Rotondo made headlines around the world this month when his parents went to court to evict him from the family home. Question: what if Parents on a pension and Child (and or young adult) who has been on a disability support pension since they were 22 (now 29) , for Tinnitus, Social Anxiety, depression, and Fibromyalgia Syndrome, can't work but still helps out around the house whenever possible with rent, food, electricity and water bill and general chores whenever necessary... Is the child / young adult still a mooch then? or is it a close family that helps one another out?

I was in a situation in February this year where my roommate abandoned me and my 2 dogs without a word and even cut the power off. I had to track down the landlord who lives out of state only to find out she had no idea who I was and wanted me out too and roomie stole $150 of rent money when he left. I had to live with my grandma and helped clean up after myself, my dogs, and when I offered to help with her expenses she said if I wanted to help with electric I could, so I did. I saved every paycheck (minus monthly expenses outside of rent) and after 5 months of staying with her, getting scammed out of $300 that was almost $1200 trying to move into an apartment, and getting my phone stolen and having to replace that, I finally moved into a new apartment and bought furniture. It's nothing super big, but it's remodeled and affordable for me and my huskies. So seeing this where a 30yo man (I was 24, then 25 in May) take advantage of his parents like this for 8 years and make no effort to live on his own boils my blood. If I were his parents I'd disown him in the process. Sorry you lost your job, but that's no excuse to mooch off your own family for nearly a decade.

This is the end result of bad parenting. After all, no loving parent would sit idly by for eight long years while their kids are in full derailment, and then to complain about their own kids lack of self responsibility, all the while enabling them at the same time.

Exactly. What he needs is psychological help, and most importantly, love. It's clear his parents never provided a healthy and positive environment for him to grow and mature into an adult in. They should be putting in now the work they missed when he was younger, and doing what they need to to parent him into good health and teach him wisdom. Rather than putting all their energy into getting him kicked out on the street

Christine Buckingham yes I agree. I find it ridiculously sad that types like him want to have fun playing the adult, like the act of making a child yet aren't grown up enough to take care of them in anyway, which makes the tax payers the ones holding that responsibility. His parents let him by with this behavior far too long. I know as a parent I never want my kids hungry, homeless or in need but we have always taught them as young adults, they also have to help themselves. If it came down to my kids needing a home our door is always open but it's not for a free ride. They would be required to work and pay us towards living expenses. he just took advantage of them in the worst way and I think what bothered me most of anything this guy said was when asked if he would have any contact with them after they evicted him and he said no not ever. I can't imagine my kids ever being So childish and selfish as to ever do their dad and I that way but then we have instilled respect, love, boundaries , pushed them to be independent and to know how to treat others. I can't say it's all the parents fault as they may have done this as well but he just was a lazy pos all his life. I just pray they are finally able to have peace and enjoying living their retirement years as they had always planned now that he's out.

I wonder if people knew his entire backstory, if they'd still be so inclined to laugh and call him a loser. Though he's a full grown man and it's past time he take responsibility for himself, it seems some people don't connect the dots and consider why some adults end up this way--clingy and still dependent on their parents. These situations tend to be complex and fly right over the heads of those that had healthier...or maybe just very different situations with their own parents/family.

Regardless of any situation, a grown man/woman should strive to become independent of parents. The only support that I believe a parent should never cease to provide to his/her offspring is love, emotional support, guidance in life, and the occasional babysitting of grandchildren. Other than that, get the f$%k out of the house.

There are many other cases you are just pretty ignorant to here. What is the parents are the ones unable to live themselves due to complications health, etc? What if the child is the one disabled? Its kinda stupid to assume EVERYONE in life shares the same experience and to assume EVERYONE should have those same feelings. And lol in many different countries there are quite a few differences on how that situation is handled. Next time maybe try a bit more of an open mindes approach... There's a big difference between being a parent and a provider. A provider will only give you the basics to keep you alive. A parent will keep you alive, plus give you the discipline and structure needed to equip yourself for the outside world. This guy clearly had providers in his life. I don’t get what all the toxic comments against this person, because i knew most college students were fully supported by the parents. I was the rare case that didn’t, in my group. Theres no need to judge this man, none of you know him personally, the only people entitled to criticize him are his parents, because they actually pay his bills. You should all also remember ,there was this little thing called the great recession which pretty much destroyed millions of peoples lives. And employers are still taking advantage of this post great recession atmosphere. There are many professionals out there working for an employer, carefully disguised under one job title. Being worked to death. But that is another story. As it says in the bible let the first person who is innocent throw the first stone.

I can honestly say I feel for this man, because I’ve been in the same situation in my twenties where I had to live at home for while because I had a job that didn’t pay a wage high enough to live on my own. It took year plus for me to save enough money to be able to move out on my own. It is true that he didn’t have a job and his parents were right to ask him to leave, but in other countries around the world living at home as an adult with parents is a very common practice and not frowned upon. Believe it or not, not everyone can afford their own apartment, even if they do work at a full time job. People don’t understand the struggles that young people go through in today’s time. Even if you have a job, it is so hard to find one that pays enough to accommodate the rising costs of housing, education and health care. Many people are paying mortgage sized student loans and rents for tiny flats that are what used to be what a house used to cost. If you’re not experiencing it, you haven’t understood it. Hopefully he’ll get a job and find a roof over his head soon.

The point of growing up is to procreate insofar as evolution. And he did that. Anything else is a cultural choice. Plenty of people keep the clan together for the point of looking out for the elderly and instilling family wisdom on the young, guiding the young adults in their new found responsibilities. YOUR way commonly ends up in an elderly facility (if you have the $$$) or with annoyed middle aged kids arguing who has to take you in (fast forward 20yrs, they end up the elderly hot potato). I'm not saying many detached western elderly don't die happy, but your chances are high you'll end up a burden. I'm also not saying this 30yr old had the intention of caring for his parents. My point is, you don't speak for the world and your way is a niche, not a human norm to scream in disgust others don't do how you do.

This guy has no idea how great it is to be able to be on his own. I'm 48 and have to live at my mother's to take care of her. What was supposed to be a few months rehab has turned into a 8 year loss of my income and life. Even if I were to calaculate the loss of income at minimum wage it's over $140 grand. I feel like I'm in prison. No rest home will take her if she does not want to go. I miss my own TV, being able to control the heat an AC. I miss just having my own life. This guy has no idea what being free is. Yeah it's hard out in the real world. But to come home to your own home and not have to put up with old people problems when you are not yet old is what life is about.

I now understand why so many younger girls are hitting on older guys. When a kid half my age tried to hit on me, I laughed out loud and walked away, but now I get it. Talk about slim pickin's...Worst part is that he has a son! My dad worked one full time job and two part time jobs to take care of his wife and kids, and I have a full time job and my own side-hustle, so I can't imagine having a father like this ...uh...male. I would love to have seen this case on Judge Judy. And i wonder if that call was his service provider telling him that his parents stopped paying the cell phone bill.

This person should be grateful that at least he is living in New York State. I'm desperately trying to live in NYC but gentrification has basically banished me from Manhattan and Brooklyn. I may be able to find a studio in Queens, long Island, Bronx, or Staten Island but it won't have the same prestige as Manhattan's Upper West Side. Public housing is great but it may take 30 years to get in. The bottom line is that there is not enough affordable housing in the city. Until housing becomes more accessible you're going to have more guys and gals living at home like this guy in upstate NY.

I don't get it. When I was 18 I literally fled from my parent's home. I didn't like their rules, etc. True, I went off to the university, but I wanted my own place. The only thing I asked was if I could store some stuff until I had a more permanent place. None of this was done because of bad feelings or rancor; I just wanted my freedom. I went to the university, worked and now, some fifty years later, own a small farm near the Rockies free and clear. I know it's harder now, but still....

I think this guy has Asperger’s or some other Autism Spectrum Disorder. He needs to live in a ‘group home’ with other disabled people, and receive assistance from a vocational rehabilitation specialist. I honestly think this man is going to end up ‘homeless’. You can’t treat people with ASDs the same way you treat neuro-typicals. What a sad story. 🙁

Scorch1028 Unfortunately, just because you “think” something is wrong with him, doesn’t make anything wrong with him. My brother has aspbergers and although everyone is different, nothing seems wrong with this dude. He seems shy just because he’s been living at home his entire life and probably has no socialization skills because he doesn’t even have a job. Who’s he gonna talk to? And also, I’m SURE the parents would have gotten him tested. If they loved him enough to allow him to live like this for this long, I’m sure they’ve considered this as a possibility. Even my brother is capable of having a job and this guy communicates a lot better than him.

Alice Clanton Earlier today, I found out that Michael Rotondo was diagnosed with ‘paranoid schizophrenia.’ He denies having this condition, but who is he to argue with the psychiatrist who diagnosed him? It’s possible for schizophrenia to mask an ASD, as it is considered to be ‘more serious’. I think that Mr. Rotondo needs to spend time in a psychiatric facility where he can receive proper care. I understand why his parents wanted him to move out, but he has serious problems. Simply making him ‘move out’ is inhumane.

He had some pretty good paychecks at that time, but hardly ever invested into the expenses of living at home. Drinking at the bar EVERYDAY after work & on the weekends. Purchasing the best seats at the Lakers games. Sitting right behind the dugout in the L.A. Angels stadium. Kings hockey games.. you name it! Every sport event imaginable. He was still being irresponsible even if he had a job while surviving off of mommy's food, and living in a home with already paid utilities & property taxes .. smh
