First, it's called "playing your strengths". Ryu has a very good hadoken, and if you wanna win in SF and an opponent can't deal with a strategy you're using, you press that advantage. This video shows that Poongko knows that very well. Second, Daigo is so good at landing DPs that the phrase "umeshoryuken" (psychic dragon punch) was invented to describe his reads. I'm glad you brought this up though. If you have more to say, please use the "reply" feature so that I'll be notified.

@hellterskelter89 Yes this is true. Also, this is one of Daigo's 1st couple times maining a top tier character. For most of his career, he was SF3 Ken (High Tier), S/SF4 Ryu (High Tier), and SF2T Ryu (which was considered top of high/bottom of top)

@b7ray32 Actually, in the total of 4 times they've met that was recorded, Daigo has won 3/4 of them. GameStop International Tournament 2009 - Ryu vs Ryu (4 - 1) - Winner: Daigo Evolution World Tournament 2011 - Yun vs Seth - (0 - 2) - Winner: Poongko Daigo vs Poongko 30 Kumite match - Yun vs Seth (22 - 8) - Winner: Daigo TOPANGA TV Special FT10 - Yun vs Seth (10 - 6) - Winner: Daigo In tournament settings, Poongko has a slight advantage. In long sets? Umehara has the clear advantage.

I already stated my reasoning a month ago with Bisboy, but I'll reiterate. Seth's Dragon Punch is absurdly safe and can blast through anything. Seth can also follow it up with easy, high damage combo's that are pretty much guaranteed to dizzy the opponent. Back then, nobody knew just HOW safe his DP was until Poongko took the risk.

Daigo is one of the best. Poongko simply outplayed him in this match up. It happens. Daigo will move on, learn from it, and improve his game as he always does. Congrats to Poongko on a great fight and spectacular finish. I think his showmanship is great. It gets the crowd excited and its fun to watch.

this was actually a very good lesson for daigo. He used to play the most solid ryu in the entire world but since AE came out and he switched to yun, he's not even half as solid and consistent as he used to be.His yun just wasn't ready for this match. I think his switch to akuma is nice, akuma is generally very offense oriented but has one of the best defensive tools (air hadokens). I hope to see a more solid daigo in the future but i think it would be better if he just went back to ryu.

I felt bad for Daigo. Evo is his favorite tournament, but everyone there is against him just because he is known as the best... Being the best sucks sometimes. Anyways, congrats to Fuudo for winning the whole thing and to Latif for beating the 4 top players in a row. Watching it live via streaming was awesome.

Whether or not he's the best SF player, anyone playing the game should aspire to be more like Daigo. He's the embodiment of Ryu - he plays for bigger challenges and doesn't showboat.

@Demoniq You're pretty much spot on. Daigo got outclassed and outplayed. The Seth is cheap excuse is laughable when Yun is volumes better then Seth in AE. As you said, Daigo got Baited into wake up DP's, in which Poongko predicted and punished him every single time. Then when Daigo would guess on what to do on Wakeup. Instant Grab SPD by Poongko. In this match up, Daigo lost because Poongko was simply the Better Player. For crying out loud, his last round he perfected Daigo.

Doesn't make it any less cool. On a related note though, I will say that SF4's newness is what ultimately led to Poongko's victory. Before this match, the SF4 metagame wasn't fully explored and people thought Seth was a "skill" character that needed to be played carefully. Then Poongko came along and said, "No, he isn't." He showed just how risk free Seth's DP was and just how easy it was to dizzy opponents with his combos. I still think Daigo is more skilled, but Poongko is ballsier.

Seth doesn't need to FADC after his DP to keep risk to a minimum. In fact, Seth doesn't need to do much of ANYTHING to minimize risk to himself. Seth has dozens of attacks that put him at zero risk and a lot of them set up for high damage high dizzy combos. I only focused on his DP because it one of his best options and the one Poongko uses the most.

All they achieved this year is due to their unwavering determination and love for fighting games. Very few people to practice with, console and arcade game being unpopular and no local competition to earn money at all. They will have to immediately return to their jobs to make a living. I hope they do keep up their work though the future of Korean fighting gamers looks grim except for Tekken probably.

Not only did Poongko tear his jacket off; throw it in the crowd, tear his belt off; throw on the ground; tear his EVO badge off; throw IT on the ground, proceeding to poor Red Bull all over his face; and gesture like "I am about to fuck this dude up!" ... but HE BACK IT UP BY WHOOPING DIAGO ("The Beast")'s ASS!!! haha INCREDIBLE MOMENT IN GAMING HISTORY FOLKS. Lastly about Daigo, it looks like he gets a ton of hate because people are jealous of his success and getting recognition for it. I'm sure if Poongko had won Evo 2 times straight instead of Daigo, Poongko will be getting the haters. This game is about matchups and being able to read your opponent. Daigo may not have been able to do that against Poongko, but Fuudo did. And Daigo and Fuudo are generally considered on equal level, so you can't really use arguments like Poongko > Daigo.

We need to give Korean players more credits considering what kind environment they had to practice in nowadays. Korea used to have good pool of players and infra structure for arcade games in the past and had some world class players for Virtual Fighter series and so on. However, those days are long gone and arcade games are in ruins in the country. Lanshops replaced the arades and online games dealt a daeth blow to remaining ones.

Nobody has an argument for Seth being balanced. The whole purpose of AE was that it was deliberately designed NOT to be a balanced game. And atop the roster sitting an unbalanced, dominant mess was not Seth, it was Yun. Two years was new for a Street Fighter game before the internet. After the internet, two years was enough for two new updates because of how fast the meta fleshed out.

Poongko's not some little kid. He's a respected player thats been playing the game for a long time. It's evo. If he wants to have a little fun, hype the crowd a bit, why not? It's what the crowd wants anyway. It's obvious that he respects Daigo as a formidable player, thus the theatrics to begin with. He wanted to put on a show and he did. Doesn't speak anything of his attitude as a player or to the game.

@chidoneone I don't think you understand what happened. In the gaming world, this is equivalent to Babe Ruth pointing to the outfield and hitting a homerun. Poongko showed some flash, then: 1) Put a whoop ass against Daigo (who used a top tier character) known for excellence, comeback skills, and purely just the best SF player known, 2) At the main event, EVO, 3) And the Perfect to finish Daigo off. It would look stupid if he lost, but he won. He walked the walk in this match.

Daigo's decision of mashing dp wasn't the only thing that lead to his ultimate loss. It was the fact that seth's mixup game is rock paper scissors. Just like how viper's BK is 50/50, seth also has a simliar game. Daigo guessed wrong for the most part, and the mashing of upkicks did not help at all. He should have went for a simple strategy. Accept all throws, but block all shoryukens. Especially at this level, although it sounds simple, one blocked dp is all you need for an instant ultra punish.

Seth also has an insane enough reach and can control his opponents movement enough for good Seth players to file those weakness under "who cares?". As for why I don't compete? Because technical skill is just one of many factors in SF4. People, I'm not ragging on Poongko. He is the most amazing Seth player I've ever seen and has everything it takes to win championships. @EPVxRaize Seth said in the beginning of this match that Daigo was at his absolute best and most dominate he's ever seen him as well as using one of the most dominate characters in the game. "Shin Daigo" is what he called him. Daigo also said he caught a lot of flak from other players that he tier whores and such, so he stopped caring and purposely picked Yun to be his new main. Slice it any way you want, but prior to this, Daigo was in the best shape ever seen.

@theSkarekro I understand that. One of the things Poongko abuses is Seth's DP priority, but how many times did Poongko backdash away from Daigo's DP? The problem is Daigo didnt seem to care. He was intent on a rushdown win and it played right into Poongko's game. It seems like people are trying to make so many excuses for Daigo (bad matchup, Seth is cheap, it was Daigo's friend playing, etc) rather than owning up to the fact he was simply overwhelmed and brutally beaten.

No, it does not equate to the same thing. Performance anxiety is not inexperience. I posted my comments because I was sick of Poongko fanboys calling Daigo a "noob" and saying Seth is balanced when that clearly isn't true. @skiie Good comment. U.S. may not have a humble rep but damn we root for every foreign player who attends our tournies. When U.S. players go overseas (mainly in Japan) no one practically gives a fuck. Plus Daigo was using the most overpowered/hated/oversaturated character at the time. Poongko decided not to be a tight ass and revel in the excitment (that's not being disrespectful, that's being hype). I hope for every weabo fanboy to go to japan and see how indifferent they care about them.

Poongko won because he was the better player and this was simply part of the moment where Daigo had fallen off in SF4. He hasn't looked the same ever since this match. He dropped matches to Justin Wong and Ricky Ortiz in major tournaments for crying out loud, not to mention his performance at this year's Evo, he honestly got beaten just as, if not more convincingly. He's not the best, and he hasn't been the best for years. That's all I'm saying. When someone loses, give the winner their credit.

The match-up is honestly 6-4 Seth. He counters the twins, but that doesn't make him a better overall character (see Sagat vs Akuma in vanilla). Yun is better at the start when neither character has meter but due to Seth's defensive options and zoning ability that Yun lacks Seth is able to gain the advantage assuming both players are of equal skill. This match is an anomaly however, because Daigo doesn't know the match-up and Poongko does, so it makes it seem more one-sided than it really is.
@JusRed48

I don't know why there's a need to give it your own definition. Skill is how good someone is at something, and when two people compete in something, the one who is more skilled will win. You can word it how you like, call it choking, call it psychology, it all equates to the same thing. The skill doesn't measure up.

There are very few numbers of arcades left through out the country and people who plays arcade games are very few. Fighting game player pool is even worse. All the Korean players for Evo 2012 is from the same private gaming cafe. Even when they won the first price, the airflight fee is so expensive that they will be left with very little sum of money when they do return. The cafe manager had to pay for everything with his own money. They had great hardship just to find players to practice with.
