text message or do they need the Garmin app installed to receive the message?

they receive it as a regular text message from a randomly assigned phone number. So make sure they don't have unknown numbers blocked by default

Garmin discontinued support on phones and tablets for my InReach Mini. Am I supposed to throw it away? Backward compatibility should be the law, you jerks.

It has a battery, so it will not last a life time.

Lithium batteries can last between 3,000 and 5,000 partial cycles. So yeah, it will probably last a lifetime. A normal lithium battery will have 80% or more capacity left after around 1000 cycles. ((1000*15)/365= 41 years.) So your inReach will have 80% battery capacity and probably will work just fine after 41 years of constant use. So if you use it lets say 6 month of every year, it will last 82 years. The assumption of batteries not lasting, is from acid battetries, which does not last very long.

@@primal5435 it's marketing bullshit and missunderstood chemical processes in battery. Device definetely will not lasts lifeteme. If we assume that garmin as a company will be exsist after 40 years and if company will support such outdated technology, and if underlying Irridium carrier technology would even exists (where are pager companys now?) then we should talk about battery chemistry. Most of li-ion batterys that i have last about 10-15 years and no more. No matter how you use it! How do you think can we just go to garmin service and replace battery after 15+ years?

@@keefeere A Google search will confirm what I wrote above. Ofcouse other factors influence if it will last that long or not, but thats the same for every other product. Your personal experience with lithium batteries with other products does not change the fact that lithium batteries have around 1000 cycles today. I Think you might think of older lithium batteries that only had fx. 200 cycles.
