An animated timeline showing how the London Underground started in 1863, and then grew over the years to present day. It shows how the lines were first created and how the Circle Line and Hammersmith & City Line were originally part of the Metropolitan, and District Railways.
This animation is just the London Underground and does not include the DLR, Overground.
The stations in the Hounslow area are really tricky to show (Hounslow Town opened in 1883, closed in 1886, then had a period when it was open again between 1903 and 1909).
The Northern City Line was not originally part of the Northern Line but is shown here in black, as it did later become part of the Northern Line, and appeared on carriage maps of Northern Line trains.

The payback comes to the city and the operating companies through the longer term economic benefits (better faster rail services = fewer cars = less gridlock = better air = more people want to live there = greater spending and taxes raised), and through the revenues raised both directly from fares and from the rates on shops that want to base themselves at the stations, and rents from businesses that want to be based near or over them to be attractive to commuting workers. London's got an amazing public transport infrastructure, there's so many ways to get around and options at each station. Makes for a very flexible and mobile city.

Great video. Congratulations. Some extra info about the underground if you don't mind. The Underground network was a mix of private companies until its nationalization in 1933. The first cut and cover lines were created in a period of seven years. The subsurface, cut and cover lines are: Metropolitan line 1863 electrified in 1905. Hammersmith & City line 1864 electrified in 1906. The pneumatic line Waterloo and Whitehall Railway 1865-1867 failed financially. District line 1868 electrified in 1905, originally Metropolitan district railway. Circle line 1871 electrified in 1905, originally two separate lines that joined in 1949. For a period of at least three decades these lines were using steam trains. After 1906 all the Underground network with the subsurface and deep-level lines was electrified and steam was a thing of the past. Until then steam trains were used for 42 years in the Underground. Due to the smoke the lines had and still have many open to the air spaces. So they are not true deep-level Underground lines. Also even today on pavements can been seen the little holes the smoke was escaping. These holes are covered with thick glass today and are letting light to pass. The newest lines Jubille 1979 and Victoria 1968 are much younger than the next older Piccadilly 1906 and Bakerloo 1906 lines which were started both in 1906. For 62 years no new Underground lines were created. Instead older ones were extended constantly. The Metropolitan line 1863 had gas lighting units inside its carriages in order to be friendly and safe to the ladies. The Central Line was the first underground railway to have the station platforms illuminated electrically. All the platforms were lit by Crompton automatic electric arc lamps. During 1950's the wages of London Underground were very low and it was unfavorable by workers. So London Underground decided to massively employ immigrants from the Caribbean islands, India and Pakistan. Until late 1970's smoking was permitted inside the carriages of the underground. Until 1980's the Underground was full of advertisements for cigarettes.

It seems there's a lot of duplication of lines due to many companies. Imagine there is no underground, and you are the designer, knowing all the current and planned stations, how would your tube map look if there were no competing rail companies. Would you adopt a circular pattern, a starburst radiating out from a centre, or a spiderweb with radials and circles (extra points if you draw it :D ) You may add stations not even served, and may enlist the help of the tube map guy if you decide to draw it.

I think that whilst circular patterns are nice, you need to focus on the commuting aspect, so mine would focus on direct routes from suburbs and perhaps a couple of circular routes in the city centre

Masoarian, what? The percentage of how many good ideas someone has has no correlation whatsoever with the ability to navigate through a Tube station.

When you are there, it is actually pretty easy. Just remember the color your home/hotel is on and the color of where you want to go (and of course the station names of both). From there on it is pretty easy navigating as all lines eventually cross each other somewhere (correct me if I'm wrong) and they have written on the wall before the platforms which stations come next. If it is not on it, then turn the other way because it will surely be on there. Pretty easy system, even non-natives will get when they use it.

Is there a version without the camera pans? This is great work, but the angle changes are unnessessary, distracting, and even disorienting. I get the urge to make it dynamic, but it's contrary to the entire purpose of the video. Reminds me a bit of how The Day Today took the piss out of news graphics, but minus the irony. (Sorry!)

On our visit to Dublin, me and my girlfriend had a train ride to Dalkey Station, for a walk to Killiney Station, we think it is the best bit of Dublin because of the self build houses, the forest, the hillside view towards the Wicklow Mountains and beach. At night we explored a bit on the 2 trams for the nightlife.
