For note. ALLthe "Evolution....." songs are done in one take start to finish. They generally record three or four times and pick the best, but they are not cut together. Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America's Got Talent as non-competitors a couple of years after that. The members are Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five-to-six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range); Kirstin "Kirstie" Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); Mitch Grassi (a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world-class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre-med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZfaq, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga's "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC-based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi's performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZfaq videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello-Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re-arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five-piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZfaq), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn't think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZfaq, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super-viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony's top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best-selling genre), and have had multi-platinum album sales, sold-out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) was brought in as the new bass singer in early 2018. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.

All the "Evolution" MVs are amazing. You also might like "Havana" and "Gold". Well, anything that Pentatonix does is worth hearing.

If you enjoy the mashups like this, I'd definitely recommend their "Evolution of Michael Jackson" and Daft Punk (they won a Grammy for this one) videos. They have all kinds of amazing vocal arrangements - some of my favorites are Hallelujah, The Prayer, and some of their original songs like "Can't Sleep Love," "Love Again," and Sing. I had to smile when you said they were so good it made you sick. They were on a singing competition show when they first formed in 2011, and one of the judges was Shawn Stockman from Boyz2Men. After one of their performances, he had a funny look on his face, and he said they make you "have an ugly face .. like it makes you sick". We've all had that face and that "this can't be real" moment with them. Check out Imagine, Gold, and New Rules/Are You That Somebody. In the last one, you'll see a new face - Matt Sallee, who replaced the bass, Avi Kaplan, bottom left in this video with the beard and beanie. Avi left in 2017 to do less touring and more of his own music, all on good terms. That's the only change in members. So all videos before 2017 have Avi, and all after then have Matt on bass, and the other 4 are the same since they began. Looking forward to more PTX reactions.

LOL! Scott is the king of runs, it's insane. Anyway, welcome to PTX! They have been together for over a decade, and this one is a very early video, so it might be a nice way to start your journey to jump forward in time to more recent evolution videos in the same format. I suggest either "Evolution of Rihanna" or "Evolution of Ariana Grande," or from about the middle of their decade, "Evolution of Michael Jackson." Two quick important facts you'll need to know. Mitch (on the left) and Kirstie change up their look drastically (and I mean drastically) over the years, but it's always them. Avi (the bass bottom left) left amicably in 2017 and was replaced by Matt, so you will see both of them as you navigate through the catalog, but that is the only personnel change in the group, the other four remain the same. Avi continued with a solo career, and there is a breakout group of just Scott and Mitch called Superfruit (they did a Beyonce medley, too, and a cover of "Feeling Myself" so you might want to check those out), plus they all have solo projects on the side (Mitch's is under the name "Messer"). All of it is wonderful, so if you love them, you'll be at this for awhile, and we are HERE FOR IT! You are a great reactor, so I Can. Not. Wait!

They won the sing off competition in 2011. their members are scott (blond guy), mitch (black hair), kirsty (female), avi (bearded guy), and kevin (beat boxer). In 2017 avi left the group for personal reasons in good terms and they added matt. Pentatonix is 100% acapella although they've made a few videos with instruments which u will see in their performances. They've won 3 grammys for their performances of daft punk, dance of the sugar plum fairies, and jolene w/ dolly parton. They have so many videos..too many to list but i will list a few. In addition to the 3 i already mentioned...mad world, royals, the prayer, radioactive, 90's dance medley, sounds of silence, problem, perfume medley, butter x dynamite, a little space featuring ateez, bohemian rhapsody (THE FINEST COVER OF THAT CLASSIC ROCK SONG), wizard of ahhs (a montage of 17 pop songs arranged to tell the classic story of the wizard of oz), 12 days of christmas, little drummer boy, carol of the bells, you're a mean one mr. grinch, can you feel the love tonite, shallow and so many more. some originals include sing, love again, happy now, love me when i dont, coffee in bed, the lucky ones, be my eyes, never gonna cry again. During the height of the pandemic they released an entire album called "at home" which was recorded entirely in their own homes seperately on zoom and then mixed in the studio. songs include home, blinding lights, dreams, when the party's over, and break my heart. Great reaction. Their evolution videos are great for showcasing their "one take" talents. Thier studio produced songs, both covers and originals, showcase their voices even better. The best part of this is that as incredible as they are here, it only gets better. When you start getting into their really polished stuff, it's a whole new ballgame. Daft Punk, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Hallelujah are probably the three early songs I'd recommend to get a sense of what all they can do. Then if you want to dive into their more recent work, I'd say check out Coffee in Bed, Attention, and Be My Eyes. Looking forward to seeing more of your journey.
