In Chinese fantasy novels it is commonplace to have the random old person have immense power. The motif extends throughout the entire culture. Think steven chow's axe gang movie, with the hidden grandmasters among the residents. It's the whole humble/humility thing. The concept is referred to as 藏龙卧虎(Hidden dragon crouching tiger), strong humble people who lay low until the critical moment. Probably the most famous example of this among chinese people is a character named "扫地僧"(Sweeping monk) who appears for less than 5 pages in a 1.5 million word meganovel. He's basically a janitor at shaolin temple who K.O.s the two strongest established characters simultaneously in one move, putting them in near-death state without completely killing them. And he did it to give them perspective and help them forget their past grievances. After the two experienced near-death they lost interest in their ambitions and revenge plots, and became monks.
