The first game Link was able to fall in Lava was Adventure of Link and pretty much was in almost ever Legend of Zelda game ever since!

In Triforce Heroes, there are actually two types of lava: the red lava where you just bounce off and the yellow lava where you sink.

Apparently Wind Waker didn't sell too well in the west, so the developers went for a Zelda game with a more mature look and serious tone so that it would sell better as that was what players wanted. I guess that's why the death was very realistic. The whole game felt realistic.

Twilight Princess is by far the most heart-wrenching one because not only does he slowly sink into the lava, the pain in his screams and the slight movement of his arm trying to reach out. You can also hear the sizzle and boiling of his clothes and skin. Not a great way to go at all. Out of all kinds of deaths within the Zelda series I believe being cooked alive in an instant with no time to react is truly terrifying. TP's more realistic graphical approach brings it closer to home for us in the actual world.

8:02 - It's interesting that with all the modern graphics and animation, Toon Link's death is still way less disturbing than Simba's death on the SNES/Genesis Lion King game. Now that one nailed the way life was squeezed out of that little kid's eyes.
