Remembered by Varro as "Mountains Pirates", the Ligurians once inhabited a vast area between the Pyrenees and the Po Valley, and in the eyes of the Greeks they were the representative people of the Western hemisphere.
Having their territories resized due to the invasions of the Gauls, with whom sometimes merged, the Ligurians still managed to maintain their own specificity, and when the Roman legions had already broken the resistance of the Cisalpine Gauls in the Po Valley, they were still in the Apennines, Liguria and Piedmont indomitable Ligurian tribes who were strenuously opposed to the advance of Rome.
The relationship with Rome was on the other hand different from tribe to tribe, and if some Ligurian realities gave the Romans a hard time, both independently and as mercenaries of their enemies, others provided auxiliaries to the legions already in the first half of the second century BC, and if the Apuani Ligurians were subdued and subjected to deportation, the Ligurian Kingdom of Cottius remained partially independent and ally of the Roman Empire until 63 AD
