The first time I played the Star Trek theme in orchestra, I got so choked up and teared up I couldn't see my music, so I improvised. ( I'm a trombonist). My conductor was so moved, that he stopped the rehearsal and told me to play what I just did again. My "psuedo-cadenza" was included in the final performance. That was 15 years ago, and I still get complimented on it.

Today I realized that the sequence of Star Trek melodies can be compared to the progression of themes for a single human lifetime. The Original Series begins with a youthful and energetic theme that suggests the ambition of a young Captain Kirk. The Next Generation conveys confidence and pride as the Federation has become very established in the galaxy. DS9 provides a powerful theme that seems to reflect on the experiences of not only the Federation, but also Benjamin Sisko's nonlinear memory of his own past suffering. A beautiful and wistful theme represents Voyager's Captain Janeway and her crew in their nostalgic longing for home while it also embraces Star Trek's original sense of adventure. Another extraordinary composition, Archer's Theme calls forth a mature sense of serenity and wisdom in a melody that rivals the elegance of Voyager's theme. On the other hand, Discovery seems to convey agitation and instability, suggesting a time of chaos and decline. Representing the twilight of a lifetime, Picard's evocative and sublime melody clearly conveys the melancholy of Jean-Luc Picard himself. The Original Series: Ambition The Next Generation: Pride Deep Space Nine: Reflection Voyager: Nostalgia Archer's Theme: Wisdom Discovery: Agitation Picard: Melancholy

What a fabulous interpretation of all the series. It is a magical melody, which not only evokes memories from the first time I saw Star Trek on television. It's been just over 50 years of my existence. And each chapter, each new movie of the Star Trek saga; It's a new beginning, a new adventure and I vehemently hope for new episodes and movies of Star Trek. Inspire new young people around the world. To be astronauts, astrobiologists, astrophysicists and other careers related to our universe, knowing that the life and happiness of every human being; It is beyond the stars. Good luck to all who see themselves reflected in some way in characters like Mr. Spock, or Captain James Kirk, or communications officer Ohara. The future is now. Thanks for everything. I'm pretty sure Star Trek saved me. I watched bits and bobs on the TV when I was a kid. Janeway, the Doctor and Neelix always made me feel entertained; With a lot of wisdom sprinkled in. Flash forward 20 or so years, and I realize I never really saw the show. So I did. Voyager, then N.G, and after that DS9. I was studying at the time, so evenings were uneventful.. but I had TREK. So many good life lessons, so much heart. Can't believe I missed it the first time around. Now I know. Live long and prosper!

@@mami3427 I was a baby when TOS first aired, but my mother watched it and chances are I was in the room as well. By about ten years later, it was a Saturday morning show (after cartoons) and my father watched it before we made the weekly shopping trip. So I, reluctantly at first, watched it with him, eventually coming to love the show. So there is a valid reason to assume that most TOS fans are 50+ years old by now. But! Through the magic of the Internet (and video sales and rental stores, and ongoing syndicated airings), younger generations have been exposed as well. My sister once made a TOS reference to her daughter (currently about age 15, then, probably about age 10)… being a rather inquisitive child, my niece insisted on seeing an episode of this show her mother had referenced. So they watched an episode via some streaming service and my niece was hooked. I believe Mr Spock is her favorite
@judithnelson1581
@judithnelson1581 2 жыл бұрын
@@mami3427 l've watched and enjoyed each series from TOS through Enterprise. They have been inspiring, high points in my life. Always love classical orchestral music so Faith of the Heart was initially jarring, but I came to appreciate it because of the lyrics and recognized the tone was meant to show the spirit, courage, isolation, and audacity of early explorers. Successive season's arrangements were equivocating mistakes. TOS began as I started middle school so its theme always has the most thrilling impact. I found that TOS enhanced the beauty of the starry night sky with mystery and optimism. Each series had weak points. The near weekly Capt. Kirk romance became irksome. TNG started with weak scripts, then improved. Voyager failed to follow through with the Maqui tension and character development of Chakotay, and I loved Seven of Nine's character arc despite the producers suffocating her in a constricting bodysuit. Eventually my interest in Enterprise faded and I stopped watching. Perhaps because Deep Space Nine jettisoned self-contained episodic story treatment and had Star Fleet crew intermeshed with other humans and species, it has blinded me to its failings; it remains my top favorite of the 5 series.

I just want to point out that those officers didn’t have to die if it wasn’t for the complete and total incompetence of starfleet in that era. Starfleet was overconfident and had essentially no defenses from threats even though they knew of several, including the borg, and the dominion during the Cold War, but their best response was to pull the defiant, a pretty terribly designed ship out of mothballs, make one decently designed ship, and two overpriced and not at all practical designs, and the last three were only entering service after the war. Also ds9 is bad.

I remember when Star Trek had the first black protagonist or female captain protagonist, as well as so many various topics covered by the TV episodes. Who knew at that time that they were already ahead of their time in covering all these social issues but they didn't make it an issue, they just portrayed things in a normal and customary way.

As a child born in the mid 1960s, I was somehow blissfully unaware of the social turbulence happening in the real world at the time and simply assumed that large cities were as peacefully integrated as seen on Sesame Street and the humans on Star Trek.

While Janeway was the 1st female captain in a series, there is a cameo of an African American female captain of a starship at the beginning of Star Trek IV. Nice to see how much the Starfleet changed between the end of the Original Series on Kirk's Enterprise & Star Trek IV. The series finale of TOS was all about a female Starfleet officer going insane due to the rule that females are not allowed to be starship captains. People tend to view Trek in an alternate light in how they portrayed social progress. Roddenberry was VERY inconsistent at it. In BALANCE OF TERROR of the TOS, RACISM was very much a part of Starfleet, and still existed in Star Trek VI. Bu magically, by the time of TNG, Roddenberry decided females captains were okay & everyone in Starfleet is PERFECT without conflict or racism. While I LOVE how TOS evolved, when they changed from The Cage with a female First Officer to the TOS with Spock as 1st officer, the network was FINE with keeping the female 1st officer but t was RODDEBERRY who decided to scrap her & promote Spock instead. So, even in the late 60s, the NETWORK had NO PROBLEM with a WOMAN in a command position . There is also a PR story Roddenberry said - that may or may not be true - about keeping Uhura around but HE claims the network says a BLACK female can NEVER be in command of the ship. I find that questionable since they were fine with a WHITE female in command. But the 60s was probably more RACIST than SEXIST, so who knows!? Oh well, people like to think of Trek's optimistic non-racists, non-sexist, perfect humans in the TNG era instead of the reality of TOS. And that's fine. Facts & reality aside, Just sayin.

I started with the original Star Trek. As an adult, working two full time jobs, I missed most of Enterprise and only saw the last few seasons of The Next Generation. Thanks to a friend who is also a Trekkie, I was able to watch Voyager and Deep Space Nine (only missed the last episode) on VCR tapes. I watch Discovery and Picard. Looking forward to Strange New Worlds. I have seen all but the last movies as well . I was 10 years old when the original started, I have used Star Trek storylines for the last 50 years as a way to educate ignorant ( not the same as stupid or dumb) people who can ONLY see their point of view. Star Trek is excellent at showing two or more perspectives on the same facts. It has been extremely helpful in my two careers the required working with people with strongly opposing view points and I was able to mediate largely because I LOVE the Star Trek Universe.
