@Caitydubbelyew3 жыл бұрын
It’s amazing how universal hymns are, that someone from the US can sing them, and people as far afield as Denmark and South Africa recognize them, though that’s the point of many of the songs. Hymns and pieces of church music have often been set to popular tunes for the express reason that it’s music that lots of people know. I’m actually less familiar with the modern pieces (I didn’t recognize any of the ones written in the last 20 years), but I’m not surprised by that since most of the church music I sing now is for my local cathedral. I did have to pause a couple of times to try and figure out which piece was what, because I know them in a bunch of different languages.
@johannebrsted64953 жыл бұрын
@@Caitydubbelyew I had trouble with the newer ones, too. As for the universal quality of hymns, that is quite natural: people emigrating from Europe brought their culture with them, and part of that culture was religion.

What most people don't know is that many of the hymns that came from the reformation period to the early 20th century where set to tunes of popular drinking songs.
