First person to get a patent for the telephone as Meucci did not have the funds to patent. Before the telephone exchange they practically functioned as a primitive intercom.

From 1930s to around 1970s, the regular black home dial phone did not change much. Incredible how long that design lasted. Imagine a design lasting 40 years today.

I know, I was stunned because when I saw that black dial phone from the 30s I thought that's what my grandparents had in their house when I was growing up 40 years later. I guess they always liked the style. Of course, they hadn't had phones in their homes till they married and then after the war got one with a party line.

PC Case. Most still use the tower design. Of course the look was "invented" in the late 1980s.

@@brotnjanin that's another good analogy. The PC tower design hasn't changed much fundamentally in around 30 years. The first pc cases from the 70s and early 80s were more like monitor stands.

The design lasted for 40 years because Bell Telephone was a monopoly. It wasn't until Bell was broken up by Congress in the 1980s that phones became more diverse in design.

I'm only 41, but we were using 1940's phones right up until the early 90s in our house. Endless hours trying to phone the doctor on a rotary phone...wow!, it really was old fashioned looking back now

My grandparents still had the 1884 phone in their house. I remember it in the 1970's, but I think it had been turned into some sort of intercom to call people upstairs. I remember playing around with it when I was a kid.

@@SRMC957 Hey one of my Grandma 👵 has a an old phone, Type Writer, 1960-2001 Gadgets, Computers and Radios. East Indian Company flag, British India Flangers and East Pakistan flag. Also has old coins, Money from the past and different countries. She has some kind of Music player to listen. An animal head in a wall, Old Teddy bears 🧸, Old Stairway with Glass in it and an indoor swimming pool when you enter the house.

As a design engineer I've worked in the telco industry designing NEBS compliant Central Office (CO) equipment. In 2020 I was at my parent house and was sleeping in a spare room where they had an old rotary phone from the 60's on a table. Out of curiosity I plugged the RJ45 jack into the wall and dialed (literally LOL) and called my cellphone. To my amazement IT WORKED! That is an old analog dialing system which sends off a set number of clicks with each turn of the dial which gets decoded at the CO and routed to the proper destination. Everything now is digital, but the phone companies are very big on compatibility and reliability and are loath to make drastic changes in the system. The old clicking analog router equipment would have been replaced decades ago but it appears someone decided to design the system to recognize the old routing signal from a rotary phone. I thought that was so cool using that to call a cellphone. I don't know how much longer that will work, perhaps it was limited to the carrier they were using. It brought back a lot of memories and its lot likely I will ever have that opportunity again.

3:51 now that is what you call a telephone, the 1949 black rotary phone. It had the best feel to it, the coolest sounds and with a long black chord it was perfect. They seem to also be popular in the late 80’s early 90’s.

The change to Touch Tone dialing during my youth was the biggest transformation. It sped up the pace of calling and reduced the likelihood of a wrong number.... And children could play Yankee Doodle on the phone and get somebody 2,000 miles away and make their parents rather perturbed.

Cellphones are way too costly here in Canada as of 2019! On our landline I can call anywhere in North America for the same flat rate and get calling overseas to Scotland for only 3 cents a minute. We also get it bundled with the Internet making it a better option.

4:42 I've seen that phone somewhere before. I think that was the old phone my grandma's hairdresser would let me play with when I was little. I think my mom had the Garfield phone as a teenager. Also I remember when I was 6 and my parents finally decided to get cordless phones (around 2004). I was so amazed by the fact that you could get the phone in the living room and take it to the bedroom to talk. When I was about 8, my parents decided to get me one for my room. It was pink and white and even came with letter stickers so I could put my name on it. I thought I was the coolest kid in school.

While the telephone itself is interesting the electromechanical switching systems that made dialed up connections possible is amazing. Terms like Step by Step, Panel and Crossbar identify technology that was the engineering marvel of the time. Floor after floor of equipment maintained by dozens of technicians to provide tens of thousands of connections through the average Central Office.

The first telephone I owned was a dial in handset I bought at Target on the clearance rack for $2 which I owned for 3 years but sometimes the phone would have static every now and then but it lasted until I gave it to charity. It did not have a back plate so I laid it down flat with a long phone jack connected to it. It was kinda like the one in 1968. 5:30

The Weston 500 is my preferred. There are national variations, like those used in UK and Italy by the national telecom BT and SIP, that were pretty nice too. The real problem with those phones - were not the phones, but the landlines themselves. Laid in trenches underground in the '50s, and minimally maintained for the next fifty years. They became noisy and unreliable in most places, especially in rural villages. When people tried to connect modems on those lines in the late '90s for dialup Internet, the problem exploded.

The first telephone call was made on March 10(my bday), 1876, by Alexander Graham Bell. Bell demonstrated his ability to "talk with electricity" by transmitting a call to his assistant, Thomas Watson. The first words transmitted were "Mr Watson, come here. I want to see you."
