The bigger problem is the aftermath once you get in a better situation. The eviction sits on public record to haunt you and discredit you for years!!! I feel like if you were evicted due to hardship then the record should be removed once payment is satisfied. Why keep it public??

Exactly, and what is even worst is how rental properties will LIE how much is owed, cause you cannot call the courthouse and satisfy the payment. Just speaking from experience courtesy of Weinstein Properties. They DO NOT want debts satisfied and I wonder who is getting paid, other than attorneys and the court system, to uphold these laws.

It does get removed most states do allow it to take 10 years though some just seven but I do see your point. People do fall upon hard times but it's the worthless ones that get evicted several times a year that really ruins it for everyone.

@@jonathangray2266 I believe it should be immediate or at least by the end of the calendar year that the balance is paid in full. Why should folks have to carry the burden of an eviction so long? 10 or 7 years is a ridiculously long time for an eviction. But guess where good end up when they can't get housing? Shelters or the streets and that's an even bigger problem. It's why people feel the system is rigged.

It gets bad in every city that becomes more popular. The closer you are to the center of the city the closer you are to being priced out of your home. Same goes for me. Just a fact of life. The higher wages go up the higher the prices of things will follow. Big stores like Walmart and Target can offset increases to minimum wages spread out over many stores, spread out all over the country, but smaller regional and locally owned businesses like grocery stores and gas stations can't handle those increases. That's why Target and Walmart was first to say we will raise our rates to $15 an hour no questions asked, because with that they knew they will only get larger, as smaller regional and local companies collapse under the weight of a high minimum wage. So when you demand a higher and higher wage don't complain about the Walmart and Amazons of the world, because you're creating an environment that will leave us with only them left. Minimum wage was never intended to be a living wage, it was intended to be a starting point. but the higher the minimum wage goes there will be no room for advancement or pay increases and wages will become stagnant over time. Here in Illinois our minimum wage has increased from $9.25 in 2020 to $12 in 2022 and $13 in 2023, but it hasn't made the job market better, in fact it has made it worse. More employers are only looking for part time workers and with that they are only using them when they need them, and sending them home when they don't. More people are working alone and if it is a small business they are running it by themselves. Even doctors offices and hair salons are working without reception staff opting to hire a offsite call center to answer the phone and make appointments in other states with lower wages or using automated kiosks to check in. Thousands of businesses and people have left the state, 50,000 people just last year and the state is serious financial trouble and we are left with some of the highest taxes in the country, so don't expect minimum wage to fix anything, if anything it has made everything substantially worse.

A bit late to this Dana, but there’s not too many places in the country w any sort of job market for cheaper rents prices. There’s certainly lows (places in Arkansas and Montana come to mind), there’s just no incentive to move there w a limited job market, little to do socially, and being thousands of miles from family. Obviously there’s closer examples like farmville or orange or south hill, but it’s the same story. Pretty scary stuff tbh, I kinda envy the older folks that were already established into a career and housing before the pandemic. Two points: 1. It's a generational wealth thing. It's a cultural thing. Black people live in the present and do not understand the ramifications of credit, spending and saving. Generation to generation has gone through the cycle of teen births and reliance on the government. No one gets ahead like that. Even in times of plenty, the wealth is rarely saved and passed on to the next generation to give them an advantage. Until you add knowledge and understanding, you are going to continue to see this, especially amongst Black folks. 2. If you are facing eviction, try to settle with your landlord before Court. Agree to leave by a certain date in exchange for forgiveness of the arrears. If you owe a few thousand, most landlords will jump at the opportunity to waive past rent they know they have no chance of getting in exchange for you agreeing to leave. The only drawback is you MUST leave or you'll owe the money and go straight onto the eviction list. This is a way to avoid having the back rent hanging over you and the eviction on your credit.

Time is the one thing nobody can replace, if an employer has an employee working full time (that’s 8-12 hours, sometimes more), and taking up all their daylight hours that they could be doing something else, they need to pay them like their time is worth it. Acting like there’s not wide swaths of the country with nothing but blue collar, low wage work available. Your perspective on the world is all screwed up, there is no job set aside for a particular group of people, sayin that low wage jobs are “for teenagers and immigrants” is just dumb as hell. If they’re qualified, they’re qualified. That’s all that should matter.

This is so unfortunate and I believe it's because the eviction process is MUCH more rapid in RVA than it is in many cities. I have a family friend who didn't pay her rent for a year in NYC (prior to the pandemic) because she didn't feel like it and knew the laws. She makes GOOD money and so right before she was to get her notice, she went ahead and paid the back rent. I've heard that in RVA who if you miss a month or two, your landlord can get you evicted. Honestly, with the way rent is going up, people are much better off just buying property. I pay half the amount in mortgage than a friend of mine is paying in rent and I have more than 3 times the square footage and live in a nice, safe, part of the county It's sad, but I feel like in situations where you have dang near a whole apartment complex being evicted...I'm sure EVERYONE isn't the problem. I would like to see more neighbors in these apartment complex's band together and buy houses. I was watching a news segment about how 3 single mothers went in on a house because apartment living was getting so expensive. They bought a 3 level house and made each level an apartment (each level had a master, full kitchen, and I think at least 1 or 2 bedrooms in addition to the master) and split the bills 3 ways. In the end, everyone came out spending less than what they had living alone and there was also always someone around to chaperone the children when necessary.

It breaks my heart so bad, and why do Bill Gates, Ophrah, and other celebrities in this country not use their resources to help this country instead of all the foreign countries when so many are hurting right here in their back door. Most of us have had to live with family to get back on our feet again but even while doing so, it's not free. It's to help one another, and lighten the expenses until one is well enough to be on their feet again. All of the commenters here that think the landlord didn't work with them should allow these folks to come live with them or perhaps stay in a home of theirs where they have a mortgage to pay on that rental property each month rent free. I doubt they will ever understand until someone steals from their livelihood.

If you choose to throw your money away to landlords, that's on you. I chose to buy a used mobile home when I was 18 y/o. I paid cash for a used mobile home. I'm 61y/o now and still live in that same mobile home. I have lived rent free over for 40 years now. I have always kept the maintenance up on it and it is still great shape. Most renters sign the agreement without reading it. Many of them don't understand what they've read. If you're gotten an eviction notice it's because you've violated the terms of the lease/rental agreement. Of course if you don't know what you've signed then you wouldn't understand why you've been evicted. You and the landlord still have to go to court so you both can present your side of the story. If you cannot pay why would you think you can keep living in the apartment or house? Nothing is free. If you approach your landlord and explain your situation they may work out a payment plan. At some point you're gonna have to get caught up. I remember working three jobs so I wouldn't lose my home. Not everyone will do what it takes. So don't think your eviction is because your landlord is being mean. if you don't pay the rent he cannot make payment on the house or apartment building. Then he will get a similar notice from the bank and he can lose the property they same way your getting evicted.

If it happened to me I would say well I didn't ever get a date no one ever told me. These are desperate people by the time this happens I would imagine. The only thing is they all have phones and wigs and nails, eating out? Come on I gave up my cell phone and cable TV and I can't afford to eat out any more even at Mc Dobalds so I could pay my mortgage. All that crap means nothing if you don't have a roof over your head.
