This is the second test run of the newly released EastWest Hollywood Orchestra Opus Edition, this time testing it on the score from the epic climax of the movie, "Raiders of the Lost Ark." I tried out a different method/workflow this time, and I continued to learn a ton of things from this project!
Instruments Used:
-EastWest Hollywood Orchestra Opus Edition: Diamond (www.soundsonlin...)
-Spitfire LABS (for Dulcimer and Autoharp)
-Spitfire Bernard Herrmann Composer Toolkit (for string slides)
-stock Logic Steinway Piano
-stock Logic Choir
Software:
-Logic Pro X
-mastered using iZotope Ozone 9 plugins

I own nothing.
Enjoy!

Things I learned on this go-around: -Using only keyswitch instances doesn't seem to affect the save times (as opposed to each articulation having its own track) -Although having some advantages, keyswitches have a few disadvantages that popped up in this case (for example, transitioning from a trill to a sustain patch on the same note proved difficult to make sound "not-janky") -For mixing in this test, I tried a different workflow of exporting each stem individually with each different mic position separated (so I'd have a Flute_CLOSE, Flute_MID, Flute_MAIN, Flute_SRND, and Flute_VNTG each as separate files). This worked really well in the mixing stage, although organizing everything in the Logic session was a bit time consuming -To organize all the stems, I put them in folders by instrument, I only realized that I probably should have made each of them "summing tracks," as Logic doesn't allow you to put effects and sends on folders, only the individual tracks. This would have made doing any correction EQ-ing and other mixing a huge pain, so I just skipped that for this mockup (and why you'll probably hear a lot of frequency buildup in this mockup). All in all, there's some things I thought that turned out really well in this experiment. But of course there's also things that I really don't like how they turned out (the trumpets in particular seem to stick out like a sore thumb, and not in a good way). What I'll try next time: -Perhaps next time I'll experiment with mixing keyswitch and individual instances (for example having shorts and longs on separate keyswitch instances), and also doing corrective EQ-ing and mixing inside the original Logic session (instead of waiting to do that until you mix the different mic positions in a different session). -I might try using the effects included in the OPUS engine itself (the EQ and other plugins) instead of the plugins on the Logic tracks. This might give me more control in the original Logic session (especially if shorts and longs are separated and are recombined in the stems)

Fantastic job! There's so much going on in this cue. Were you working off a score or picking it out by ear? I use a folder track stack for organization of sections too, but if I need to do per-section effects I usually send everything within the folder stack to the same bus where I can apply reverb or whatever else. That's about the only thing I thought might be missing in your mix was some reverb to help join everything together and give it that classing John Williams scoring stage sound. Maybe could have done a tiny bit of ramping of the tempo track to extend those long notes on the Ark motif a bit. Awesome work! EWHO Opus sounds great!

I hate KS. I never got why it is being so popular among sample libs. One articulation - one track, this is solution that will always work best for versatility. For shorts, velocity mapping is best.

Thank you for sharing. Enjoyed it very much. My dad owned a movie theatre when this film came out and I was 14. I sat in the theatre night after night listening to this score and studying every little element. I knew nothing about music at the time. Then I went to Daytona Beach and heard the London Symphony Orchestra live. (In those years, they spent a week every summer there.) One morning, as a nosy kid, I sauntered into the hall and listened to the rehearsal. Bill Conti was conducting a concert that evening of film music which had been performed in films by the LSO. Nobody cared that I was there. I went to the concert that evening and went backstage afterwards to meet some players. Maurice Murphy, the principle trumpet, remembered seeing me that morning. And so I went back the next morning, watched the rehearsal, and munched on donuts with the players during a break. Murphy, a very friendly fellow, approached me again and said hello. I told him how I had grown up listening to his orchestra in my dad's movie theatre ever since Star Wars, and he told me about how Star Wars was his first gig with the LSO and how it wasn't exactly an easy score. ("A baptism of fire" he called it.) He said he had great fun with RAIDERS, however, characterizing it as his favorite with Mr. Williams to date. That pleased me. He asked if I played an instrument. I told him I did not. He said, "Well, it's never too late." That summer, I bought a used trumpet from my friend for $35 (he was first chair and bought a better one), took lessons, and soon joined the marching band. One day I handed out an arrangment for the band I had done of the RAIDERS MARCH. It was an awful mess and was never performed. (Years later, I came across it and noticed that it didn't work because I was unaware at that time of a little thing called transposition. The instruments were essentially playing different keys! Otherwise, most of it was fine.) Anyway, I eventually became first chair, studied music in college, and became a professional musician. Fifteen years after hearing Maurice Murphy play the Indy theme on his trumpet, I would find myself doing the same at an orchestra pops concert. It's a great piece of music, but particularly special to some of us.

*"IT'S BEAUTIFUL!"* (head explodes from godly mic setup) Seriously, though, that hallverb effect on the low registers is awesome. I think the trumpet issues are probably more EWHO's sample limitations than anything on your end; in any case the stab/slap-stick parts sound great and for me that's exactly where they needed to shine. You did my terrified childhood justice, lol.

As a musician, this both amazes and terrifies me. On the one hand, it is astounding how far synthesized instruments have come. With a few exceptions, it sounds just about as good as when the London Symphony Orchestra played it in the original soundtrack. That being said, I’m terrified because I hope that synthesizers never get as good as acoustic instruments. I don’t want my career/quality of life being put in jeopardy due to film soundtracks or whatever using only synthesized orchestras to save money.
@LawrenceDunn101

unfortunately this has already happened. the vast majority of television scores are now recorded using only sampled instruments, and many films use them to augment live performers. it's rare now to find a film that only uses live instruments. zimmer and his studio have been doing this for twenty years or more, it's essentially the basis of his success and the success of all those composers who have come through his studio. if you listen to the gladiator soundtrack you can hear how it's constructed from the media ventures private sample library they recorded in the late nineties. (incidentally on that film they plagiarised holst and got sued by the holst estate.)

It’s a toss up but I’m not convinced they will. Hans Zimmer does use a lot of MIDI samples but he is a huge supporter of keeping orchestras around. He has said so many times. As for tv shows and smaller films, MIDI is a great way to get a huge orchestral sound with a small budget. That’s why, I believe, they use these samples more. But as far as live musicians go, they can’t be replaced. Even the best MIDI mock-ups I’ve ever heard were lacking the heart behind it. Am I being naive? I hope not. But I think live orchestras will stick around in film for a long time.
@josephreitzcomposer6855
@josephreitzcomposer6855 2 жыл бұрын
@@LawrenceDunn101 Zimmer has advocated for keeping orchestras alive and well in film. But I believe there had to have been a reason. Usually the reason behind exclusively using MIDI for major films is budget or time. The third reason behind enhancement but that’s underneath a live recording. Tv shows use MIDI a lot because of budget as well.
@LawrenceDunn101
@LawrenceDunn101 2 жыл бұрын
@@josephreitzcomposer6855 worth emphasising that music budgets for studio-level productions stretched to large ensembles well into the nineties. every episode of star trek was scored individually for orchestra. hell, the same was true of cartoons like animaniacs. likewise even mid-budget nineties video games could have orchestral soundtracks. today there are big-budget television productions that shun live performers in favour of sample libraries - an example is The Crown, who didn't even bother to employ a real orchestra for their title sequence music. the entire show is scored using libraries.
@josephreitzcomposer6855
@josephreitzcomposer6855 2 жыл бұрын
@@LawrenceDunn101 There’s always exceptions. It depends where the producers want the money to go. I’m aware of all of these. The Crown has perplexed me. Cartoons are cheaper for other aspects of the production because they don’t have to deal with sets, costume, etc. I was just saying a big reason is budget and where production companies want to allot their money. I’m just trying to make a point that Zimmer and other composers aren’t trying to phase out live instruments/ensembles.

Wow. EWHO could use this as a demo. For $20/month it seems lie a great deal. I just hope my Mac M1 2020 vintage will handle it . . .David: curious what hardware you're running and if you have the instruments on a standalone drive or if you downloaded them to your internal. You did a fabulous job of emulating the original, right down to the tempo changes. Also curious where you sourced the MIDI (please don't tell me you hand-scored this monstrosity . . .we're not worthy!)

For this project (and currently) I'm running a 2019 Intel i9 Macbook Pro...that I stuffed with 64 GB of RAM (yeah that's probably a little excessive, but I figure it's fairly future-proof that way). But for the libraries, they are mostly stored on two external SSDs (a few of the smaller instruments I've got on internal). And as for the MIDI, I played everything in myself (which I've done a reduction of here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hdCTdZiAr6qzfps.html). It was quite time-consuming, but very worth it!

This is wonderful! Excellent work. I know this was meant to show off a particular library, and that you’re dissatisfied with how the trumpets came out. Have you ever used any of the SWAM Brass libraries? They’re infinitely playable (they’ll even do shakes if you play a shake, and they *don’t* mangle!), incredibly expressive (best used with a breath controller), and they come with all the mutes you’ll ever need.

@@josephreitzcomposer6855 Yeah, I run on a Mac Mini so I usually use Sibelius and Note Performer to write out my pieces then use Logic to input my piece via MIDI Keyboard using Symphonic Orchestra if I want it to sound better. Even then, I'm not the best with Symphonic Orchestra so it doesn't sound as good as it could, so I usually just let Note Performer be the final product.
@josephreitzcomposer6855
@josephreitzcomposer6855 2 жыл бұрын
@@JordanWeberMusic I’ve never heard of note performer. It looks interesting. How would you say it compares to realism compared to East West and Spitfire? Cause you can make those sound very natural as well. I write in Sibelius as well. I like to look at the music. And then I transfer the MIDI into my DAW and add the appropriate library. Also, may I ask, do you know if there is a way to pencil in key switches without piano? Right now I have separate tracks for each articulation and that’s one big reason my computer gets bogged down. I got rid of my keyboard because I usually just use Sibelius anyway but now I’m regretting that decision.
@JordanWeberMusic
@JordanWeberMusic 2 жыл бұрын
@@josephreitzcomposer6855 Note Performer sounds fairly realistic. Granted, I don't mess around with velocity values inside of Sibelius. As far as key switches, I do it by keyboard, but I think there is a way to program (I'm using program loosely) key switches into Logic so you can select them in a drop-down and apply them to a MIDI selection. The proper term for this process is slipping my mind. Set driven keys is what's coming to mind but that's for animation programs. I'll look it up and comment back here.
@JordanWeberMusic
@JordanWeberMusic 2 жыл бұрын
It's called an Articulation Set. Basically, you tell Logic what notes trigger the key switches and instead of you hand placing the note, Logic knows that if you select that articulation, it needs to apply that key switch note. I just don't use Symphonic Orchestra enough to set up the articulation set, but I'm sure it would save me time if I did. Guess I'm just lazy in that regard haha
