Ex-scientologist Chris Shelton and I discuss the 5 scariest and most destructive cults in the world on Halloween. His experience in scientology gives him experience in diagnosing cults, sects and coercive control. After my videos on Tom Cruise, Danny Masterson and scientology, I thought Halloween would be a great time to investigate such cults as scientologists, Children of God, NXIVM, Synanon and many more.

Chris always comes across so well. I like him and I can only imagine how much work he's had to do to get over not just the trauma but feelings of guilt or shame about what the cult demanded of him. His expression after he said that's what I used to do -- when they spoke about ex-members being hassled 5 years later. You could see the contortion in his face. Like you say, heart breaking.

Special thanks to Chris (and Andrew for hosting this), this is how lectures in universities need to be. Just have Chris go there and explain things to psychology students like this, I guarantee nobody will ever want to come late to a lecture (or flunk out on one). Very informative and most importantly - he gives off a positive vibe even when he talks about some really dark things. That's a pleasure to listen to.

Literally, had the sweetest teacher/professor. It was an rather unimportant course (not obligatory to do it) and you were free not to go. To the last session everyone showed up unlike in the other more important courses where people weren't being present anymore. And afterwards so many people were sad it was the last lession, because we were all kinda looking forward to it the whole week.

How to Spot a Cult - Markers: A Cult will say -- (1) You have a personal problem. (2) The problem is serious and usually existential in nature. (3) The "Group" has the total solution to that problem. (4) There is extreme urgency to resolve that problem. (5) Failure to act now assures terrible personal, adverse consequences. -- Whether religious or secular, just fill in the specifics for each marker. A Cult will have all these markers.

Isaac Bonewits created a Cult Danger Evaluation Frame in 2001 to rate groups within the Pagan community. It's based on the 1-10 scale with 1 being the lowest and 10 the highest. It rates Internal Control, External Control, Wisdom/Knowledge Claimed, Wisdom/Knowledge Credited, Dropout Control, Dogma, Recruiting, Front Groups, Wealth, Sexual Manipulation, Sexual Favoritism, Censorship, Violence, Isolation, Paranoia, Grimness, Surrender of Will, Hypocrisy, and Political Power.

@@cheriremily9360 Thank you. New resource for me. BTW - The Evaluation List misses two critical Evaluation Points: (1) Degree of isolation from, departure from or lack of acknowledged connection to the historical record of successful human potential methodologies. (2) Degree to which practices are placed outside the accepted sciences of physics, sociology and psychology. -- Scientology breaks the scale on both these. One can see that their methods are repurposed from multiple traditions. The degree to which history, science and logic are ignored or outright avoided by Scientology is massive.

If anyone is interested in the Moonies, there's a wonderful film called "Ticket to Heaven", starring Nick Mancuso, which tells a fictional story about a guy who falls into the Moonies. It lays everything out - how they gaslight and brainwash people, how they work them half to death, and how dangerous and difficult it is to get someone out. I HIGHLY recommend this film for how informative and well produced it is. (It was preceded by a documentary film called "Moonchild", which runs along similar lines, but I haven't seen that around since I first saw it in the early 80's. Tried to find it but haven't been able to track it down.)

Liz Taylor talked him into totally leaving it. He gave his life to Christ before he was killed according to people close to him. Lisa Marie was a Scientologist, but MJ studied everything and l doubt seriously if he was going to let this cult take his money. Lisa tried hard to manipulate him, but he did not like being told what to do. I did a lot of research on MJ. The Powers that be tried to slowly destroy him with the allegations in 93. They were destroying his image. When he broke the Contract in early 2000s and was exposing the industry, the 2005 allegations appeared. He was framed and the trial broke his heart. They killed him for his catalogue and owned half of Sony Publishing. He had really bad plastic surgery and vitiligo. He was a genius. Very sensitive, giving to a fault and very humble. There was no evidence at all that he was a pedo. No way. Pedos abuse usually hundreds of children and can't stop. So, this guy brushed off MJ. He needs to do his research.

Back in the 1980s I lived in NYC a few blocks from the New Yorker Hotel--the base of the Moonies. I had never heard of them. I met one of their reps in my local laundromat and he was charming/calculating. We had a few coffee dates before he started telling me about his "philosophy". I went to their cafe in the hotel just to listen. I immediately saw it was nuts. I was a lapsed Catholic and saw right through them. He was an NBC exec, which still freaks me out.

I am fascinated by Lev Tahor!!! Andrew: I am part of a well-connected circle that watches American Black cult activity here online. Black cults are nearly entirely excluded from the common discourse on cults. I know several survivors of “Dr. York’s” cult. He has the most prominent & massive pedophilia conviction by the US Federal government. I have approached many platforms about interviewing them & they are roundly ignored. It’s exceptionally upsetting to not see this aspect of our (US) culture ignored. Just this year two leaders were arrested & are awaiting trial in Georgia & Florida.

NXIVM was an LGAT, (Large Group Awareness Training seminars). They lure people in by calling themselves "self-empowerment" workshops, and ask for people to state their goals for participation. The goals of the participants are quickly replaced by the agenda of the group. There are dozens of such organizations, and most are breakaways and spin-offs from Scientology. They include est, (which is now Landmark), PSI, Lifespring, Choices, and too many others to name. If you don't remember est, (from the 70's), it would be worth looking up. They became famous for their extreme, abusive authoritarianism, and for not allowing participants to leave to visit the restroom for hours on end.

The best Manson book is, imo, The Family by Ed Sanders. It was written at the time it happened and the author went into it to write some articles about hippies getting a bad rap but changed his mind upon spending time with the Mansonites. That one and Tom O'Niell's CHAOS which finally addresses intelligence involvement. The most famous book, Helter Skelter, is by the prosecutor who had conflicts of interests and shady dealings throughout the trial, and he left out key evidence while up-playing less important things. "Helter Skelter" is because Manson loved the Beatles music and felt that he was being directly spoken to through The White Album.

@helen pigott I truly like your question. Twice in my life, I found myself in cult situations. Both involved a high population of people that were at different stages of involvement (recruits, novices, sworn-ins, devotees etc). By high population, I mean about 100 that were physically present and I met in person but at least another 100 people that were in the periphery. But what they both had in common was a founding couple and a distinctly small and restricted inner circle of about 5 people for the cult to be established in the first place. So my rough guesstimate is seven.

Moonies accosted me in parking lots. My BF in childhood got roped into Scientology and became Sea Org and had to hide when she left. She also had me go to a talk but fortunately I went with friends and we laughed so hard they kicked us out. Thank God. You did "miss" that many of Manson's family were actually disenfranchised rich girls,, people at the edge of music and Hollywood (Beach Boys are the connector to Manson through some members). The LoBianco murder was random but a big piece.

Dear Andrew. L. Ron Hubbard claimed to be "best friends" with Aleister Crowley. Crowley was a black magician who founded the occult religions of Thelema and the Ordo Templi Orientis. He called himself, "The Great Beast - 666." One ritual involved young boys. He taught "sex Magick," [sic] and believed one would receive great power by raping little boys, and having perverted sex rituals with adults. He wrote in his The Book of the Law, *"The best sacrificial victim is a young, male child of high intelligence and perfect innocence. Human sacrifice, although more dangerous, is most efficacious. For nearly all magickal [sic] workings, human sacrifice is best."* I wasn't sure if your research uncovered this. *Thanks for another great upload. Shalom.* ❤

Now, I'm going to ask you to site your sources. You've got me curious. Crowley was a sick SOB and a drug addict, but I've never heard of him having a connection to L. Ron at all.

@@cheriremily9360 I think it's wonderful you're asking questions. In fact, it's *always best* to do your own research! The statement of him being "best friends" with Crowley came out of Hubbard's own mouth. There's Y/T videos of him saying it. If I have time before bed tonight and work tomorrow A.M., I'll come back here and post a link. Take care, hun☺

Love listening to Chris Shelton.! So Informative, I love everything he has to say! He mentioned Tony Robbins, doesn't like him, neither did I. Does everyone know the name Dawn Watson except me? Couldn't find her here. She was in the audience at a Tony Robbins event 2016, Via the Netflix special: I Am Not Your Guru.. Absolutely gut wrenching listening/watching her tell how she was raised in The Children of God cult . She has her own podcast. Evidently Tony is the Real deal, and that surprised the heck out of me. Keep up the good work Andrew!☺️

Re: Manson, I would amend the analysis to point out that he reportedly reached a high level of Scientology training in prison. He was also a pimp between incarcerations, skills he learned from pimps in prison. He love bombed and beat the women, like pimps do. So, he had pimp skills and Scientology mumbo jumbo.

Thank u both for teaching us all about reasonable thinking and reasonable acceptable differences and even logical differences between people and the differences with healthy approaches towards this and on the contrary abuse and cohersive control and what it does. Dialogues like this and testimonies of abuse should never stop, so we all can protect ourselves from falling for the wrong things, specially at difficult times of our lives.

When I was young my grandparents when on a free trip to Korea sponsored by the Moonies. They were not interested in the cult at all, they were already in their own. They just had to tour some churches and listen to some lectures, said they were nice enough, kind of strange.

All of us have so many restrictions on our lives, and some are good (like prison) 😄 ...but we already have so many rules that, as an irreligious person, I just can't comprehend why people would want more rules and more restrictions that seem to be the only thing these cults can offer. I also noticed that a lot of these cults use women for their own selfish purposes. Mormons do it and before it was illegal, the men would even marry several women. Does anyone remember Roch Thériault from Canada? He cut one of his wives arms off and killed another. There's a film about it called _Savage Messiah_ with Polly Walker. Just crazy! I was so shocked to see that. He finally died in prison. But the things he did to his wives and children are unspeakable and yet he got away with it for years. I could listen to this guy forever.

I was looking to see if someone was going to mention the Ant Hill kids/Roc Thériault. Aum Shunrikyo (Japan) was intense and deadly as they launched the serin gas attacks on the Tokyo subway in...2007? I can't remember the dates but the early '00s.
