Indica, Indigo sedan, Indigo Marina station wagon, Indigo CS compact sedan, Indica Xeta, Vista, Manza, Bolt and Zest. We dive into every single version and variant of the Indica in this epic hour-long feature on the Tata Indica. We also have never-before-seen pictures of the Rover prototypes, talk about the motorsport variants, and the hot hatch prototypes and bring out inside stories from the Indica’s 20-year history in this special episode of Gone But Not Forgotten hosted by Editor Sirish Chandran. This includes the Tata - Fiat partnership which resulted in Tata Motors selling Fiat cars from their showrooms! And did you know the Indica Vista's X1 platform is still very much in use today and in fact, living its best life underpinning the Nexon while the Tiago traces it roots back to the Gen 1 Indica. All this and more as we explore the fascinating journey of the Tata Indica from its launch at ₹2.6 lakh on New Year's Eve, 1998, to racking up an impressive 115,000 fully paid-up orders within a week and all its variants over 20 years. Ratan Tata's vision for the Indica was quite ambitious - it would have the size of the Maruti Zen, the internal dimensions of an Ambassador, and come at the price of a Maruti 800 with the running cost of a diesel. And it did. The Indica forced Maruti to slash prices of its bread-and-butter 800 by ₹30,000. The Tata Indica transformed Tata Motors from a trucking major into a passenger car behemoth with Jaguar and Land Rover as part of its portfolio. But more importantly, it proved that cars can be designed and engineered right here in India; in effect, it gave birth to the indigenous automotive industry. The Tata Indica was finally put to rest in 2018 after 2 million units were produced over 20 years, and the taxi-cab image it, unfortunately, acquired towards the end of its life means the nameplate is effectively Indi-gone. Gone, but never forgotten.

Dear Sirish, Simply hats off! Having had the grossly underpowered diesel (nonturbo) V2 - of which I still have comical memories of trying to overtake a bus on a long downhill and still failing - to the petrol V2 to the Indigo Diesel to the Original 1lakh rupee nano to the Nano Gen2 to the NanoX to the Aria to the Nexon in present day - you just captured why a family like mine and so many million familes in India are still loyalist TATA afficianados... Cheers!

We had an Indica Xeta GLS which we bought new in 2008. And boy we fell for its Salsa red colour. It was a love at first sight moment for all of us. But that was all about it. The engine was lethargic, fit and finish was not even comparable to other vehicles in that price range. But what really stood out was the space inside and the comfortable ride due to the independent suspension. This was Tata's USP.

This is a mega labor of love. Over the holidays I spent days poring through all my old Overdrive tests of the Indica, dug out pics of my long term V2 that I’d taken on a road trip with my family, unearthed details and pics even id never seen before and more. This episode (an hour long! Thank you for your patience in advance!) even runs through the motorsport variants, none of which saw the light of day. I hope you enjoy the episode and if we’ve missed out on anything let us know in the comments.

From the earliest days with our first-generation Sumo and Indica, through the iterations like the Sumo Victa, Indica Vista, Tiago, and now the BS6 Altroz 1.5 Diesel, I've traversed the journey from childhood to adulthood. The sight of the (T) emblem in the middle of the steering wheel always evokes nostalgia for me. From being a child nestled on my father's lap during long drives in our Sumo to now embarking on extended journeys in my Altroz, each moment feels like coming home-safe and comfortable. I can vividly recall the distinctive sound of each engine and the nostalgic scent they carried, cherishing every memory made in those cars. Growing up with and continuing to drive Indian-made vehicles fills me with pride, knowing they are entirely indigenous. Despite the common perception that Tata cars lack reliability, our experience has been different. Perhaps it's because we understand how to care for them properly. Over the years, our Tata cars have collectively covered over 20 lakh kilometers, and not once have we been stranded due to a breakdown on the road.

My Dad's (our) first car was this exact 2003 Indica V2 DLE Base Model with black bumpers, the only luxury feature it had in it was an AC which worked very well, he used it for 11 years until 2014 and drove it for 2.5 Lac kms, my mom still says that the space and airy feel of Indica is unmatched and yes it was super reliable never ever had any major issues and as it was base model so it had very less electronics to fail 😊 such a nostalgic feeling watching this video (currently I have 2020 Altroz Diesel) and I can proudly say that I'm a loyal Tata Fan (not the andhbhakt types though 😂)

Vista is a great car. We have been using it for 11 years now. It has clocked around 1 lakh kilometers. I haven't faced any major issues so far. The one issue we faced was with the thermostat. Replaced the clutch three times. Good car for the ghat roads. The instant torque delivery puts a smile on my face. The most interesting part is the steering. The way it re-centers.. mmmmmm... unfortunately, manufacturers don't make such beautiful steering nowadays. A light off-road can be done thanks to its ground clearance. I have no thoughts of selling my car any day. The 1.2, 1.6 MJDs were gems at that time. The MJDs have proved their reliability in the cab avatars. Spending around 7-8k makes the car run effortlessly for the entire year. Thanks for the video, Team evoINDIA.

Hey Sirish, I learnt to drive on an Indica itself and later went ahead to buy an Indigo. Ican very well remember the fan belt squeaking of both Indica as well as Indigo. Used the Indigo for 5 years and then bought a diesel Fiat Linea. As you rightly mentioned this really was a gem of an engine although the Linea always felt underpowered as against it's rivals Rapid and Vento. I always felt that Linea's example as a Tiger with a heart of a cat. I later switched from a Linea to a diesel XUV700. But thanks a lot for taking me back in the memory lane. I have been following this series of "Gone but not forgotten" series from the very first episode. Cheers!

Had the nostalgic dreams of Indica during childhood when it was launched and pictured on magazines. Knowing my passion, my parents used to cut those car photos from magazines and newspapers and stick on our bedroom wall so that we as kids could be happy. My mom was a diehard fan of Indica and one bedroom wall was dedicated to Indica cutouts alone❤. 15 years later, in 2015, we bought Indica's last sibling BOLT, with a 1.2L Turbo Petrol (Revotron) Engine and driving it for 8 years now. Apart from the excellent drive quality, comfort and a reliable engine, it has rust issues, still we are paying lumbsome amounts for maintaining it as we share such a great sentiments to it❤❤❤❤

About 9 years ago or maybe even more, there was some real bad thunderstorm in Kolkata, I remember. We were in a neighbor's Indica V2 DL variant. We went through about thigh level, not patches, STRETCHES! of water!! The car kept purring, even though the water seeped into 3 of the 4 footwells, the fan belt got louder but it didnt die on us. We stopped on a steep flyover hill to let the water seep out and it did! The car would not let us get out and wade through water. The car just kept going through stretches where Zens, Esteems and Santros were out and being pushed by their owners. At one point the rear started floating as well because an asshole bus driver powered through instead of going slow. Massive respect and a soft spot for all Indicas all around. And i absolutely agree what Sirish is talking about the Meter binnacle or instrument cluster. The V2 diesels had black background and red transparent needles. I havent found any cooler needles to date.

He really aspired for a Diesel car in home, pushing up the budget (as set by Mummy obviously) from a Chevy Spark LT to a Indica DLX then to a Indica DLG Turbo to a Indica DLG DiCOR then to a Indigo V series then finally to a Indigo LX TDi and then abruptly changing his mind (after having test driven the TDi and DiCOR engines back to back for 3 times) for Indigo LS DiCOR at the delivery day! My first new car was a 2012 Indica Vista quadrajet ... Did almost 90k kms on it and I just loved it. I sadly sold it in 2018 to upgrade to a 7 seater (CNG). From a power perspective the CNG was a serious downgrade 😂, but it compensated with its fuel efficiency and 7 seats. Later in 2022 I gifted my wife the Nexon EV Prime. We both just love it and eagerly wait for our turn to drive it even today. 😂😂 Whatever people say about Tata cars or even criticize it. I agree that if well maintained it would never let you down. I drove my Vista for 6 years, did many long and late night journeys alone with my wife and baby girl, but it never embarrassed me or let me down. And most importantly it always kept us safe. I respect TATA and i love their cars.❤ Thank you for this wonderful video that has brought back awesome memories. A superb one, Sirish....though never an Indica owner, it was often an Indica cab that took us to meetings in Mumbai over the years, till Toyota Etios and Maruti Dezires took over..it was a huge and steep and troubled learning curve, for Tata for sure..as explained to me by people who had garages working on them, the packaging of the engine compartment, when compared to the easy-to-work-on Japanese ones, was an example of torturous complexity, to do a clutch replacement, you could apparently only access it those days by almost dismantling a lot of the front assemblies...and that joke, taking off from the Amitabh line"Jahan hum khade hotey hai, line wahin se shuru hoti hai", well, that was adapted for the over worked Indica cabs, which only replaced the word "khade" with "breakdown", explaining long backup traffic jams on narrow roads, ( more a consequence of poor maintenance than specific inherent inadequacies)... having said that, in all fairness, it was the Indica cabs which were the wheels that drove the BPO revolution in Pune, picking up and dropping employees all day and night, unimaginable to old Punekars...so a long story, with current cars being beautifully built, hopefully niggle free now, to a very large extent..

The OG indica did get PS, PW on all 4 windows, body colored bumpers on the top spec DLX model (My uncle owned one 99 model). The design that you said came with Xeta, actually debuted with the 2004 'Refreshingly new' Indica including the wheel arch extensions and clear lens head/tail lamps. The Xeta also had a 1.4L engine initially which was then downsized to 1.2 in few months after debut. The petrol Indica did get white backlit, white dials, with a tachometer, silver garnish around center console, a round silver color gearbox against all black and grey diesel Indica. Believe it or not, it was one of the mains reasons I convinced dad to buy it over the diesel, feel silly now though. 🤦‍♂ If I am not wrong, the Tiago shares the basic floor plan with the OG Indica / V2, right? The Vista did get a TDi engine from the Indica Turbo / Indigo (I think) along with the Qudrajet engine. Tata showrooms were more than happy to sell us a Fiat product. My uncle bought his Manza and 6 months later we bought the Linea from the same dealership and they were equally enthusiastic if not more. I did know about a few of the things you spoke about like the Indica Silhouette (I still have the Issue with me), Indica sport etc. But I learnt quite a lot about the Indica history, some concepts I didn't know about, the Rally version, the story etc. I didn't realize how an hour had passed by. Superb episode!

The first memory I had of Indica was going to the Tata Showroom here in Kolkata in the year of 2004. My parents took me to buy their 2nd car after Ambassador. The first thing that I said after seeing the Indica was, "oh my god, what a hideous looking car." That's it. We went to Maruti showroom and bought Alto after that, which ran for about 5lacs km (499992 to be exact) in the next 12 years without any kind of trouble. I still think that was the greatest decision ever.

Slept while watching… since that’s what I remember doing while being inside a diesel Indica… it’s that comfortable and safe… it’s my complement to this product that no other cars took the crown yet. The owner clocked around 2 lakhs without any issues. Never been into petrol Indica, but wanted to have one in those days even if there’s a Zen. I remember how the journalist compared the then odd looking 2nd gen Honda city with Indigo as lost twins; but Marina is something that grabbed my attention with that extra glasshouse with still better looking vertical tail lamp which reminds of old Ford Endeavor’s like bulk in those days. If it continued, then it would have evolved into Roomster like product. Thankfully we still have these platforms that proves it ground against new comers in terms of style, safety and dynamics… kudos… my fat salute to India’s Car… IndiCa…🇮🇳 🚗

What a nostalgic episode this was. The Indica has always been near to my heart. It was our first ever car. We had the Indicab version of the car my dad bought in an attempt for a side hustle in the travels business. It was a diesel and man it used to vibrate at idle..! although I was so fond of that vibrations haha. I remember those days when we used to go out for a drive at night and I used to play Red FM 93.5 in the car and listen to the hits at the time. This one time we had a summer vacation computer course in our school in Dadar and this one my dad decided to drop me at school in our car but we ended up missing the whole session because we simply wouldn't get space to park hahaha. Then I remember my first road trip to Vajreshwari and we Managed to fit 4 adults and 3 children plus a driver in the car..! It was crazy..! Eventually my father gave up on that side hustle and we had to let go our beloved Indicab as it was showing some issues being a diesel and not having much running. Thank you EVO for bringing those memories back. Thank you for covering this..! Gone but definitely not forgotten.. :)

My maternal grandfather bought an indica v2 diesel back in 2002, and that car looked like a sports car in the remote village he lived in, my grandfather had a marshal and a Sierra prior to the indica, and driving the indica after driving those massive ladder on frame suv's felt so smooth, it looked much more luxury than the maruti cars sold back in the day, and it was a superb millage machine!!!!! Still when i look back at the memories we made in that car brings a smile on my face!!!! 😊😇

Have so many memories with the car, we drove it like crazy within Kolkata and also took it to Puri and Murshidabad on numerous occasions. But the most cherished memory is of me missing the school bus, and my dad having to drive me to school, scolding me all the way! Little did he know, I intentionally missed the bus to spend some time with him and drive up to the school gate in a "big" car, making my friends envious! It was also the first car in my family to cross the 1,00,000 KM mark. It stayed loyal to us till 2015 when we decided to say goodbye!

My first drive of a Tata vehicle was the Indigo Manza with the 1.3 Multijet. I remember telling my father about the Tata - Fiat JV and pleaded him to get the Fiat Linea but he opted for the Manza cause of service network in tier 2 towns. That engine was absolutely fantastic but the car's handling or the drive experience was just blah. It was a great car to be chauffeur driven than driving it yourself. My longest trip ever on it was from Pune to Chennai and then to Bangalore to attend Metallica's concert and then back to Pune. It was spacious where in that car was like our 2nd home for a week. Spacious. About 14 years old, did about 3.1 lakh KMs before it's engine gave up. It was the most premium experience car for us with features and everything for almost a decade though we had the Fiesta EX from 2006. And that time, I used to think why can't the Fiesta have that 1.3 Multijet engine instead of the 1.4 durotorq (Though I must say that the durotorq was a gem in it's own ways) Tata has come a long long way since then. 10 to 15 years back, a discussion on Nexon EV for instance? I don't think so.
