when he starts "Criminally Insane," it's such a teachable moment because you really get to experience how less can be more and how the impact of a simple pattern can have such a profound and lasting effect. Two masters for sure.

Charlie wasn't staring him down and this was a more respectful battle of fun than anything else. Charlie is a respectful host but Dave, also respectful, decided to just follow Benante's lead. These are the best kind of drum-duets because it's not about out-doing the other drummer. It's about seeing if you can quickly build up something truly incredible with genuine chemistry. My 2 cents on this anyway.

Dave will always be regarded as the most iconic '80's thrash drummer, and deservedly so. But I think Charlie might be my personal favorite. He's just fantastic.

He is amazing, nothing but skill... But Lombardo can't be beaten by any other thrash drummers... If you wanna see something truly amazing look up george kollias or Derek roddy... They dont really play thrash but instead more death metal but still they're skills in terms of technically and speed is incomparable....

Love Dave, but Eric Moore was way better. Its an insult to his talent and to that of some other drummers to say lombardo's the best. Everyone who knows his drumming can clearly see this. Also check Ron Bruner vids with ST; also a lot better than Dave.

Hey, a whole week and we have our first "Lars makes a lot of money lol" comment. Longer than I thought. I love Lars, he's a smart guy. If you can put very little effort into your craft, and still have a couple million Nikolai Padillas spend their money on it…. why not? As a musician I appreciate the craft, Lars bank account is not how I measure his drumming abilities.

@@rockeruss555 Fast as fuck drum beat using ultrafast snare hits. Think like the insanely fast Death Metal and Grindcore bands. Charlie didn't pioneer them. He was a couple years too late, but he loves to say he's the first to use them in the S.O.D song "Milk". But he was two years too late.

You are forgetting the great Nick Menza from the best period of Megadeth! All three of them are brilliant drummers. In my opinion it's: 1. Lombardo 2. Menza 3. Benante But they are all so good that it's really up to personal preference I think!

@@akidk1499 Gar was for a shorter period of time so we only have 2 albums as samples! Vinnie was just a session drummer for "The system has failed" and I don't think he actually joined the band! Behler was ok but I don't think he can compare with Menza, Samuelson or DeGrasso...

After Dom Famularo, these are the two founders of the very fast double bass drum technique. Dom taught them both and can still go faster, but these two invented thrash drumming. The guy from Kreator might be another.

The whole reason blast beats exist in metal is totally down to one of the guys on stage, and the reason we have mega fast double bass drumming is because of the other, these are truly the most pivotal players in the development of extreme metal, and some younger drummers out there don't have any idea of it.

Regardless, Charlie's still one of my favourite drummers and one of the best in Metal.

Charlie plays Peter Criss's flam lick in the beginning of Strutter 3 or 4 times. Then he adds double bass to it around the 3:00 mark. Nice little nod to the Catman. Kick ass drumming by both Dave and Charlie. Cool how they worked it out and stayed together through a lot of it.

Gar was a "Praying Mantis" behind the drums. Dude had such a swagger to his playing. It looked as if he was hardly moving when they played live. He played some of the fastest jazz/metal beats ever laid to vinyl!!! Any one that questions that, should have a listen to Killing is my Business, or Peace Sells. Gar had such a finesse and blended his playing in so well, sometimes you would lose him in the surrounding rhythms. His timing with the other instruments was that good. That's a jazz drummer for ya though! LoL R.I.P. Gar.

@@richardcurtis1912 you would really appreciate him doing a clinic or something like this. If Charlie is better now than he was back then-and he was killer back then-imagine a clean and sober Gar now. He'd be incredible!

@@KickflipGnasty total beast. I'm into that Friedman/Menza lineup even if Extinction and Youthanasia aren't very good imo. But he was a born metal drummer. Gar wasn't. By accident and/or by design Gar was an innovator. There weren't many jazz drummers doing metal when Megadeth got going.

@@KickflipGnasty Youthanasia was the first Megadeth album I purchased and even though the drumming isn't fast, technical or complex, it was perfect for that album and Nick had that nac for creating the perfect drum parts for the songs he was playing on. I was a fan straight away.

I dunno about that, there was a punk band called Asocial and they were doing blast beats in 82
