great review with tons of information!!I Yeah, I have all my heads linked to reactive loads (palmer) and then use IRs..... Can you use the FX send as a "preamp out"?
@MadManMusic
@MadManMusic 5 ай бұрын
You will need to send a signal to the “Return” in order to complete the signal chain.. But you could totally use an ABY Splitter at the end of your chain coning out of the FX Loop Send just before the Return! This way one side is just Preamp and the other goes back into the amp and through the power section. I hope that helps! 🤘🏼😜

I have the Mk 1 LBX, I got a 13 month old and a new born on the way, I use to play it through a Hughes & Kettner TM112 cab loaded with a V30 and thought it was meh because I could never get past or close to 1 like you said, I was exactly that. Now though I play it exclusively through a Torpedo Captor X with cans and OMG its a fucking brutal amp! Like holy shit!

Oh for sure! Now that I think of it, I’m actually surprised that EVH didnt put the Head Phone option on these heads... the 50 watt has it and you’d pretty much Never use it on that head... but you might on an LBX... 🤔 Either way, nothing beats the sound of an isolated IR in Cans. @MadManMusic Great video, I have a few quesions: 1)Have you toured with this head and could it keep up to a drum kit volume wise? 2)If so, did you use a 4x12 cab mic'd through a PA? 3)Is it loud enough without going through PA just jamming in a rehearsal space?
@MadManMusic
@MadManMusic Жыл бұрын
Hey! Great questions! I have tour with it. I used it through a 4x12 Cab and it was Mic’d. But I play in a Hardcore Metal Band (Pro-Pain) and we play with a VERY Loud Stage Volume. If you’re playing REALLY Heavy stuff like I do, I’d recommend the 50 Watt. Thats what I use and it’s perfect. The 15 Watt starts to get to that breaking point a little too soon when being pushed hard. However if you’re not playing such Volume Demanding Music the 15 Watt will TOTALLY work. Its LOUD on its own. I just needed it to stay super tight and it pulled it off but I didn’t want to push it. Interesting Side Note, I once played a large festival along side Limp Bizkit and Wes totally uses these 15 Watters with a 4x12 Cab! Hope that helps! 🤘🏼😜

A had to send two of theses back to Sweetwater because of that hsss, the second one I received didn’t hsss for the first month though. Great video! I have the same exact head and the only thing I don’t like is the effects loop. I have a Fortin Zuul and a Tc electronics delay and when I have them on it raises my volume and makes it extremely bright. So I keep the settings pretty bass heavy with little treble and prescence. You have the same issue?
@MadManMusic
@MadManMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Hey dude! I also found that the LBX was a fairly bright sounding amp all around. However, I didnt experience any added high end from adding things in the FX Loop... that might be caused but the effect your using themselves. The thing about EVH amps is that their Loops are run in “Series” which means its always on (specifically on the LBX models as there is no FX Loop Switch) so you shouldnt hear a difference when adding anything to the loop.. know what I mean?? Perhaps the delay is adding the brightness?? You only hear it when the pedals are activated right? So if they are connected to the amp through the loop but turned off you dont hear this added brightness?? Let me know! 🤘🏼😜

Great review. I'm thinking of downsizing from a Blackstar 60w combo to this EVH plus a 2x12 cab. Would this setup good for small punk gigs? I'm worried about missing the extra wattage and volume, however I think the EVH may make up for it in gain, as I think the Blackstar OD1 channel could use some oomph from a TS pedal.
@MadManMusic
@MadManMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Thanks!! This lil guy is LOUD. But it will begin to break up a bit sooner once you start pushing it. If you’re playing venues with decent PA Equipment you’ll be fine! But just note that without that, you might be pushing it a bit. There are ways to make up for this to get every inch of volume out of it, simply turn the gain down a bit, overdrives could also help but use it with the Gain off the tone at noon and the volume between 50-100%. This will act as a little crunch boost. Luckily you’re getting all that EVH Tone in a tiny package! AND the price is really quite reasonable. Especially in the second hand market. Try it out and let us know how it worked for you!! 🤘🏼😜

@MadManMusic
@MadManMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Thanks! Yes, when I would switch to lower power it would recycle the transformers. I think this is a "Safety Precaution" of sorts because When you're already rockin as 15 Watts and you drop it down while the Power is Engaged.... It will have too much power. So the amp has to actually dump the power before reset at the 3/4 power setting................ ...........Or I have no clue what I'm talking about. lol But yes, Mine did that also. 🤘🏼😜

I have the 100 watt head. I play in a basement and turn it up loud, but not even I can handle it past like 2/10 on the volume dial. You have the Bugera Attenuator recommended in the video info. I've been lookin at that for a while now, but I'm not sure. If I only plan to play through a cab, do you think it would be reliable as a good attenuator? I've heard a lot of good reviews, but also some negative ones.
@MadManMusic
@MadManMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Hey dude! I actually use a Harley Benton Attenuator because its what’s available for me here in Europe. But its basically the exact same thing. And both are rated to handle up to 100 watt heads. I use mine with the 15 watt LBX and the 50 watt Mk2 and it is awesome! 100 watts is supposedly right at that threshold. But heres what I would suggest; the Power Soak is only affected by the information thats going into it, so set the amp to 2 or so like you have it and try not to push it much louder and I’m sure you’ll be fine. If you crank to 4+ or something you might flood the soak with too much and I think then it could have trouble. But at lower volumes you’ll only see the Heat Sink Fan operate when you palm mute. I have my amp set just as loud as I would have it when i play live (around 3) and the Attenuator handles it no problem. And at that price point its worth starting there, if you see the fan working way too hard all the time then you’ll know that it might not be tough enough. But I doubt you’ll have any issues. If you decide to get one be sure to let us know how it worked out for you!! Thanks for the question! 🤘🏼😜

I used the Bugera Attenuator with it and it has a little bit of tone suck IMHO. I didn't care for it.
@MadManMusic
@MadManMusic 3 жыл бұрын
@@nomadronin7361 It is definitely possible for an attenuator to Suck some Tone but it shouldn't be all that noticeable if you're settings are in a reasonable place. Where do you have your Volume set to? I generally keep mine exactly where I would have it when I am playing the amp loudly. So for me thats right around 2.5-3 on the Volume any more than that and the amp itself will begin to "Clip" and square off... resulting in something similar to Tone Suck.. so in this example it wouldn't be the Attenuator. I mention this because its easy to CRANK this little thing. But really a little High End roll off wouldn't be a bad thing because the LBX has a lot of Presence. Thanks for the comment! 🤘🏼😜

Could you put a noise gate in the FX loop to help with the tube buzz?
@MadManMusic
@MadManMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Of course! In my “big rig” that I use here on KZfaq a lot I have a Boss NS2 In the beginning of my signal chain and I use the Line 6 HX Effects with the 4CM and have a Noise Gate as the first effect in the loop position. Remember to treat then separately. The threshold for the First Gate will be much higher than the one in the loop. The loop should be fairly subtle as to not choke your sustain. I hope that helps! 🤘🏼😜

Awesome! Welcome! With Pro-Pain, I use the Blue Channel with an OverDrive also. Its a little less noisy, much more focused and articulates the way I need it. You could use a Noise Gate in the Effects Loop. That would help cut the amp and the overdrive noise. Ole BOSS NS2’s also work both in front and in the loop simultaneously. If you have one and noticed it has a “send and return” as well as an “Input and output”. In and out are guitar, ns2, od, amp. And the send and return run in the loop. Then the gate will be applied to the effects loop signal but triggered by clean the signal coming from your guitar. Probably the most effective way to use it. Or just use 2 gates. One pre and one post. Hope that helps! 🤘🏼😜

@@MadManMusic Oh wow, thanks for the write-up! Yeah, I'm thinking I might make the LBX2 my 3rd amp for recording. I have a Marshall JVM 410 head that was my main gigging head for a decade, a Mesa Boogie Mark V 25 watt, and I think adding the LBX will basically cover any sort of hard rock/metal tone I could want (and the JVM has great clean and classic-rock style crunch channels for not-rock music) to record with, using one of those 3 amps. I don't need silly high-watt amps, and like you said in the video, you'll just get your cabinet mic'd (or Torpedo Captor'd or the Radial box on the low cost side of things) anyway at a gig. I can't seem to get the digital stuff (besides amp sims that mimic the face of the amp being replicated like N-DSP and ML Sound Lab does) cause my eyes glaze over trying to tweak tone via computer menus. Guess I've played too many gigs with backlines/used someone else's amp to record and am too used to taking 3 minutes tops to dial in tones I can use, haha

It depends on what you need. Firstly, EVH and Peavey 5150’s sound noticeably different. EVH amps sound a but smoother and less harsh in the high end (not by a whole lot but its there). The LBX MK1 is the Blue and Red Channel.. so its a Rhythm and a Lead.. that may not be the best as your only option.. for a Clean / Dirty Amp i would recommend the MK2. I hope that helps! 🤘🏼😜

Tube Amps are generally about Twice as Loud as Solid States, so 15 Watt Tube is loud.......I had a 5 watt Tube, and was TOO loud for my bedroom, I actually had to get a 1 watt, lol.

@94SexyStang So right. But for me, this LBX seemed to really work well and not become overly compressed when you really pushed it. I regret that I had to part ways with it. 😞 🤘🏼😜

@MadManMusic
@MadManMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah.. a little combo version of this amo would be nice. They have a 50 watt combo and I believe the new “Iconic” series has some lower wattage options also. Might be worth a look! 🤘🏼😜

if I have a 4x12 with the lbx-s, how loud can I go?
@MadManMusic
@MadManMusic 2 жыл бұрын
You’d be able to play over a live drummer. But you would be pushing it to its feasible limits. If you need louder I would suggest the 50 watt with the 4x12. 🤘🏼😜

Yes it's small but what about the big quad box. So what u mean take up no space
@MadManMusic
@MadManMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Im not sure I understand your question/comment. The amp works fairly well with a 4x12 box. Its obviously not as loud as higher wattage amps but its enough in most cases. And it also works great with a small 1x12 cabinet. So it can be very compact in your living space. 🤘🏼😜

@MadManMusic
@MadManMusic Жыл бұрын
Great question! Clean Tones will be tough on this model. Because it’s the Crunch and Lead Channels of the larger EVH Amps. The MK 2 might be the better option for you! Its the Green (clean) and Blue (Crunch) Channels. I hope that helps! 🤘🏼😜

If you mean, does it have a “Direct to FOH Output” than unfortunately no. It still requires a cabinet and a microphone. If you mean is it loud enough not to be mic’d thats a whole other topic. Its loud but if you’re in a very loud band it may struggle. 🤘🏼😜

It is nothing like the Fender Twin. Its a pocket sized metal machine. And on top its roadworthy. I wouldn’t call it a Toy, I‘ve toured with this amp and it holds up for what it is. Its just a smaller option of its bigger brothers with the same huge heavy tone. 🤘🏼😜

I have one and i agree with you. When you play, volume on 2 with a 412 V30 straight cab it’s just too much loud it’s insane. About the high end… it’s 5153 issue. It’s really bright specially with a slant cab.
@MadManMusic
@MadManMusic 3 жыл бұрын
5150’s in general tend to be a bit heavy in the high end. EVH has done a much better job with it than Peavey had. But the LBX, as opposed to any of the other EVH 5153s, has an excessive amount of Presence. Likely due to the EL84s. But hands down, you wont find a better sounding Lunchbox Head! 🤘🏼😜
