I created this simulator with Processing 1.5.1. I probably should have mentioned that in the video.

I would argue that distances should be absolute, a creature that's really fast at going backwards could just be flipped around, instead of killed... I mean, your "worst" creature was actually the fastest out of them all, shame to lose such potential.

@@3_Circles Why must to predators always be towards the left? @Vleaso

@Zero Cool I can see by the tone you're setting with your comment that you didn't acknowledge my joke... Putting jokes aside, the main comment here still has a valid point, where it should be optimized for distance regardless of direction. Your comment makes sense; they go right because"that's how it works", but that doesn't necessarily mean that's how it _has_ to work. The point of that specific excercize is to see how far the creature can go in a certain amount of time. Limiting the direction isn't entirely ideal.
@Vleaso
@Vleaso 4 жыл бұрын

correct, together with a way to mirror the direction it would improve the early convergence by up to 2x.
@oscarsmith3942

I think this would have worked better if you flipped creatures that went backwards and used the absolute value of their distance. This would have given a bump in early stages to fast creatures that happened to be placed backwards.

You could square the distance and it would always be positive. This would however work against the goal of moving forward as it would reward failure. If the goal was to move to water and they went really fast away from water I do not think they would survive no matter how well they performed at the task of moving.

4:27 wait a minute, that's so genius, the randomness of the selection process preserves the 'ideas' that didn't work, or at least some of their features. That means that ideas (sorry I know they are not ideas of anyone, but they are ideas in their own right) that overall may have failed, are explored to their fullest and incorporated into anything that benefits from it. Nature is the true genius, I am always humbled by the incredible results nature achieves without ever having to think, that's genius on a whole different level...

For the people suggesting he keep or mirror the creatures moving backwards, you need to realize the movement-to-the-right is just a metaphor, the actual fitness test isn't important. He could have defined fitness as large size or largest number of nodes or heck even NOT moving, and the system would have evolved appropriate figures. Left/Right movement just represented moving away from or towards a particular 'fitness' measurement, his imaginary world defined it as moving right.

@@SavedByFaithInJesus Of course evolution has parameters. They're called the laws of physics. Also, the environmental circumstance heavily parameterizes the evolutionary process. How much radiation is there? How many resources are available? Which resources? How consistent is the environment? etc. All those parameters will affect how evolution takes place (ex. the more unstable/rapidly changing the environment is, the more evolution will select for creatures that undergo larger mutations).

Great simulation. Funny how many people in the comments don't realise that evolution can happen in any environment (including 2D CG ones where there is shark infested custard to the left), not just ones that have the same rules and requirements as planet earth.
@cortster12
@cortster12 7 жыл бұрын
Becuase most people don't realize that evolution is based on very simple rules that pretty much anyone can understand if they just look it up. They think it's some magical biological process that makes animals. Most likely why so many creationists don't believe in evolution. Because they don't understand that it's not a process that life does, it's a consequence of how life functions.

Magic is based on very simple rules that anyone can look up. Real DNA doesn't map one-for-one into functioning systems. Like actual software code, most possible programs are non-functioning nonsense - it takes a brain able to heuristically explore the expression space and match up with a larger design/plan that is kept in longer term memory. Evolution proposes the removal of the long term memory/design, and the heuristic search depth to be reduced to one step, and then claims that that process is computationally sufficient produce code no human mind in history has been able to even conceive of.

Why don't you flip the ones that go backwards? and do an abs() distance from the beginning?

Topheye I suppose it wouldnt be "natural evolution" that way. And he set the (somewhat arbitary) objective to "go right" as something certain because it is easier to observe.

I have a question; Is there a way to edit the code so that I can prevent an S33 takeover (I have to run the non-"improved" version because in a step-by-step gen it freezes after completing creature #307's video, and if I skip it it freezes when it loads the creature's videos of their performance), or better, abolish S33's existence entirely? Edit: Forgot to mention, basically every time I run the simulator S33 takes over at the beginning after S45 grows with S44, S45, S56 and S57 holding on for dear life and mainly S45 and S56/S57 making a brief comeback but with S33 still existing it takes over again. That's how the simulator runs every time.
