Even if not the most consistent by modern standards, Ronaldinho is for me the definitive face of the sport. His spirit was not just that of an athlete, but that of a player. He wasn't trying to be a performance machine like C. Ronaldo or achieve the insane optimization of Messi, but he was a positive caricature of playfulness, skill, ingenuity and plain love for his craft. The guy would outshine anyone when on the field. Much like watching a match of Nadal or witnessing Usain Bolt run, when Ronaldinho was in, you were there to watch a Ronaldinho match, not any match of football.

i really love ronaldinho but saying " He could carry the entire team on his shoulders" is not the way to describe him, he never carried any of his teams, sure he had many magical moments and in his prime probably the best dribbler ever in the sport but to say he could carry his team on his shoulders is not true there are many players that carried their teams way way more the ronaldinho.R9(before injury) for example would carry 10x harder than him and was way more consistent... ronaldinho was just pure joy to watch he had magic in his feet he has some of the craziest highlights ever but that doesn't mean he was carrying his team there are atleast 10 players that would fit that description way better than him

I think the reason why so many Brazilian players end up partying a lot and losing form is the reality that they came from. The Brazilian players you cited came from impoverished families, so they did not have much growing up. So when they got to Europe and became wealthy, they wanted to enjoy what they did not have in the past. They became fascinated by all the things that they now had access to.

I was one of those little kids who grew up seeing Ronaldinho playing for Barcelona and Brasil. Even though his prime didn't last long, his career between 2004 and 2007 was something magical so difficult to see ever again: no matter which team you supported, everyone watched him just to see which trick he was going to play next. He made a whole generation fall in love with football. It was a shame he didn't play the world cup in 2010.

@@yelyharmony2047 '' Stats are the ones that tell the true''. Well no. Senna is considered to be the best F1 driver in history but Hamilton has better statistics than him. Statistics did not say which cars they have driven and under which rules they have raced. You can apply this concept to soccer as well. More If a player score 3 goals in 3 matches with identical final score 1-0 for all matches is by far more dominant that another one that score 3 goals in one match lost 3-5 and with clean sheet in the other 2. The statistics for both player will be 1 goal per match. Coming to Ronaldinho, in his peak 2004-2007 was by far better than Neymar.

Before even watching past the first 30 seconds of the video, Ronaldinho's greatness cannot be boiled down to statistics. What he gave us is an adoration for the game - seeing a man enjoying what he does so much, and doing it with such incredible style, it made you want to stay glued at the screen. I still remember how every time the ball got to him, and he would start dribbling, my dad would always say "watch Ronaldinho's magics". His attitude is what makes him stand out even today.

You can't measure Ronaldinho's success by the number of goals scored. He wasn't a goal scoring machine like Romario and Ronaldo, he's the rare jack of all trades that instead of being good at everything excells at nothing, he excelled at everything. He was a complete package, but most of all, he was a performer. The moment he set foot on the pitch, you were about to witness one spectacular show. Watching him play was like magic, always with a lot of enthusiasm and a big smile on his face, he would dance around, toy with, and embarass some of the best players in the world like they were amateurs, there's a reason here im Brazil we call him Bruxo(Witcher/Wizard) because at the of the match, he had you caught under his spell. No one has ever played Football like Ronaldinho, came before or came after, he's made of sheer talent and passion for Football, the guy who turned a sport into art. My childhood hero right here, this guy made my fall in love with the beautiful game. I remember when my dad bought me the first football jersey, it was an Hernan Crespo Chelsea jersey and I became a Chelsea supporter. I remember watching Chelsea vs Barcelona in the CL with my dad and Ronaldinho embarrassed the Chelsea defense on multiple occasions. I knew about Ronaldinho and what he was about, but I started following him religiously after that game just so I don’t miss any of the “‘Dinho show”. This guy had kids skipping school so they could practice the latest trick he pulled off in a game. After that my dad bought me a Ronaldinho Barcelona shirt and wore it to school every other day. No footballer ever captivated the youth like Ronaldinho and I grew up in Eastern Europe where I’m not sure everyone could watch Ronaldinho at home on a regular basis, yet everyone wanted to be like him and like him. Played with a smile which made millions smile, gotta love Dinho ❤️.

We used to fight over who would be Ronaldinho when we played as kids and I used to obsessively watch his skill videos and tried them out myself. He's the most naturally talented player ever, of all the players he had the highest high, nobody ever touched a ball with so much ease. This is a guy who used to control a ball coming from a goal kick with his back! Have you played football? Do you know how hard it is to do that? This is a guy that, by the time he was 18, had already played football for 15 years, 6 days a week, from morning until you couldn't see the ball anymore at night. On his day, a pure freak of nature, ridiculously good. Could do the most incredible things with the ball and was perhaps the most entertaining player ever to grace a football pitch. Sadly, his prime only lasted for 2-3 years, largely due to the typical Brazilian problems(no offense to Brazilians). Still, it was a huge joy and privilege to have witnessed such pure talent and charisma that Ronaldinho had.

As a brazilian I couldn't agree more with you. Most youth players in Brazil think they're just like Ronaldinho when they get promoted, leading them to a lack of discipline and focus with training. That tipicaly leads those players to have issues with partying and stuff like that, we have multiple cases here in our own national league.

^This is what ppl dont get. Messi does the same dribble over and over cus he's small and agile so he doesn't even need to do tricks, and basically, Ronaldo transformed into more of a goal machine than anything else over the years. Ronaldinho however was actually magical and creative beyond belief with a football like an artist on the pitch. His skills were miles beyond that of any other player I've seen (don't even mention Neymar cus he aint at that level) and probably the only player I'd sit and watch highlight clips of for hours on end. I don't do that for messi, maradona, pele, cr7 or even r9.

Ronaldinho was so good that you could be a Real Madrid fan and losing 0 - 3, but you couldn't hate him. You could simply watch his greatness and be in awe. And love the guy, even when he destroys your team, cause he was not simply playing to win, he was playing to express himself and make football a transcendental experience for everyone playing and watching. It was like Jesus himself was playing footbal and with every touch he was singing "Rejoyce, for I am here to brighten your days and deliver you".

Raymar Football this is true. Ronaldinho was not known for his long prime in football. He was known primarily for two reasons: that beautiful stunning joga bonito style of football that was amazing to watch, and his contribution to fc Barcelona that showed everyone that Barcelona was a team to be feared. Barcelona prior to the arrival of ronaldinho had spurts of greatness but was always very on and off. With ronaldinho they won the league I think twice, and the 2006 champions league and of course the 2002 World Cup with Brazil. But once again, that 06 final didn’t really showcase ronaldinhos dominance. That game easily could have been Arsenal’s victory had it not been for a red card. Eto was the monster behind that final. Ronaldinho unfortunately loved partying, had won it all, and didn’t really have the drive to continue being a top class player. Genius alone does not cut it at the top. Only a few years at the top but those few years put his name everyone, inspired a young generation to follow his style, and overall, really helped put Barca on the map.

@@gymfamily In my opinion he in his prime was a better footballer than cr7 and messi. But that's just me.And ofcourse Zidane too was better in his prime than cr7 and messi.Fyi i dont consider goals assists and trophies as the standard to measure a great player. But yeah all those stuff is important and a plus point but more important for me is the signature style of play of an individual player and the class and elegance and just how easily and naturally they grab and hold onto others attention and just show their class elegantly and discreetly without arrogance or showing off.And even when showing off doesn't look like they are trying to show off just looks classy and natural.

Saadhna Kamal thanks for your opinion. I would disagree but we all have our own opinions and I respect that. I would say in prime Messi and cr7 were better but ronaldinho has this magic and class that made every fan giggle like children in disbelief. When you say soccer magic, people think of ronaldinho. He had this presence where it was just amazing to watch him and he played a beautiful game that inspired everyone. Ronaldinhos peak was so short, but what he brought to this beautiful game is what’s not forgotten and thus gives him legendary status. The man was always smiling
