Wow, one of the greatest breakdowns of so many complex historical and theological issues I've ever seen. Especially how he shows the fallacy of sola scriptura - amazing. As Mr Grodi put it, a large number of nails hit right on the head! I will be seeking out more from Mr Anders. Thank you God for the Catholic Church!

Dr. Anders' presentation of the "Reformers vs. Church Fathers" detective work and his thinking process as his discoveries emerged is without peer! I was absolutely riveted to his words. In fact, I liked some revelations so well in a few places that I even went so far as to backtrack several times! I just had to listen to his thought evolution in those sections out of pure wonder and joy, at the way he expressed it. This is truly outstanding!! God Bless!

In reality, scholarly disagreements over the canonicity (proper) of certain books (peacebyjesus.net/Ancients_on_Scripture.html#2) continued down through the centuries and right into Trent, until it provided the first "infallible," indisputable canon after the death of Luther. Thus Luther was no maverick but had substantial RC support for his non-binding canon. Furthermore, the (standard) RC objection against the Protestant lack of an assuredly true and reliable complete canon via an infallible magisterium would also apply to the majority of RC history, in addition to the time of Christ, despite the Lord and the apostles referencing so many OT writings as as being the word of God, as being Scripture, as having authority, which their opposition never contended against as being so.

He acts like Protestants doesn't see Luther and Calvin as flawed men God used. We agree the reformers (Protestants) made some of the same mistakes that the Catholics and Orthodox made which lead to the USA , the freedom of speech and religion. We can't help but to be influenced by the culture we live in. As CS Lewis noted with time we can more easily see how their environment influenced their decisions and beliefs and which ones held true with time. This is why CS Lewis encourage reading books written outside our own time and culture and not just the ones from modern scholars.

Thanks God for youtube! What a great forum for christians to share their beliefs and learn from each other. The current state of christianity is in disarray. There are now over 33,000 protestant denominations, and many of them are attacking each other to gain members and the financial support that they bring with them. Many point to the "reformation" in the 16th century, but there have been thousands of reformations as protestants broke away from Lutheran Church, Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, 7 Day Adventists, Assembly to God, etc etc etc. Each Protestant church professes to literally and properly interpret the bible, yet they don't agree on what the bible says....hence thousands of denominations and a different church on every block! It wasn't that long ago when all christian churches, regardless of denomination, taught that abortion, divorce, co-habitation, contraceptives, children out of wedlock, gay marriage, etc etc were unethical and immoral. Yet, it's very easy to find a protestant church that embraces this type of behavior and says God doesn't really care. Just give me 10% of your wages to support my wife and children, and everything is going to be o.k.! I think a picture of Martin Luther is on the devils bedroom wall as he was his biggest conquest to divide the church and scatter the sheep.

Summary 2 St Augustine was a Catholic.. The earlier I went the less like Protestants they look...Jutification by faith alone was a 16th century fabrication by a Catholic monk who'd left the monastery. Calvin and Luther believe Christian life begins at baptism - no suggestion of 'born again' for those already baptised. Calvin strongly opposed people other than him interpreting the Bible. He did not agree that a layman should challenge his interpretation. Calvin and Lutherans very much opposed. Calvinists considered worse than the Catholics. Nature of the Church, Eucharist, authority - issues worth dying for. Adoration of Saints and veneration of relics was absolutely intrinsic to early church fathers. Pagans did not like. When I touch Christ in his members I am touching Christ. The church is the mystical body of Christ. Peter- hankerchiefs touched.

Dr Anders historiography betrays an evangelical familiarity with American Calvinism and thus more loosely with the Swiss Reformation, though hardly with the German Reformation, except through the lens of popular evangelical portrayals of Luther, but certainly not with firsthand confessional Lutheran sources. Granted, presenting on the fly is difficult, in this regard charity is due, yet he frequently slips up on fairly simple matters. For instance, Zwingli was a precursor to Calvin and could in no respect be referred to as a Calvinist, which is what Dr Anders calls him when he alludes to the conflict between the Wittenberg faction and the Swiss faction at Marburg in 1529. I caught several more of these very basic errors throughout the program.
@Henry._Jones2 жыл бұрын

@po18guy Who wrote which history? Historical actuality (geschichtlichen Wirklichkeit) is always far removed from any later discursive attempt at documenting that history; my point was that he treats the data as though it were a monolithic reform movement, when in reality his interview betrays a more one-dimensional familiarity with the Swiss Reformation filtered through the lens of American low-church evangelicalism. No one in the West understands the Orthodox well enough to "bang on them." Most people's experience of Protestantism is very much like this man's; you have to be in the academy to have had a different experience and at that point all apologetic tropes fail because everybody is familiar enough with the material to make the necessary qualifications that are seldom made by the polemically minded salespersons of various theological positions. The typical either/or characterisations fall apart in discussing East-West, participatory versus juridical language and the like because a survey of the data shows that the historical actuality is not nearly so simple. There are always exceptions to the rule.
@rtgray75 жыл бұрын
There is a false dichotomy here. This man's experience before he converted to Catholicism was that of a man-made sect of Christianity - Calvinist or Reformed. The form of Christianity known by the "early church" is neither modern day Catholic nor Reformed-Protestant. Both the Catholics and the Reformed claimed Augustine because his beliefs and teachings on many things were fluid. He didn't even confirm libertarian freewill in his later writings. He mixed Greek philosophy with Christianity. The early church fathers writings do not line with Augustine or Calvin and Luther. There has always been a remnant that doesn't promote works and exalt the church as authority over believers nor does it believe in a man-made, Gnostic, deterministic God. I'm not Catholic but I'm also not part of a group protesting Catholicism. The apple didn't fall far from the tree I'm afraid. I'm not reformed. I'm reborn.

😞 so sad .....really lost world you have without being born again... John 3:1-12 Chapter 3 The New Birth There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

The Bible does not say that the Word of God means "the Bible, but not any oral traditions, nor any divinely ordained authorities". You show your own ignorance, sir. The Prophets were authorities. Moses was not a book, but he spoke the Word of God. The Apostles did, as well. That's how the Bible itself frames it. The problem is: since the Apostles had divine authority from Jesus Himself to lead the Church, anyone who adds to (or takes away) is adding to or taking away from God's word. Protestant

What is God's manifest most reliable permanent means of preserving what He told man as well as what man does: oral transmission or writing? What became the established supreme authoritative source for testing Truth claims: oral transmission or "it is written/Scripture?" Which came first: the written word of God and an authoritative body of it, or the NT church? Did the establishment of a body of wholly inspired authoritative writings await the church and require an infallible magisterium? Which transcendent sure source was so abundantly invoked by the Lord Jesus and NT church in substantiating her claims to the nation that was the historical instruments and stewards of express Divine revelation: oral transmission or writing? Was the veracity of Scripture subject to testing by the oral words of men or vice versa? Do Catholic popes and councils speak or write as wholly inspired of God in giving His word like as men such as apostles did, and also provide new public revelation thereby? In the light of the above, do you deny that only Scripture is the supreme, wholly inspired-of-God substantive and authoritative word of God, and sure record of what the NT church believed? Do you think sola scripture must mean that only the Bible is to be used in understanding what God says? Do you think the sufficiency aspect of sola scripture must mean that the Bible formally provides everything needed for salvation and growth in grace, including reason, writing, ability to discern, teachers, synods, etc. or that this sufficiency refers to Scripture as regards sources of express Divine revelation, and which materially provides for such things as were listed above? What wholly inspired oral source has spoken to man the public word of God outside Scripture since the last book was penned? Where in Scripture is a magisterium of men promised ensured perpetual infallibility of office whenever it defines as a body a matter of faith or morals for the whole church? Does being the historical instruments, discerners and stewards of express Divine revelation mean that such possess that magisterial infallibility? What is the basis for your assurance that your church is the one true apostolic church? The weight of evidence for it or because the church who declared she it cannot err in such a matter?

34:56. The Scripture tells us Scripture alone is sufficient. "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." 2 Timothy 3:15-17

John Caldwell i didn't see him saying that reformers didn't believe in regeneration. The Church has always believed it. I think he meant more of the "personal conversion experience" phenomenon that's popular in modern Protestantism. His point being that baptism is the actual born again event. Even though one doesn't feel emotional.

At minute mark 35-36 he says the Catholics don't appeal to transition....but that is not the case. Times have probably changed since this video was shot (in the 90's I think... based on the quality & 4x5 ration). Yes maybe it was likely the Protestants/reformed were arguing out of tradition & the Catholics using rhetoric out of the Scripture. But in the late 90's & 2000's I was raised differently - I was raised Non-Denomination, & later Protestant. Also 1/2 my family is Catholic - my mother & her Parents. I grew up going to Mass occasionally & learning about Catholic worldviews. Being raised like this I grew up on Sola Scriptura - Dr. Anders' arguments are form his experience & many Reformed Believers/Protestants are living out of defending the faith by scripture (1 Peter 3:15). Sadly his arguments are leaning towards the logical fallacy of anecdotal evidence.
@peacebyjesus23887 жыл бұрын
Amazing how the mind of men looks so much to uninspired men as determinitive of Truth. Anders looks to the so-called "church fathers" as determining what the NT believed (though that does not seem as important to him as the post-apostolic church), and he looked to real or perceived contradictions of Protestant "fathers" as validating what post-apostolic taught. Which means that somehow the the NT church was that of the post-apostolic church with its distinctives, yet which manifestly did not teach perpetual ensured magisterial infallibility, which is unseen and unnecessary in the life of the church, nor did it have a separate class of believers distinctively called "saints" or distinctively titled "priests," offering up "real" flesh and blood as a sacrifice for sin, which is to be literally consumed in order to obtain spiritual life. Nor is it otherwise Scripturally manifest in the life of the church as being the sacrament around which all else revolves, and the "source and summit of the Christian faith," "in which our redemption is accomplished." Nor is the NT church manifest as looking to Peter as the first of a line of exalted infallible popes reigning over the church from Rome (which even Catholic scholarship provides testimony against), and praying to created beings in Heaven, much less before graven images, and being formally justified by ones own sanctification/holiness, and thus enduring postmortem purifying torments in order to become good enough to enter Heaven, and saying rote prayers to obtain early release from it, and requiring clerical celibacy as the norm, among other things. Nevertheless, since "The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit" (Psalms 34:18) then the body of Christ, the one true church which alone always only consists 100% of believers, continued, though the visible manifestation of their faith was/is corrupted to varying degrees.

He starts off by saying that as a Presbyterian he believed a person was born again when they "ask Jesus to come and live in their heart". Not sure if that kind of thing is taught in Presbyterian doctrine (I'm neither Catholic nor Protestant), but no wonder he was so easily fooled by the glamour and religiosity of Rome, the Mother of Harlots. With such a poor understanding of the Bible, one can easily be led astray by every wind of doctrine. Another observation: I've noticed a common thing with Catholic apologists is that they can often recite historical data, selecting only those things that support their claims, making up the rest, and leaving out vitally important details. Details such as the genocidal persecution Rome has conducted against Christians throughout her 1600-1700 year history. Literally millions of Christians tortured, murdered, burned alive etc. because they wouldn't worship the Mother of Harlots. Another important detail, especially when a Catholic is attempting to use (laughably) the Bible to justify their wicked doctrines, is the fact that Rome has tried desperately throughout her history to keep the Bible out of the hands of ordinary people, even going so far as to attempt to assassinate the entire British government to prevent the King James Bible from being completed. Rome is truly drunken with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.

You are clueless. And yes, you are a protestant. What you typed is 1000% fiction. I wouldn't even know where to begin. Millions of Christians tortured and murdered? Nice try. You know nothing of the Church and nothing of history. Like the MAJORITY of your protestant (most likely baptist or seventh day adventist) ilk. You're not fooling anyone with a brain. Unfortunately you fool millions with your hysterical fictional narratives, those stupid enough to believe utter HOGWASH and unlikely to do any research or study or learn actual facts. Bearing false witness is a grave sin which you will answer for. The ignorant and hateful believe liars like you because they want a scapegoat which prevents them from acknowledging their own sins. The good news is that intelligent protestants are doing their own research, learning the TRUTH, and getting away from your heretical sects. The intelligent protestants like Anders here become Catholics while the ignorant swim in stupidity and hysteria and lies, like you are doing. And if you had any understanding of the BIble, which you clearly don't, you would realize it was a CATHOLIC book compiled by the Catholic Church in 397 AD. Before that there was only the CHURCH. The CATHOLIC CHURCH established by Jesus Christ.

Prancer1231 Your visceral reaction to a little truth is indicative of the extent to which you have been brainwashed and defrauded by your religion. Reminds me of John 3:19-20: And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. Unfortunately for you and your religion, the catholic persecution of Christianity over the centuries is well documented. The Bible is a catholic book inspired by the catholic cherch? The catholic cherch wasn't invented until 3-400 years after it was completed (although the pagan religions, from which catholicism was derived, go back much further). If the catholic cherch had had its way, they Bible wouldn't exist today. Jesus Christ, along with the Father and Holy Spirit, are nowhere near your abomination of a cherch. In fact, Jesus Christ, upon His return, is going to destroy your religion (read Revelation 17). These are undoubtedly some hard truths for you to swallow; all I can recommend is that you fervently pray to God for guidance and actually read the Bible without filtering it through your preconceived religious ideas. You will be amazed at just how thoroughly the Bible condemns just about every doctrine of the catholic religion.

Your hatred of the Catholic Church prevents you from learning any TRUE history or anything FACTUAL about the Catholic faith. Sorry, YOU are brainwashed. If you had a love of truth, you would learn real history and the truth about the Catholic Church. Your hysterical fictitious narratives are not the truth, sorry. I cannot debate someone whose arguments are based on fiction, bigotry, and paranoia. Enjoy your anticatholic fantasy world. You have no knowledge of history and are just parroting stupid anticatholic nonsense that ignorant protestants parrot because they are too lazy to study. For starters, you might want to look into protestant atrocities against Catholics. That's right, you wouldn't, because in your fantasy world everyone is sinless except Catholics. Remove the beam from your own eye.

Foxe's Book of Martyrs is a Protestant Reformation propaganda manifest. It was written in Queen Elizabeth's I time after Roman Catholic Queen Mary I of England was demonized, calumized and executed by her political and anti-Catholic enemies. The history contained therein is a highly biased "revisionist history" if it is not an outright fiction. The proponents of Protestantism had to create a myth ever since King Henry VIII broke from Rome to claim by a a naked abuse of kingly authority that he was the new head of the Anglican Catholic branch of the Catholic Church. King Henry was a staunch Catholic up to the point it got in his personal way and when he realized he did not have the political clout of an emperor. This book was an attempt to assert a historical justification to establish the Church of England as a continuation of the true Christian church rather than the modern innovation that it really was and is. If anyone knows the true history they know just how ironic and outrageous these lies are. Catholics were in fact the ones brutalized during this period by the Protestants in England - monasteries burned to the ground, churches looted and vandalized. precious art and artifacts stolen and sold, lands confiscated and given to nobles for political favor. Catholics were forced to attend Church of England/Protestant services or pay fines or face imprisonment and confiscation of property. Priests and monks and religious who refused to obey the kings secular appointed bishops faced hideous tortures and executions (lift-hung to near strangulation, drawn on carts around town while barely alive to be mocked publicly then publicly disemboweled with entrails burned on a spit, castrated and quartered to have body parts displayed in hanging cages etc.). It was a brutal time to be Catholic and most went underground and others pretended to comply by going to Protestant services then to private masses from smuggled in continental European priests. The Protestants lacking any legacy or self identity outside of the Catholic Church had to reinvent a new history to make it look like they were the original Christian Church and that "true Christians" had been persecuted and held down secretly by the evil Romansh loyal Catholics ever since Constantine. It's all utter nonsence and demagoguery. To be called a "Papist" was to demonize English Catholics as not loyal to their king but to a foreign ruler. This was an attempt to incite the populate to not tolerate Catholics and to turn in any who refused to comply with the King's new religion. English Catholics in particular were very loyal to the king except for his usurping the church and over a few centuries of persecution most caved into the absurdity started by King Henry VIII. It of course all unravels now even to this day as Anglicans mass convert back to Catholicism in response to the latent ultra-liberalism now emergent showing its head. An interesting point. If not for the Catholic Countries defending all of Christendom from the Muslims during these periods (including what becomes/was the Protestants states - who lifted not a single sword to help) there would be no "west" today. If we count the number of deaths caused by Protestantism (The peasant revolution/slaughter, French Revolution, the bloody 30 years war, Napoleonic wars, etc. and all the after effects we have even today) there are no doubt many many 10's of millions of deaths that can legitimately counted as a direct consequence of Protestantism. So its ironic that this book still has any ear at all in this "enlightened age" ( ). Yet this book it is the genesis of much of the polemics we suffer even to this modern day from the historical ignorance being passed around as truth in some of the more "redneck"/lowbrow Protestant churches. See it for what it is -- classic propaganda, revisionist history and demagoguery that was used to create a false dichotomy. Now in modern times some are resurrecting it and trying to plagiarize the lies so they can resell a new variant-Christianity to the impressionable. It's all snake oil and the people who push it have no pedigree nor a shred of linkage to the early church and the legacy of the apostolic Catholic Church. They are in fact impostors that the apostles warned would come in latter days. -- by Bona Fides at Catholic Answers
