MK1: Aaaah, a classic. A simple classic. In terms of presentation, it's just kinda OK by today's standards. But in terms of character, there is lots of it. This is where Scorpion reveals his true colours as a broken wreck of a man that did not manage to find peace in death and came back to unleash all the wrath he witheld indide him. The little explosion that disintegrates the opponent's flesh is kinda neat. MK2: A nice updated version. The exploding skeleton and the victim screaming are amusing. The victim screaming after being turned to a skeleton is kinda nonsensical, but in a charming way. MK3: Ah, a perfect update. We get the opponent's horrified scream as they see Scorpion reveal his true colours and as he is upon to unleash his wrath, which gives Scorpion a bit more of a presense and has a more logical flow. Also, the scream fits the comical tone a lot of the Fatalities had back then, although it is debatable if they went a bit too far and if it fits with MK3's story and aesthetic. Then the opponent turns to dust with a nice little animation. MK4: Insert "boss becomes playable character" meme, because the fatality became playable move and it looks very simple. I get that there were limitations the team had to deal with back then, but that really was an intentional decision they took and the move just feels so...generic and simple. There is the little detail of the opponent actually catching fire as they are hit, but that's a bare bones compliment. To be fair tho, I can't be mad at its inclusion. It definitely feels like an inevitability, although thankfully the franchise found ways around it in the future. There is also the Toasty fatality, but, due to this version of the fatality being an already almost unaltered pre-existing gameplay move where in gameplay Scorpion doesn't even reveal his skeleton face, this fatality just feels very weak and basic when unleashed. Thankfully, there is an additional animation of the opponent screaming and running around in circles which is fitting for the game's aesthetic and amusing enough to save this fatality from being the most boring version of Toasty. Shaolin Monks: The gameplay version of said attack has 2 versions (because unnecessary versions for a single attack existed even back then) the one version being a little fireball and the other a full-on fire-bath to the enemy, although the pixelated ground and the fact that the fire is actually animated as thick smoke take away from the awesome factor (admittedly enough, it would be hard for the designers to deal with the pixelated ground, since it already existed in the game). Admittedly, the animation of the attack does give it a good sense of weight and power (even tho I don't think that the attack needed ti feel heavy, just powerful was enough). I do like tho the amount of visible destruction it causes in its surroundings, it makes the already impactful attack feel even more impactful and powerful. The Fatality version of the move goes full-on cinematic and I love it. Sure, there is still pixelated ground and the opponent exploding feels a bit generic, but the build-up to the attack is all the money and even the fire is properly animated (heck, this also gives some good visual variety between the 3 versions of the move). MK vs DCU: Scorpion uses the attack again as a fatality only, thankfully. It's decent with its fair share of flaws. It starts out as a very thin layer of fire before becoming wider, the opponent merely responds with a little barely hearable yell, the fire just instantly covers the opponent's body and the burn effect is appreciated but not as impactful as it could be due to it being the exact same as the one in Scorpion's Hellfire gameplay move. Also, it's bit weird that Scorpion's takes out his entire face but only his mask is seen in his hand (although you could theorise that his human face is only visible with his mask) and that he does his victory pose by raising the hand that holds the mask and not the other free hand. MK9: It was perfect. Perfect. Everything down to the last minute details. Scorpion moves his head up and down to fully cover his opponent, there is a good death yell and great and fitting burn damage and it all is given enough time to sink. I can't wait to see how this gets to... (Injustice: Gods Among Us: This one does have a Toasty, but it debatably souldn't even count, for it is just a victory animation. It's well animated, although apparently Scorpion can now use it to open portals to the Netherrealm, which is actually somewhat consistent with his MK9 victory animation where he opens a portal to the Netherrealm with hos sword, which seems to imply that Scorpion can now use weapons and abilities of his to open portals to the Netherrealm.) MKX: OK, to be fair, due to what the fatalities have become, turning the simple Toasty into a Brutality makes sense and it now being a Brutality means that we can't just compare it on a 1:1 scale with the Fatality versions. Still tho we get fire that instantly covers the opponent and a model swap at the last second. Disappointing. Maybe the abrupt model swap, the super-fast fire and the fact that the skeleton staus intact are meant to be on the more comexic and wacky side, like in a lot of other Fatalities and Brutalities in the game, but the skeleton being burnt gives off opposite feels and the story and overall aesthetic of the game are so seriously presented that it does not work as well as it could have. MK11: 2 versions and Brutality yet again, folks. The first version is a simple fire blast and the second a longer fire blast with the addition of a badass Terminator-like walk. The MKX magma burns are, being just as cool and non-sensical as before, but this time they are more visible. Both versions have the addition of having a thermal X-Ray effect on Scorpion which does give them some more impact, but it also feels like unnecessary overcompesation and visually distracts from the Toasty which we were supposed to be looking at, something rhat is undesirable both as a spectator and as a player. Also, the enhanced version adds the nice detail of a bigger X-Ray, but the reason stops right at the upper thighs for some reason. Also, Scorpion unleashing the attack feels significantly less dynamic than the MK4 and Shaolin Monks gameplay versions, because Netherrealm does not want exaggeration or even basic stretch in gameplay animations. The Brutality version is good enough. The fire instantly covers the opponent, but luckily we get an actually good burn animation and effect. We also have a Brutality victory animation where Scorpion uses mini Toastes. You could argue that the mini Toastes feel unnecessary and unimpressive, especially after the Toasty Brutality, although honestly you could just say this for most victory animations and I am not particularly bothered by this. In fact, it is kinda fitting, since those victory animations are meant to be more quick and relaxing, if that makes any sense. Although I will agree that putting a move that is identified as Scorpion unleashing his rage as a fun and relaxing victory pose is a bit off-putting and ironically and unironically poetic. Something to note is that during none of those 4 cases does Scorpion remove his mask. Such a major staple of his character and it's just gone. I obviously get that because of gaming pacing, of all the different stuff the animators had to animate and of all the different models, some of whom just could not remove their faces, that some things would just be left, but again, some of the stuff that were animated, like the thermal X-Rays, were just not necessary and the time and resources that were given to them could be given at Scorpion removing his mask and limit that animation only at models and gameplay moments where it fits.
