Metal Mario was probably a robot that was a failed clone of Mario, and he probably was made a a replacement for when Mario was away. He probably ended up just choosing his own path and kind of became associated with Mario as Mario also had the metal cap power up. But hey, that’s just a theory.

For the Mario Kart version of Metal Mario, yeah this could apply pretty well, but in the context of mainline games like SM64 and SMBW it’s simply just a metal suit that protects you from suffocation.

I love how they gave metal mario a whole new purpose in Wonder. Electrifying him made him light up the dark stage and attract coins. It was something new for a power up that hadn’t been seen in years
