@Leo - TheKing Calling someone a keyboard coward while you are doing the same. Where was Messi in 2010 WC? He can't perform for Argentina when they have players like Aguero and Dybala. Messi is the best right now but he is not the greatest of all time. Even Maradona was better than him. And Zidane too. France lost 2002 WC without Zidane and reached final twice with Zidane. And in 2006, he was against a Brazil team who had Ronaldo Ronaldinho and a few others and Zidane completely out played them.

zidane could do anything when it mattered his dribbling and and finishing were legendary, like messi, his passing was legendary, like xavi and iniesta , his skills were legendary, like c. ronaldo, his set pieces were legendary (like current messi or young c.ronaldo who was good at free-kicks and pens) he was one player that did the job of 4 other players just not quite as well and on top of that he was decisive when it was most imortant (can't compare).

Zidane was always an asshole as a person and he left Juve mainly cause he was pissed that Juve fans loved Del Piero more than him... also, about his headbutts and his "hot head", I've seen him in many in-game brawls in games... he was the guy that always tried to sneak a hit behind the ref's back at the end of the fight... great player, one of the best ever but him being a completely shitty person prevents him from liking him at all...

It's easy to quantify goals as the only thing that matters. Or even a goal and the odd through ball, slick dribbles past players. However if you closely watch the match against brazil inparticular, he ABSOLUTELY dominated a whole team on his own, from start to finish. He created space, he beat players, he ALWAYS retained possession and created space for team mates. He assisted too. Be honest with oneself, you have NEVER seen a performance like that ever. Especially not against THAT calibur of opponents.

Stats do not count for a player with goals only, everyone scores goals, even from penalties, I will not forget these words uttered by Ronaldo Phenomenon, The real Ronaldo once said it. Zidane is the best soccer player with whom I played side by side, ignoring big players, even from his country Brazil. He adds in his words. I do not say this sympathetically. Because I know Zidane as a player, I have never seen a player with that vision on the field like Zizou. 🐐 Lionel Messi about Zidane when we played the El Clásico game for the first time in 2004-2005 season. I remember that after the match I went to Zidane and humbly asked him to change the shirt with him. Zidane was the only player who asked him for changing the shirt. *Zidane is considered by many, as Greatest player of all time..* there is reasons why: *1.* He won World Cup in 1998 *2.* Singlehandedly, dragged France to their second World Cup final in 2006 *3.* Singlehandedly Won Euro in 2000 *4.* Scored Greatest goal of all Time. (and where.. in 2002 CL final) *5.* He has own skill, named Zidane's Roullete (spin move) *6.* Was MVP in every his tournament and championship *bonus:* *1.* He scored 3 goals (!) in 2 World Cup finals (!). *2.* Zidane's transfer record stood for 8 (!) years. (2001-2009). *in 2001 €75 million* (!). *3.* In 2004 Zidane was named by UEFA as the best European footballer of all time and at this time, already was GOAT in football history. *and this all before his last famous 2006 World Cup.* *For example:* this all is for what *overhyped by social media,* just one of the greatest forwards of all time like legendary Gerd Muller and without doubt best players of their generation Messi and Cristiano can only dream.

1. He won the WC in '98, but that France team was by no means a one-man team. It was supremely talented in(almost) every position, and had one of the greatest defences of all-time. 2. "Single-handedly" is over-doing it. But he was good in that tournament no doubt. 3. Not really. Again, like in WC '98, that French team was fucking fearsome - in fact it was a better team than the '98 one because young French attackers had come through over the preceding two years and their forward line improved. 4. Definitely not the greatest goal of all-time. Great goal, but there have been many, many better. 5. That move existed _long_ before Zidane came along. I saw Michael Laudrup doing it years before anyone knew who Zidane was. It might be named after him, but not because he invented it. 6. This is impressive, I admit. He just stood out on the pitch - your eyes were drawn to him every time he got the ball. bonus: 1. That's impressive. But remember that Geoff Hurst scored 3 goals in a _single_ WC final. And Geoff Hurst wasn't even a particularly good player, never mind a great player. 2. This is a pretty meaningless statistic. Bernabe Ferreyra was the world's most expensive player for seventeen years in the thirties and forties and no-one's ever heard of him. 3. In 2004, he was named best _European_ footballer of all time... But since 2004 Cristiano Ronaldo has come along and shattered almost every record there is. Add to that all the non-European players who most neutrals would say were/are greater than Zidane: Messi, Maradona, Ronaldo-Nazario, perhaps even Pele. I liked Zidane as a player - he was a genius, one of the greats. But he wasn't the greatest player of all-time, not in my opinion.

H8sam88 you hit this perfect I have been saying Zidane was to good but no one takes notice till you fact check it. He won the World Cup and euro, but for its when he signed for Real Madrid and his first season scored the winning goal which is the best in history because it’s in the final and Zidane was the highest transfers player in that time. If anything stands out between him and Messi and Ronaldo was the World Cup 2006. Zidane came out of retirement for international football at the age 34 for that 2006 World Cup and the teams and players he knocked out was unbelievable. Spain, Brazil and Portugal. look at those teams with the players Zidane beat with France they were players of previous World Cup winners, champions league winners and ban dor winners. Even Messi and Ronaldos history in world cups don’t even compare to that.

ZIZOU WAS UNBELIEVABLE (SMART+VISION "NO PLAYER HAD"+LEADERSHIP)

He might not have scored loads of goals and made loads of assists but the way he controlled game at the highest level was something else. Also his goals and assists were beautiful whenever he made a goal contribution it was effective and amazing to watch. He would score important goals and make important assists in big siginificant games whether it was the champions league final the World Cup or the euros. He would always perform when it mattered. Also that performance against Brazil in the 06 World Cup was probably the best performance I’ve ever seen from a midfielder. Just majestic

The dude was ambidextrous plus an awesome header, set piece master, dribbled elegantly like a restless teenager even at an old age, could shoot and pass from very uncomfortable positions and had a very high accuracy, was very hard to knock down and didn’t need to outrun defenders with sprint speed, just break their pace. His least important but most impressive skill was receiving fast crosses and halting the ball for his trot. He only scored 156 goals, but he was mostly a CM and some times a CAM. Best player in any locker room he stepped in.

For me it was his vision that set him apart from others, he rarely passed directly to a player but into the space and gaps between defenders which just split defenses wider and wider apart. France played my home nation in a friendly in 2002 and it was the first time I watched a game just to admire the work of an opposing player. It was the best defeat of my life.

What Zlatan said is the explanation. I never could put words on it myself, but every time i saw Zidane play, it was like watching magic, what he did simply wasn't suppose to be possible, and it wasn't until Messi came along that we saw another player handle the ball the way Zidane could. I have had discussions with so many people about Zidane over the years, and it seems like those that are under 30 has a hard time acknowledging Zidane's magic, to them it's all about Ronaldo (the new one, they barely know who the first one is) and Messi. But i get it after Zlatan's quote. It is basically the same with keepers, where i think Oliver Kahn is the greatest of all time, but no one under 30 seem to understand why he was so great, and the reasons are very similar to that of Zidane. What Zidane did, which is hard to explain and see in short video clips is his mantra on the field. He elevated all his teammates up a notch, combined with the fact that Zidane had such ball control that he could literally chose the pace and direction of the game. The reason he earned the nickname maestro, is because of his ability to take charge, and simply orchestrate the game as he saw fit. And when you think about that, that he could actually do that, very very very few players in the history of football has possessed that ability. It's actually unheard of, here we have players making millions of dollars, and there are 11 of them on them on the opposing team, which all want to win, they all want to control the game, but they are denied because of one mans absolute share power to direct the game he sees fit. And i was telling everyone that i thought Zidane was the greatest ever, until Messi came along and, which in my mind, is better, but those two are alone on top in my opinion. Zidane had the X-Factor, you had to experience it, be there and witness it, year by year. Those who did knows what I'm talking about. It is only when you see the whole picture that you really understand what a dominant force this man was. Kahn is also like this, yes he has some truly amazing saves, some totally ridiculous. But Kahn had something else up his sleeve, he had the ability to strike fear into the attackers, making them afraid of scoring. Some players just has this one special hidden skill, that is almost like a godsend or a hack of you will. It elevates them to another level, and become legends.

But Messi never elevated Argentina over the line like Zidane did with France at Euros and World Cup. Don't forget he came back out of retirement and carried France to the world cup final in 2006,was the best player of the tournament. If he didn't get sent off he might have won another world cup after 98. He's above Messi in football along with his managerial success.

I remember when he was first getting mentioned as a decent player around Euro 96. Ay the time didn't understand why. By the time France won the WC in 98 he played well but people still thought it might have been a fluke France won playing at home. But from there he and France proved themselves and he gradually just got better and better as he aged.

I was born in 1991, I absolutely loved watching Brazil play. When Brazil lost to France in the World Cup of ‘98 it made me mad at Zidane. But by the time I understood the game and saw his years in Madrid he made me more mad when he announced he was going to retire at the 2006 World Cup. Making everything look so effortless and easy was the method he conducted himself in every game. Best way I can describe him to people who didn’t get a chance to see him play? Christiano Ronaldo could sidestep and chop with the ball. Messi could dribble around the ball. Zidane could waltz around with the ball, that was the difference.

Since i started watching football, the French team won everything so i became their fans. I never felt the French team were very sportsman like, but loved that they dug really really deep. And what more can you say about Zidane you summed it up pretty well. In 2006 after the 2002 and the 2004 debacles i had 0 hope on France doing anything significant, at best they were just going to make it out of the group. But then they beat Spain and then against Brazil who were like a well oiled machine they completely stunned them and Zidane was the center of it all and even in the Semi Finals...Even in the final France dominated the 2nd half they were creating a lot of chances...and if it were not for Buffons presence of mind and premonition that Zizou header would have gone in..i still think if Zidane did not loose his head France would have won without even needing the penalties.....Yes he may not have the goal count, but I feel he is better than Ronaldo or Messi in getting/creating goals at the clutch moments..for me he is a GOAT...
