Processing wild clay that I foraged for in the woods to make pottery! In this video I show each step of my process and share a little bit about how I'm coping with winter too.
I'm Mutsa, I run a small business called the Kindred Workshop where I make and sell handcrafted pottery and jewellery in small batches.

This is only the second video from your channel that I have ever watched, and I am amazed that you know how to do things like forage wild berries that are actually edible or make beautiful vessels from wild clay. I feel completely inadequate when I see you do these things, but your videos are so well done and cozy that I subscribed. I cannot wait to see more. Thank you for sharing.

What clay! Such beautiful color it had in it's raw state I am absolutely mesmerized about the earth underneath us and the large variety it holds. I've been wanting to do this too for a long time, this summer perhaps I'll do it after seeing your super easy furnace that you can leave overnight like, aaa. genius. And oh, almost forgot, not only was the clay wonderful but your creation too, seemingly perfect for it's cause. Love the mountains on it, not too much, not too little just *chefs kiss*

Thanks for sharing this. My friends and I just collected a handful of wild clay and we’re excited to start working with it! This video was very insightful for my next steps. I live in Michigan and it’s so interesting how the earthenware here is grey/grayish-blue/grayish-green. Not a lot of iron in this clay resulting with a look not like the classic red or orange earthenware!

Hmmm, I use a lot more water, enough so that the sand and stones sink to the bottom. I pour off the liquid then I add a flocculant to settle the clay, and discard the water and other gunge. Then the rest of the process is very similar.

You could crush the dried clay to powder and sieve it before you add water. You'd need to wear a protective mask, but it's much less messy.

Hi there, thanks so much for sharing this! We have had some massive flooding and slips here in NZ and there is literally wild clay everywhere that has been cleared from roads and properties. I'm keen to have a go at processing some of it. How did your firing tests go? Any chance you could share about the Temps you used? Cheers, Lexi
