My favorite scene was that primal scream that seemed to last ten seconds. Everything about it was fantastic, the sound in the theater itself, the bathtub water boiling, the mirror cracking, the kids covering their ears, the neighbors hearing the yell, and even the plant next to the mirror shaking. It''s the dead have arrived scene, telling the audience here I am and here we go. Loved it!

“Youll be a good mother some day…youre good at lying to kids” is a killer line too. I think my favorite part of this movie is how they brought back the way the Deadites play with their food. There wasnt much of that in the 2013 version, and I think it changes the texture. The Deadites in 2013 would say messed up things, sure, but it was messed up stuff to say to any character. The Deadites in this movie say and do specific things that get into specific characters heads. Example: The reason that parasite line hits so hard is twofold…1) its such a hooooooorrrible thing to hear your mother say to you, but more importantly 2) It was pretty subtle, but they did lay down the groundwork that the kids actually felt like they were a burden. Hearing the Deadite version call back to that is so pointed and, like, ouch. It’s actually pretty commendable how much groundwork they were able to establish in such a short period of time. We spend, what, 15 minutes with the family as normal people? And there are callbacks. The script is SO lean. ……aside from the stupid wraparound….

@@stevemuzak8526 thats kinda what im worried about. The way I read it….thatd mean the implication is that now Its Out And Its Gonna Get Everyone? That would turn it into a giant world, and ultimately make it just another Zed-Word movie. Evil Dead works best because of the confines, you know? Besides that, in much the same way 28 Days Later put a spin on the Zed-Word movie by making them FAST (i know it wasnt the first to do so, but it was the breakout), the Deadites biggest way to distinguish themselves from Romero-style Zed-words is, in my opinion, that they talk. Not only that, but they have almost-prescient levels of insight. Especially since they appear to retain the memories of the previous lives and can mess with people psychologically based on that. The people closest to you can say the most horrible things to you. That doesnt work if its a worldwide thing. You need to spend some time with the characters to learn about them so that youll know why whatever Deadite X says to them is so messed up. Cf the stuff they say about pregnancy and motherhood in this movie. Its a Miggs vs. Lecter thing, if you can dig. Though if they go the other route and stick with the cabin….that triangle shaped cabin by the lake is a pretty cool setting for an old school Evil Dead … the lake alone could be cool. I dunno, but I feel like its in good hands!

@@CoolAsianGuy this was months ago but i stand by it. Its a great line. LINE! LINE! People in movies dont talk like people in real life and they say clever things we wished we thought of. I still think it’s a cool line? You dont? Idk, I’ve provided the reasoning behind an alternate perspective which you can accept or reject. I am willing to hear you out for reasonable discussion, and actually legitimately interested because theres a whole other side of the argument I thought about and fell to one side. It spreads thru al Evil Dead stuff and is an interesting theory with branches that vary based on a number of factors, both in universe and meta. Buuutt…..If youre juat a contrarian or a troll, idk, im too old and youre not good at it. Lets have a discussion or leave this creator’s comment section alone, eh?

Great in-depth review as always! Evil Dead is in competition with Child’s Play as my favorite horror franchise. It is one of the few franchises I’m a fan of that I consider to be a “perfect franchise”, and by that I mean that from its inception in 1981 with the original film to now in 2023, this franchise has always maintained a consistent level of quality with each new entry, and I feel that’s largely because the same general creative team has been onboard throughout the entire franchises history, while also simultaneously finding NEW talent in the industry like Lee Cronin to helm these projects. I thought Evil Dead Rise was an excellent film, and I hope we eventually see an Evil Dead Rise DLC chapter in Evil Dead: The Game (If they do that, they gotta have the cheese grater & Staffany as weapons 😂) A fun little Easter Egg I wanna share, and this gets into spoiler territory, so if you haven’t seen the film yet, don’t continue reading: Bruce Campbell was in the movie. He plays a VERY small part; during the scene where Morgan Davies character is playing the phonographs of the priests in 1923 who are in possession of the third volume of Naturom Demonto, as the main priest is proposing reading the incantations in the book, Bruce Campbell’s voice can be heard among the crowd of priests warning them not to recite the incantations, shouting “It’s called the book of the dead for a reason!”. Lee Cronin has stated that Bruce Campbell’s voice cameo was intentional & planned from the beginning, and considers him to be a time displaced Ash Williams in 1923.

I was that weird kid in the mid 90's that made all of his friends watch the first three movies and I could never have imagined we'd get such an excellent, fucked up, fun as hell movie now. Glad ya liked it, Cheers!

Didn’t even realize that somebody was trans, not that it really matters to me, but damn it proves your point how they just let the story flow and not try to forcefully include a line to show that they have a trans character. as a horror fan and evil dead fan, I’m so glad they nailed it and paved the way for future iterations and hopefully let creative minds loose on this franchise as you wonderfully stated! Such a great time to be a horror fan.

I loved this movie. The gore was effective, it was funny, and had a great theme. I loved the theme of motherhood and questioning whether or not you want it and doubting that you’ll be good enough. I felt so bad for the mother in this film! She seemed like such a good person, only for her to brutalized and possessed the way she was. I teared up multiple times throughout this movie. I also imagined myself in the situation. The pure primal instinct and adrenaline you would feel as the urge to pretty young ones takes over you. I fucking loved this movie.

Just saw this last night ( double bill with Renfield…also awesome ). It’s another win for the franchise…is this the most consistent franchise out there? Probably. Juicy gore but again I’ve gotta stop watching trailers as a lot was spoiled. Maybe I’ll learn some day. Lol. It’s nicely shot, a lot of Raimi-isms in the camera work which was great to see. Nice practical effects which is an absolute must for me with a film like this…I’m looking at YOU Thing remake! The kids were actually pretty solid and not at all annoying which was refreshing. The ending with the melding Deadites was great…reminded me of that Oats Studios short film, the one with the monster of many parts. One thing I was wondering during the opening scene…is it lore breaking? Because the Deadite was around in bright sunlight…I always thought Deadites couldn’t survive in direct sunlight…although Ash does shoot down that flying Deadite in AOD and it’s daylight but cloudy if I remember right ( been a while ). If I had to rate this it would be 4th in the franchise. Behind 1, 2 and the 2013 reboot…it’s not quite nasty enough to top the 2013 film but it’s still very solid and well worth seeing on the big screen 👍

I’m 37 and have been a hardcore Deadite since 14 when I bought the entire (then) trilogy on VHS… and only made it through the first one because it messed me up so much 😅. I really enjoyed Evil Dead Rise because I feel like it captures more of the wild, creative moments that I like so much from the series. All of the elevator stuff, Ellie using her fingernail to play the record and the fused deadite at the end were all the kind of touches I felt the 2013 movie lacked. That movie, for me, feels a little too grounded and serious. I love how so much of the Evil Dead franchise feels like people going “wouldn’t it be cool if _____?” and then they make some wild moment work. Evil Dead Rises feels, to me, like a return to that, and I couldn’t be happier.

@@HauntedHippie I hope your post-Rise excitement leads you to Evil vs. Evil Dead. It’s easily the wildest the franchise ever gets. More than anything, I think it nails pacing. Thirty-ish minutes a pop, which is what most of the episodes run, is the perfect time to spend with the show. Never dull and often leaving you wanting more. It never takes itself seriously; it’s just pure horror fun. I’m pretty sure the entire series on Blu-ray or DVD is pretty cheap too.

To me its the same problem with the exorcist believer. You can do throwbacks, put in elements and introduce familiar things, it doesnt mean you capture the heart of the franchise. Rise is trash imo. The characters are uninteresting, their choices horrible, there is 0 story, and the whole book introduction came across as random and lazy, as if they didnt know where to go with the whole thing. Maybe if they gave more substance and hints of the book being the cause seeking to unleash, it would do more to me. Did it had interesting ideas? Yeah. I liked the nail on the lp with the deadite functioning as a mouthpiece. Same as with the chewing on the glass and showing it poking through the skin. That brought up a reaction for me.

I just started watching your content (which is incredible) but I wanted to talk about the fact that someone brought a literal baby to see this movie when I went to see this movie and felt like you would find this funny as well 😅

The cheese grater reminded me of New Jack, a wrestler who used a cheese grater in the ECW promotion in the late 1990s. Yeah I’m old lol

I mean, I gave it a 1 star, because it's really not a movie for me, but the one liners were great and I laughed a lot. I wish I was part of the crowd to love Evil Dead but I'm glad people are enjoying it!

Film was great, I like how they didn't have to go so hard with the opening sequence but they did and it instantly grabs your attention and doesn't let go

Loved this movie! I watch lots of horror movies so I’m pretty desensitized of feeling scared. But this movie did make me cover my eyes for some parts. The characters felt so real and the gore was absolutely insane and the practical effects *chefs kiss😘 *

Honestly one of my favorite instalments of the franchise.. Thought the cast, especially the family members did a stellar job.. But Alyssa really shined in that role 😊 About letting fans take the reins, so many could learn from that..

"CGI blood is for squares." Couldn't agree more! I like my blood wet and sticky. Not sticky and wet makes me upset, haha. Anyhoo, I'm glad you liked this movie, I'm hoping to watch it.

The 2013 film has interesting place in the continuity. But unlike most people, I don't think it's a remake or a reboot. Main reason is that the director considers it to be a sequel to the original film (and original film only, he doesn't view Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness as being part of the same continuity). And, because I've been getting into the Army of Darkness comics recently, I can without a doubt in my mind say that there being a separate universe in which the original film happened, Ash died like originally intended, and then decades later the 2013 film happens with the same cabin and book (though changed with time) is 100% the case. Also, as a side note, this review was insane. My favorite review so far. Reminds me of a Gabi Belle video. Though not quite as chaotic.

Good review. Well written. Subbed. I did no research on this movie, and had no idea that they were both Aussies. I agree with the actress that she just has a huge gaping maw, and, in of itself, is creepy.

Cannot wait to check out Evil Dead Rise one of my favorite horror franchises. From what I’ve gathered from Bruce Campbell interview I can only imagine where this franchise can go & get some cool OG cast returns.

Personally I prefer the 2013 version way more, but Evil Dead Rises was still entertaining. I just wish it had less of a generic story and more memorable supporting characters

While this is nowhere as intense as the 2013 one this probably scared me the most out of all the evil dead movies, bringing the horror to a family setting made it so effectively disturbing and scary, the performance of Alyssa so intense and haunting and the fact that not even the kids were safe from extreme violence was awesome, I love it when horror movies refuse to give kid characters plot armor. Def Not my favorite in the franchise but it was so fun omg
