For real, I know "dark and gritty" is a meme in the beta community, but IMO the suppression field is SO much darker as a concept then child labor. I know child slaves is very "oh wow, very nightmare" but the fact that in retail the generation you see was supposed to be the LAST generation, I feel is just much more disturbing because at least child slaves can be freed, but the last generation? Knowing that every citizen turned to the combine or killed had no replacement? its like every death is just one more -1 to humanity's shrinking population.

The feeling I get from the suppression field is hopelessness - borderline nihilism. It’s like you said, every death humanity suffers is permanent and the populous is just ever decreasing, with no way to recover those losses. Eventually, they’ll just go extinct. well, atleast until the orange man puts a stop to that with his crowbar

@@TM__1566 HL2 Beta is comically dark in that regard. "Hey how do we convey the world is bleak?" -"Uhhh they replaced the air with poison and there are child slaves and everything is literally dark" Meanwhile, retail HL2 is just bleak in a more realistic sense. People can survive just fine, but they can't LIVE. And what makes this worse is that its world is actually uncomfortably close to how dictatorships in certain countries were like (and still are). You don't need for everyone to wear gas masks in order to make their lives miserable.

I'd say there's a bit of a larger difference than just child slavery. It's clear Valve had different intentions for suppressing humanity. Beta seems to have more methods that came out of 1984 (Manhack arcade, complete global air pollution, etc.), while retail just focuses on keeping the last generation of humans alive until they aren't. I don't mind the subtlety Valve went for, but it doesn't disturb me imo. Maybe the uncertainty of humanity isn't my thing. But the monotonous brain-rot society that's bound to stay for years is what personally gets me. If Valve really did take some influences from 1984 then I could not imagine some of the horrid living conditions if Valve had more time to flesh out the beta. I wrote this while extremely tired so hopefully it's understandable.

I wish Half-Life 2 and its episodes would have different normal zombie variants, because the normal zombie is the tan shirted refugee. It would be cool if there was citizen variant, rebel variant and medic variant. I think there's an addon for Gmod about this.

Actually there is addon for Gmod. It's called "Sabre-aN's Headcrab Zombie Mod". Also there is "Sabrean's Headcrab Zombie Mod Hexed Model Pack", but I'm not sure if it's needed.

7:25 I have no doubt in my mind that this map was supposed to be used as reference for Combine propaganda, in the TF2 leak we learned that the achievement icons were made by drawing over references made using the mercenary models, and that would've most likely been the case for this odd map, but because Breen's suit gives off more of a rich snob vibe as opposed to a bastard politican, it's probably why his head model is attached to Gman's body, and along with the children it was probably meant to make Breen look like someone that cares for earth's children, like you know, business men do with the environment

7:30 originally, Gman's head was gonna be used on Breen because one of the valve artist or something, so there's a chance the same might have been wice versa (Breen's head on Gman's body) or just like you said, a placeholder

The videos from the 2002 Beta didn't simply resurfaced on the internet! They were actually given away by Valve themselves for anyone who pre-ordered the game! I have these discs at home, somewhere. I used to show and bother everybody I could to watch those videos over and over with me, because it was just unbelievable how amazing everything looked and how amazing of a technological jump the game was at the time.

2:09 This screenshot is odd. It looks like it came shortly after the leak but also before it, Victor Antonov’s style of the Combine architecture is slightly showing here. I’m blanking on the “Mr. Friendly” concept artist who deserves more credit for designing 90% of HL and HL2. But I think Valve went for a bolder look after the leak probably to really separate the game from what was designed previously. Anyone else know more?

Considering how much Portal 1 reused HL2 assets, is it possible that Chell's jumpsuit was at least inspired by the orange citizen gear? Also, for the future, it'd be nice if you could show side-by-side comparisons between models. Just showing the previous one and then the new one next to it would be great. Because half of these looked identical to me at first glance.

The meshes for the early 2003 citizen clothes _(and I think)_ the orange collar citizen clothes got leaked recently, and people have been able to make more accurate restorations.

I feel like we need a full beta release in line with the base HL2, like a beta and HL2 campaign being complete. It’ll pay respects to both the game and beta so it isn’t forgotten as well leads to more HL2 and HL mods.

The docks screenshot is one of my favorite old pieces from the game. It was just so atmospheric, not to mention that the graphics were crazy good there somehow, considering its age. From what I gather, that was going to be part of the coast at some point. And, yes, well aware that HL2 was originally meant to show up at E3 2002, but Valve apparently pulled out in the last moment because they weren't satisfied with the game. Didn't help that the game would leak along with the WC map pack a year later, which truly lit up the fire under Valve's ass as up until that point they insisted the game was on schedule and will release in the fall of that year - only for the build to be clear proof of the contrary, with an unfinished and unstable engine, and not a single finalized level to be seen. It's amazing how much the game improved in a year and a half, which frankly, as unfortunate as it may have been for everyone involved, is perhaps good that the leak happened. I personally doubt the game would have been as good as it ended up being without the leak, as now everyone knew Valve lied to their face with a smile. They couldn't screw up a second time. It's similarly amazing just how many old assets dropped last year, so many pieces of the puzzle in the hands on the community now. That being said, there is a chance there probably won't be any more dumps in the future, as some of the community's biggest contributors have released all that they had available last year and at the start of this one. Unless more people from outside and former developers release more after their NDA expires, this is the best it gets.

@@ShadowSumac The only problem is that during those years not a whole lot of content was made. This was more of an era of concepts, story experiments, and prototyping. If we are to get more content from the earliest days of development, there probably won't be much of it.

@@proletarianrise10 We don't know it for sure. We know, from the WC Mappack and texture transition file, that all major locations from "hyper" era (1999-2000) were prototyped to some degree. It would be more than enough to satisfy curiosity about earliest stages of development of HL2. I mean, earliest version of City 17 and Hyperborea, not to mention elusive Kraken Base and Weather Control, which we have like 0 materials about. Sounds like a majestic haul to me, even if there were only like 3-4 maps per location.

@@ShadowSumac I suppose I can see the point, I just don't expect much anyway, since we'd have to count on outside sources to get more stuff, as all resources from inside the community have been exhausted to my knowledge. PelPix released all that she had left early this year, for instance. But, Kraken and Weather Control are in fact elusive, since outside of the book, the former had like one or two maps in the mappack, fairly early works at that, while the latter has virtually no known content released. We also don't know much about how Kraken and WC were actually going to play like, as the book doesn't provide a lot of details. I'm curious what WC looked like in the earliest maps, assuming they exist.

@@proletarianrise10 Something is better than nothing, either way. I'd take even extremely basic WCS map over, well, nothing. At least it can serve as a beginning of the styleguide. Both Kraken Base and WCS had maps - we know it for a fact: WC Mappack has folders for those locations. We know names of developers who worked on them (and we know they DID work on them) and we have file outright mentioning specific textures for those maps for specific locations. What we have in WC Mappack is very incomplete. As for what we have in WC Mappack and a Leak - they are obviously incomplete. For example: we don't have earliest versions of Citadel from 2000, a lot of models, like earliest Combine Soldiers, we know there was a model for an Antlion King and more or less realized Sacktick enemy, so there are plenty of materials missing. And a lot of maps are missing as well, even from later stages of development. All in all HL2 Beta is an amazing treasure trove, but its far from complete.

There's literally tons of them nowadays, albeit none of them finished yet. Dark Interval, Coterminus, and Raising the Bar Redux are the highest quality recreations available currently. There are also a bunch of older mods, but their quality is nowhere near as high, including Missing Information, Cremation, and Insolence.

@@MacaqueStinx Yes, it is, and features a recreated Borealis as its main selling point, built off of various levels from the WC map pack, polished and with proper gameplay added. It's also effectively dead, as after the failed launch on Steam, all signs indicate that the team lost interest and it just died a quiet death. Ready to be proven wrong any time, if more releases do see the daylight, but there are simply no signs pointing in that direction, rather, it's the opposite. MI was amazing for its time, there's no doubt about that. But frankly, we simply have much better mods available nowadays. DI Part 2 will hopefully release this year and the developers say Part 2 will be quite lengthy if all goes well, and RTBR Division 3 is also well into development now, following Div 2's release last Chrismas. We *might* hear more about CT this year as well, and the beta themed mod Outcast (not to be confused with a recreation, because it isn't. It's goals are entirely different from the rest of the crowd).

@@MacaqueStinx Same. It's still one of my favorite recreations, too. Just too bad it was killed off, but as I said, what we have nowadays is simply magnitudes better. For all its things it got right, it simply didn't do nearly enough on its own, everything was based off of existing assets, and the Hyperborea's layout is a clear indication of this, it's pretty easy to get lost sometimes. Its recreated weapons were also neat. But the Steam release was never going to make it through, because MI was based off of leaked content directly, something that even decades later, Valve isn't happy about. It is true that DI and RTBR also use *some* leaked content, but nowhere near as much and as liberally as it does (DI is only limiting itself to bits which are fine and fit into the mod, for instance), and CT only uses leaked content as reference, but nothing is being used or based off directly. Had MI chosen a different route, perhaps its situation would be better these days, but its approach mostly sealed its fate, as after the failure of Steam, the team lost its interest. I miss SMOD as well, easily one of the best mods the community has ever pumped. Just too bad that after 40a it died as well, and as far as I'm aware, it's source is now also considered lost, prompting the creation of reverse-engineered efforts. It was way ahead of its time, and a testament to just how good HL2's gameplay really is with various enhancements, and a crazy arsenal, plus gore cranked all the way to 11.

4:13 I don't know how the leak would've affected the design in any way. I imagine they just changed it because they wanted it to look better. 6:32 HL: Alyx does reuse this concept. In the opening of the game, you can see green-suited engineers riding atop the construction striders. There's also yellow-suited hazmat workers, but you never encounter any alive. 7:47 I can't tell if it's just because of the lighting, but the citizen to the far right of the group looks headless.

The image with Breen and the kids looks like propaganda to me, may have been one of his Breencasts, where he talks about the child workforce and how they are furthering the human cause from an early age or something. You know how it goes with him. The suppression field must have been one of those "a wizard did it" explanations they came up with last second to remove the kids from the game after they had already publicized it, I actually like it, it makes sense to me, the Combine were systematically comitting genocide on humanity by turning us into machine-like things, having us kill each other and preventing us from creating another generation. The one thing I wish Valve did differently would be to actually show us where that suppression field is coming from, like a machine or something that we could glimpse, just to tie it all together. Given how abstract and brutalist Combine technology can be, maybe we _have_ seen the suppression field during our trip to the citadel, we just couldn't tell it apart from all of the hard edged monoliths all over the place.

The cut worker's normal and Borealis variations both use the face texture from male_07! Only difference is that it's more faithful to the original man the face texture is from, having the odd-looking mustache and the same hairstyle as him.

The blue citizen jumpsuits were inspired by the movie 1984. Also Breen's face was modelled after O'Brien, the antagonist of 1984 I just realized now even their names are similar

i would have been cool to see some sort of worker type in the retail game and maybe some levels where you could see them doing weapon parts for combine or something else that would give more reasons for the universal union to keep them alive

8:10 this map was likely a mock-up made by valve for the press to use. its unlikely that a scene like this was ever actually intended for the game.

4:10 The leak had nothing to do with the cutting of content in 2003; most of the files were content that was already scrapped. Combine OverWiki states: “The game didn't run on his computer, so he made some code changes to get it to run in a basic form. He only had the main development "trunk" of the game. They had many developed branches that he couldn't even begin to check them all out.” Gembe didn’t have the entire HL2 development repo, only the bases of it, and many of the nitty gritty models you see would get leaked much later, like the water cooler from the recent 2022 repo drop.

Pretty close but there's some things that are off. 1. Gasmask citizens were out by mid-2001. This is evidenced by the fact that there are new citizen models referenced in 2001 maps (For example, aaron\c17_01_17.vmf has male2.mdl) 2. Samuel's model is not found in wastelandcitizen, he is just in the root models folder. 3. We actually *DO* have the orange collar model, but the fault for this model not being very known about falls on me. See, the model is, for some reason, sitting in the smd file for the breen bust model in the recent leaks. People tried to convince me that it came from the .max file, so I ask a peer who actually HAD the max files for HL2 to confirm, and they said that it wasn't, so I pushed back on the claim that this model was real for quite some time because they refused to admit that it was just from the smd. Honesty would have saved a whole lot of people a whole lot of stress here, but hindsight is 20/20, as they say. 4. We have the 2002 blue/green citizens now, which is pretty neat. There was only one male model with the mesh, but I remade the whole citizen lineup off of it a little while back. It's cool stuff, I actually love this model version. 5. We have the e3 2004 model now as well, thanks to the recent leaks. Frankly, the community's recreations were nearly one-to-one anyway, but it's neat to have the actual model. Fun fact, the corpse texture actually uses different pants and shoe textures than the original version. Couldn't tell you why, it's rather bizarre. 6. There is one more version of the citizens that existed between the e3 2004 model and the final model: In the famous blue eyed metrocop concept art, you can see citizens in the background that appear to be a hybrid between the E3 model and the final model. They no longer have the corsets on their backs, and the front of their shirts seem to be like retail. However, they still have the older pants, as evidenced by the back pockets, some of them still wear the fingerless gloves, and their backs still have the same wrinkles as the e3 counter-part. That's about all I got. Nice video.

while i honestly love all the versions and even think some look better than what we got, but frankly i dont think any fit the theme quite like the final version. the idea of everybody having to walk around in these full denim outfits, which while uncomfortable they lasted long and could be produced cheaply with, really fits the whole oppressive utilitarian feeling. i mean, hell, first thing people seem to do when they get to the wasteland is take the jacket off, so i doubt its that comfortable.

To be honest I find nothing off feeling about that people standing on the ship photo. If you think about it, the photo shows hope if nothing else. An almost black and white picture of abandoned and not in use ships, with people waving at the camera man, implying that this might have been a cut location in the game, where you would board a ship (somehow avoiding combine). Feels pretty "cheerful in times of despair" kind of way.

Imagine what gmod videos and other HL2 related machinimas would have been like if HL2 kept the 2001 era style...(pretty different in looks for sure obviousley). Anyway, the biggest flaw with the gasmask design is that because of the citizens quite literally wearing a gasmask, you would have barely been able to tell a difference between a citizen's model and another's, thus probably not letting male_07 become popular if they kept those designs.
