Evil Interview: Katja Herbers on Demon Kristen and If Sheryl Is Unforgivable

Ever since Evil first debuted on CBS in 2019, I was told time and time again that it was an absolute must-watch, that this genre mash-up of a show was right up my alley. I’m deeply embarrassed to admit that it took me until summer of 2022 to actually take that advice. But, sure enough, I fell so hard for Evil that now I’m determined to pay it forward - go watch all three seasons of Evil on Paramount+ right now!
The show stars Mike Coulter as David, a Catholic seminarian working as an assessor, someone tasked with investigating the legitimacy of miracles and also claims of demonic activity. David does this with the help of Aasif Mandvi’s Ben, a contractor who specializes in technology and has a knack for disproving supernatural phenomena via rational explanations. Rounding out the team with a different perspective and set of skills is Katja Herbers’ Kristen, a psychologist who doesn’t believe in the supernatural but rather that everything has an explanation in science. However, the more cases the team takes, the more Kristen's core beliefs are challenged.
Clearly I adore Evil overall, but one particular element of the show that makes it a must-watch series is Herbers’ performance. Not only does she deftly weave through complex cases that put everything the character believes to the test, but she goes all-in when tackling every single ounce of it, and given how many genres and tones Evil spans, that makes for a deliciously wide-ranging performance.
Given my enthusiasm for the show and her performance, it probably goes without saying that it was the ultimate treat to welcome Herbers to Collider Ladies Night to discuss her journey from Holland to Hollywood and, of course, what went down in Evil Season 3.

I ADORE THIS SHOW. All the acting is top notch and the stories are INSTANT CULT CLASSICS. Plus, I have a major CRUSH on Katja Herbers , she is such a DOLL!

This show is one of the most special ones out there :D So cute Katja herbers, i think the best kristen moment is hitting leland with her shoe rigth after he was pretending to be hit by her shoes lol

I've loved Katja for a long time. I noticed her first in small parts that she had in The Leftovers and The Americans. Since then, it's just been a major crush and I knew I had to try Evil if only because Katja was in it. I'm glad I did because the show is terrific. I'm happy she has steady work on a show which will provide some quality mileage. I know the cancellation of Manhattan still hurts her.

I wish Katja was a bigger named actress as she is amazing and one of the few reasons I love Evil. Yes I have a low key obvious crush on her but I don't deny it lol.

Been watching the show from the beginning and we're hooked. Wished you would have asked more about the kids. Every scene where the 4 talk at the same time and she seems to hear all of them.

The thing I love in the show is a lot of the supernatural events we see might or might not be real. It's up to interpretation. Kind of like in the real life. If you believe strongly enough in something you might see things that a non believer can't see. But do that make them be real or is it a delusion created by one's imagination? Who knows... And that for me makes the show so interesting to watch. It's a very smart and funny show. I love the characters and the horror elements quite a lot.

Thanks for the amazing interview. I can see this show going on for as long as the actors want to do it. What happened to that possessed kid from season 1? He tried to drown his sister.....come on, dying to know.

My favorite moment is every time Katja is shown on the screen. I am amazed at how talented this young lady is, she is lovely and adorable but I think the way she plays this character goes far beyond that. She is very non Hollywood and she seems humble in every way 🙂

Awesome interview Perri! Love this shows take on faith and science and it doesn’t villify either one. The big three of this series Kristen, David and Ben are solid and complex characters. Side note: Mike Colter was sadly wasted by Marvel if he can act like this !!!!!✌️

I don't know if there is a name for this already, but I consider Evil part of a "Strange Investigations" genre like X Files, Twin Peaks or Wild Palms. I usually describe the show to other people as "X Files from a religious stand point".

The acting is great on this show but the writing is horrible and all the plot holes or plots that don't even come up again even though it's a big thing that could change the whole story or events . I'm on season 3 and debating if I should quit now or plow through and hope it gets better. What you guys think is it worth finishing or will it just frustrate me more?

So if they rebooted the sequel trilogy in Star Wars, I think Katja HAS to be Leia, Sebastian Stan as Luke. I know most would suggest Carrie Fisher's daughter but I think she's just too young. She's similar in stature and her character in Evil shows how she can be authoratative and confidentmas well as sharp witted which is the main reason I think she's perfect for the role, if it were to ever come up/

Saw almost the entire first season, before i quit. It's just didn't do it for me, though i really liked Katja.

Be grateful about studios being cold. You have the benefit of dressing for it. Us guys always are forced to wear clothes that keep us so hot. And then there's the testosterone. Just wait till you get to the change of life. Then welcome to our world. You will be way too hot and sweating all the time. So sorry... no sympathy.
