@@needfoolthings Mate that's the entirety of British football discourse below James or Tifo. A team could score 100 goals a season, not win the league and the modal advice would be "get a tall tap in striker even if you score less, generic platitudes about passion and don't bottle"

I loved listening to this! I think Hazard is a good example but another example where that tactics has happened is Jack Grealish. There are interviews of him talking about the system he must follow under Pep compared to the free role he took under Dean Smith at Villa, especially in the Championship. Grealish is still a great player but his game has completely changed.

One of the players who really thinks for themselves and it's clear as day is Cole Palmer grew up in the Man City academy for sure. Had the best coaching could have easily turned into a player who just listened to what the coaches say, but instead when you see him at Chelsea's all over the pitch look at his heat map. He's wherever the ball is is where he is cuz he knows if he has the ball he can create for this team. And I think that's exactly what we're talking about here. He's the perfect example

I think what a lot of Footballers and Pundits, don't see, or understand. Is that the vast majority of Football "Fans" don't go to watch football. They go to experience it. They go to scream, to chant and to shout. They go to have societal and communal interaction. To be part of a Tribe. To feel a part of something. They go to escape the economic system they are trapped in. They go to vent anger, and frustration. To give manifest to anxiety in their lives. The most visceral reactions are for goals (scoring, we are better than you), hurling abuse and (less and less these days) acts of violence, of physical dominance over your opponents over the other Tribe, i.e. the crunching tackle. We all know this deep down. It's the adrenaline rush, the dopamine dump that we go for, we go for the drug, not the football.

I think a lot of the interesting points Harry made fall along the lines of prioritising individualism, but I align more with Nedum's way of explaining how teaching people how to be part of a collective in a professional team being a key factor to excelling as a footballer.

I work in IT and some of the stuff you were talking to applies to us as well. It’s deep knowledge of the subject vs associative knowledge. Some people just learn doing X fixes Y and when faced with an unfamiliar problem they just start spamming all the Xs they’ve picked up haha. If you actually understand the subject and WHY X fixes Y you can use that knowledge to come up with Z, which might fix a new problem.

Thank you triple-fold for this. Pundits, media and fans are constantly making observations from bygone 442 eras. Football has changed so much. One of the clearest which still hasn’t been understood is the “9” is no longer the 9 from 90’s and 00’s. No matter how much people are watching the game it seems their beliefs and understanding aren’t evolving.

@@arsenalogist4285 it has though. Extremely insightful discussion! Just wanted to make two requests. It would be amazing to have a more philosophical discussion on how specifically positional play has, in my opinion, killed off the old school no.10s and dribblers and how that is detrimental to the game (viewers and players). This relates to developing players like Taraabt who don't really fit into the positional play paradigm we see everywhere now. This is in the context of the current debate between two paradigms of positionism and relationism which has sprung up recently. Additionally, it would be absolutely brilliant to have David Brooks elaborate on his experiences in working with the kids in Palmeiras academy.

That would be a miniscule change because TV doesn't understand their pundits' job to be within the confines of the entertainment which is the match. Their intent, and yes, I use the term deliberately, is to ADD to the entertainment because they think they add to their audience that way. That's what makes all pundits EXECUTE their bosses' INTENT the way they can, changing their nature in places. Fancy dresses and hair for the gurls, childish behavior for the token king's fool, and all that. Do you still think you would want to watch Nedum in that environment, changing what he does best according to the yaysayers around him?

I think when players take less risks, their opponents do not develop ways to overcome technical players...and a vicious cycle ensues hence the boring lack of "ballers" we saw 15, 20 years ago and before. As much as the tikka takka style of play is successful it's monotonous with ultra control type of management of games.
