It’s not the guitar but the style that makes it Jazz, Semi Acoustic guitars are a throwback to the pre amplified period personally I prefer semi acoustic sounds but the Telecaster is quite popular using Flat-wound strings makes the most difference I have found.

@aural_supremacy it could also be the pickups and even which side of the pick (in your hand) that you use. My old teacher used a schecter because he also liked metal, but he studied jazz in university.

Jackson with locking nut, floyd rose, 24 frets, I'm waiting for this guy to start shredding some heavy metal the whole time, thinking it's a very elaborate troll. But nope, that dude is a genuine jazz player.

Wow, what a well executed lesson. It has been about 12 years since I've read new music, and only on piano. I've never read music while playing guitar (other than tabs), but with this lesson, I can clearly understand. Your clear, calm cadence and easy-to-follow notation on screen has alleviated a level of trepidation I had about stepping into jazz guitar. I'm excited to learn more from you. You well deserve a subscription. Cheers to you!

I have to disagree with the people who like this guitar tone for jazz. Sounds thin all the time and harsh on the chords. That said, this is a pretty awesome video anyway 👍

It's amazing how you can get a convincing jazz sound out of any guitar, even the most unlikely, it seems! The sound is 99% in your hands, I'm guessing, but I have to ask the standard questions anyway: Are you using flat wound strings? What kind of picks? Mic'ing an app or going direct with an amp sim? Any random advice for those of us without standard jazz guitars to get a tone like yours for recording?

Is there a quick way to figure out what different chords work for a particular lick as is, like some Roman numeral thing. Or is it really just look at the notes and figure out other chords that use those chord tones?

Dude, you are going nowhere with your lines. No firm melodic context was ever established, of which should develops until it reaches a climax and all that. You were doing random chromatic enclosures that didn^t make sense all the time, seemingly to give yourself time to think of where to go next. The whole video was static, except for a few moments here and there. Shift your focus on the fretboard knowledge, and just play some damn melodies with chord tones, and establish some actual motifs! Just sayin`
