The Evolution Championship Series (Evo for short) represents the largest and longest-running fighting game tournaments in the world. For 21 years, Evo has brought together the best of the best in an electric exhibition of skill and fun. During Evo's flagship event each year, fans gather to compete in open format tournaments that crown World Champions.
The Community Showcase at Evo 2023 is an extension of the main event and features tournaments for beloved community games from around the FGC.

John Choi was one of the best in SF2 USA rankings during the Tips n Tricks magazine days. So glad to see him still playing and I recognized him from the thumbnail!! 🙂

I remember when John Choi eliminated Daigo in Evo pools in some iteration of sf4 (ultra, maybe? Daigo was playing e.ryu). Everyone was calling it a huge upset and I was like, No? Choi has been an expert in the shoto mirror for decades.

Seeing John Choi still out there rocking the ST wins is kind of nostalgic. Used to see his name in old articles of gaming magazines before the internet was a big thing. Makes you realize how much time has past but more important how good Super Turbo still holds up even as a point of view from a spectator. Matches is quick and it's easy to understand the nuance decision making at certain points. Props to Silentscope for getting that far with Cammy.

I'm 42, 43 in 1.5 months... I know it's rough. And that's young to a lot of people lol. Gotta have perspective and feel blessed (I don't mean this in any religious sense lol) that we're still here, no cancer, no random life cut short... two of the closest people to me (fiance/commonlaw wife and best friend forever) had people close to them die in horrible ways way too young, can't imagine what that feels like. Here's to you and me being able to still watch evo in another 30, 40 years. Keep your brain young! 🥲🙃😉🤘🤙☘☘☘🍀

And he was playing from the 90s. He's been in some of the most legendary SF2 matches against Japanese pros like Daigo, Nuki, Tokido, Aniken, Kurahashi etc

super turbo will never die. I feel the OG games like ST, 3S, A3 and CVS2 should always have a spot at evo. Why fill so much of the streaming time with pool matches of SF6 mostly consisting of nobodies when you could put on top 6/8's of classic games

Arcade. There wasn't an SNES version of Super Turbo, just World Warriors, 2 Turbo (just Turbo, not Super Turbo), and Super. The first system to get a true home version of ST was the Panasonic 3DO, of all things.

lot of people don't just play ranked, also if you are well known, playing ranked, is like actively avoiding games, people won't accept your games, in 3s there are ton of strong american players, yet on discord there is a constant complaint from them that people dodge them, so what some super strong people in 3s do is, they have lots of alt accounts, hell i remember reading on discord not fully sure but it was probably exodus, that he has special accounts for some players who he knows would dodge him on his main account, haha, but choiboy doesn't use this alt thing so he's left with B or else people won't play with him.

online frame drops give mid-tier characters like Ryu a disadvantage. I've taken a few ranked sets from Choi online but have no doubt he'd own me offline

@@hamiltondouglas2746 in fightcade you have to be mindful of region too, playing with people over the continent in 300ms sucks, and when you climb the ranks, your pool of players becomes smaller and smaller, i am from pakistan and after getting B rank it almost became impossible to get ranked games, only super hardcore people would accept my ranked challenges and after sf6 those guys disappeared too, at that point i practically have to beg big guys to pound me because no way people who are obviously worse than you but in same rank would accept games, these games don't have endless supply of players, getting games already is a blessing, being hardcore and only playing rank makes you wait all day in lobby with no games.

No shame not beating Ikaruga.... but the wall should be the stage 4 boss. That thing is like a straight brain-wiring check. You either have the brain wiring to comprehend it or not lol. Makes me want to go watch a full playthrough by someone who does. Big Tohou fan here (the OG games, PCB, IN, MoF, SA, etc.... but the fan games have gotten legit good in their own right the last few years too lol). But Ikaruka is magic.

He's an O.Sagat main, zoning is his greatest strength and he's been doing it since the 90s. His spacing is also elite so he can punish when opponents jump over fireballs. Basically this legend has 30+ years of experience playing SF2

He isn't as good in Super Turbo as he was in World Warriors. Still good, but not as busted as he was in the first version. What's more surprising is no O. Sagat or Claw, who are considered the best characters in the game by a wide margin.
