Evocati are directly linked with the term 'Vocation'. Originating in the word Vocatio (Latin for 'Calling') these men were literally called up for service. And why people, 2000ish years later, still ask if you have "found your calling" when asking you what you want to do (work, study, etc).

Idk about that. They only got the veteran status after 20 or more years of service. Today it's whatever contract they signed up from and it's usually 4 years. I'd say the benefits are better today but the respect for a veteran's in the past was better. Most people don't care if you're a veteran today.

Your odds of surviving 20 years of service back then would be a lot lower than the 99.9% that survive a 4 year enlistment today.

Retired vetean here and I'll be fair and say we are treated very well. Aside from my pension I get numerous benefits and the VA Loan gives us the ability to acquire land with no money down needed. I did 23 years and believe me, you earn it. My body is more broken than those in my age bracket, but I wouldn't have traded a thing. Now other veterans (non-retirees) who do no get treated well, I can say it's a spectrum of treatment. Yes many are lost in the cracks and through either their own avoidance, ignorance, or inability they do not receive what they should. But many also don't even try. Every homeless vet you see, dishonorable discharge or not, they could get care and support but either can't or won't participate. Can't because they either don't know or aren't in a position to get in the system. And those who won't are often due to just ignorance or willful defiance. It's a tough road without support, and that usually is the discriminator in how well a veteran re-integrates. Veteran's organizations like the VFW, American Legion, DAV, etc. help but have their issues too.

@hieronimusrexx9203 2 ай бұрын
It comes to about 10% enlisted ranks and 30% officer ranks get to a full 20+ years point. I think total aggregate in the force is 15-17% make it to 20 years. Most as you say do their initial contract (1-5 years) and usually a reup in there brings the rest (6-11 years of service) to their end of time in service. It used to be more common to see anyone with over 10 years in going the distance to 20 years because it was an all or nothing retirement system. Since about 2010 it's been a tiered retirement system, where you get paid based on years of service and not just the flat 20years or nothing.

Unfortunately he didn't delve into what payouts his family could expect should he not make it that far. Watch them all and come to your own conclusion.

Career active duty U.S. Army Soldiers who retire join something called the retired reserve. They receive a portion of their active duty pay, the percentage of which depends on how many years after 20 they served. The last recall of people in the the U.S.' retired reserve of significance happened after 9/11.

There are two things in this video that don't partiuculary add up to me, but maybe someone else knows the anwer to this: First is the fact that the evocati supposedly predominantly recruited from the pretorian guard. This doesnt make that much sense because in this video we learn that the evocati gained their importance through their experience, knowledge and guidence, fullfilling roles as instructors, architects, military advisors, elite militia for emergencies and so on. Following this logic you would want those kind of legionaries who have experienced the most combat. The pretorians main task however was the protection of the city of Rome and the emperor. Therefore there isn't a lot of historical evidence of the pretorian guard actually participating in a lot of military campaigns or major battles. Its ranks probably mostly consisted of rich and or royal Romans who wanted be part of the prestigious guard without risking too much danger. Considering this, i'd want someone who spent 20 years of his life fighting in Gaul, Africa and Brittania to train my upcoming professional soldiers instead of someone who spent 16 years of his life patroling the streets of the captial. The second fact that confused me was the the idea of evocatii becoming centurions. To my knowledge, being a roman centurion meant being at the front line for the entirety of the battle. While the normal legionary would be exchanged for a comrade after a certain amount of time and if the situation allowed for it, a centurion had to hold his ground, inspire and command his troops and generally expose himself to the very front of the brutal meat grinder an antique battle usually used to be. Whoever has even a little experience with fighting and/or martial arts knows how exhausting even considerably short training/sparring sessions can be. Now imagine this combined with all the adrenaline of being in the midst of battle while fighting for your life and instead of doing this for 5, 10 or 20 minutes, your doing it for hours. This is a task only the fittest of the fit would be able to cope with and even among those the mortatility rate was probably incredibly high. Now imagine someone who's body already experienced 20 years of fighting, probably took lots of damage and is also not able to perform on the same level it could 10-15 years ago. I feel like, even though there probably were exceptions, someone like this would be wasted as a front line officer. They surely were still able to fight, since there are some things you simply do not forget or unlearn and their experience must have given them a superior moral in diffiicult situations but no matter how far the mind can go, the older a person gets the less the body is able follow. I can definetly imagine them being held as reserve and then swapped in and out in decisive moments of a battle but a 40 year old, tired, battle worn man fighting for hours and hours nonstop without a break just doesn't seem like the best fit for the task, especially considering the fact that his knowledge preserves so much value being shared with other soldiers. I just don't se why you would waste that by throwing him at the font lines.

Under Augustus, every legionaire had to serve 16 years legion duty at which point they were discharged with retirement bonus. All those discharged were obligated to recall for four years. Thus, all retired legionaires were potential evocati until their obligation expired. This video is focused on those evocati that were specifically recalled to active duty. Rome relied on evocati as provincial militia where they settled, as emergency reserves during war or insurrection, as an experienced manpower pool to ensure legions remained at full strength, as training resources, and as technical specialists for complex legion projects ( e.g. constructing major fortified bases, bridges, aqueducts, paved roads, and warships or supply ships.) The governor of the province could recall obligated evocati to service, and he could invite any honorable veteran after the end of obligation to return to voluntary duty. It is quite likely that voluntary evocati called to legion duty were selected by their veteran collegia militaria and were furnished with a letter of recommendation from the governor.

The Pretorian Guard in fact participated in various conflicts, one was the campaign in Germania under Germanicus ( see Battle of Idistaviso and the Angrivarian Wall ). They also saw quite the action during the Year of the 4 Emperors. Under Domitian and Trajan, the guard fought consistently in wars from Dacia and Mesopotamia. They also fought the brutal Marcomannic Wars under Marcus Aurelius, in the subsequent Roman civil wars under several emperors ( most notably Aurelian and his war of reunification against the Palmyrene Empire ), and finally against Constantine I under Maxentius at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. They consistently participated in most if not all conflicts of Rome and were regarded as elite units. Not to mention that they were also meant to be used as spies for the Emperor. Patrolling the City was the duty of the Urban Cohorts, not the Pretorian Guard’s. Nor were they actually meant to protect the Emperor in the city, as that duty fell upon the Imperial German Bodyguard ( at least for the Julio-Claudian Dynasty ). So, no, a Pretorian is not a mere police officer that can fight in wars, it was actually one of the best units of Legion. Like isn’t it obvious since they were meant to protect the Emperor in the Battlefield and were deployed even in his absence as elite units?
@Geralt.5261
@Geralt.5261 Жыл бұрын
@@LuisBrito-ly1ko It appears that i was partly mistaken. The German bodyguard however existed next to the praetorian guard and it was boths task to protect the emperor inside the city. However it was the emperors decision whom he trusted more since the praetorians were notorious for being "open to political change" if you know what i mean. However i was wrong when it comes to their military expertise since they, even though it probably also depends on the time periuod, saw more campaigns and battles then i thought they did. Thanks for the input!

There was a version of _Evocati_ for the _Praetorians_ : *_Evocati Augusti_* designated by the emperor alone. Given that the Praetorian Guards _themselves_ were largely hand-picked veterans- it speaks to the standard they were held to - their mandatory service was shorter in duration; 12 years with the _Praetorians_ instead of 16 years in the legions, from 13 BC, then carried to, respectively, 16-20 years in year 5 BC- according to Tacitus. Their pay was higher than that of a legionary. Under Nero, the pay of a _Praetorian_ was 3 1/2 times a legionary, augmented by additions of _donativum_ granted by each new emperor on their accession; the additional pay = several years' regular pay, & was often repeated on important occasions: military anniversaries, imperial birthdays, births, & marriages. On the death of Augustus in 14 AD, his successor, Tiberius, was faced with mutinies among both the Rhine & Pannonian legions. According to Tacitus, the Pannonian forces were dealt with by Tiberius' son Drusus, accompanied by only *two* _Praetorian_ _cohorts_ (remember, a _cohort_ was much less than a legion- less than 500 men), a handful of elite allies, & some additional cavalry- So, we can estimate *less* than 2,000, against 5,500 (x 2, because it was *2* legions): roughly 11,000 in total- possibly fewer, if there were some down with illness (or 'illness', if you know what I mean). It was put down with little trouble...
